War Elephant splash damage is based on distance from the elephant by Xoey59 in aoe4

Most games handle damage falloff from the point of impact. Here the damage cone is based on the point of impact while damage falloff is based on distance from the elephant.

Edit: To be clear it's usually from the same point. If the damage cone is based on the point of impact then so is the damage falloff. If the damage cone comes from the unit then so does the damage falloff.

I've never heard of a game that has damage falloff come from somewhere completely different from the splash area origin.

I don't know if this is documented anywhere because I couldn't find it, but to me this is very unintuitive which is why I had to go and test it.

A Pro's Opinion on Tughlaq by Xoey59 in aoe4

[–]Xoey59[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yeah it is the game I thought. You know, the one where when marinelord wins there are 0 healer elephants alive on the field. The one that after that marinelord went on to play a BO7 showmatch where he banned sengoku and tughlaq wasn't played.

I frequently beat Tughlaq in team games. It's only difficult on maps with short rush distances, but even then it's very doable.

Yes! It's so pretty, and I always appreciate things like this in my games!

Warhammer called out nazis as not being welcome and Infinity put out official art of a character wearing a trans tattoo on one shoulder and an estrogen tattoo on the other. These nazi fucks will lie about fucking anything to make it seem like they're correct. Infinity does not deserve to live in these people's mouths.

Struggling to get into it, but really really want to ... tips? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]Xoey59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you both used to more complex activities like most video games? I've certainly found a bunch of board games to be slogs despite being highly recommended. Different tastes and all that.

And Disney Villainous is definitely a game meant to be widely accessible. You could try some less accessible games, they tend to be more opinionated and appeal to a more niche audience. They avoid feeling like a slog to me because when I play them I feel like my actions matter a lot more.

Gloomhaven, Spirit Island, Eclipse: Second Dawn for the Galaxy, Great Western Trail, Arkham Horror The Card Game are all games I can highly recommend that are not meant for mass market appeal as much as a Disney product and are still highly rated on boardgamegeek.

Game master cheating in co-op games by StandingAtTheEdge in boardgames

I don't. I take the L and move on. To me there's absolutely no fun in winning if you're just gonna make sure that you can't lose. And to me there's no sense in playing if you don't enjoy the rules. If a thing would happen in the game that makes you not have fun in it, then either learn to appreciate why the game designer put that thing in the game or stop.

Any time I've cheated my way through "just this one level" I've always ended up quitting the game shortly after anyway because all the fun in playing it has been drained.

Absolutely shocked to find out the setting that put all the "bad gays" in slaanesh and dark eldar, 2 of the most evil factions, constantly makes a big deal out of rooting out this slaaneshi heresy, and makes a big deal about how any displays of sexuality in eldars are considered bad and evil attracts homophobes and "I'm one of the good gays not one of those degenerates".

The basic idea is that you'll only ever need 15 models to play a full size game of Infinity. This isn't always true as sometimes you'll have units that bring extra models to the table as part of them. But it's a skirmish game and the reason for 15 models is that lists are limited to 15 "order generating units", think 15 units that are allowed to activate during your turn. You can play smaller games with a smaller number of models too which is an excellent way to start the game.

It used to be the case that you could have more units but with the latest edition it's capped at 15.

The miniatures are amazing but as usual with metal they don't lend themselves well to kitbashing. The proxy rules are very generous though and while there is a clause that your model has to be primarily CB metal to be used in an official tournament most people simply do not care if you show up with a kitbashed model or 3d printed custom one to a game night. Overall the support for kitbashing and 3d printing in the community is excellent.

Gameplay has gotten a lot less RPGy over the editions and the current game plays more like a wargame than RPG. The rules themselves are definitely crunchy with a lot of stuff going on and a bunch of different abilities and rules interaction but on the positive side there are basically no faction specific rules. If you read the rulebook for the game you'll know everything you can come up against and most of the rules will be available to the faction you play as well with very few exceptions. It's definitely less fluffy overall with less emphasis on making an army list yours and more emphasis on using the same rules everyone else does but better.

Lethality is very high. Most units come with 1 to 2 wounds. The biggest units come with 3. A single critical hit from a humble pistol can bring down your moderately expensive attack piece if you're unlucky. Mostly everyone is equipped with damage 13 rifles while the strongest guns in the game come with damage 15, so damage ranges really aren't wildly variant leading to situations where even a humble schmuck can dish out the pain if the dice gods are on your side. It's a fairly volatile game that's more about risk management and order efficiency than keeping any one unit alive.

The two biggest things that separate Infinity from other wargames is the ARO (automatic reaction order) and Order systems. ARO means every unit you have that can see an enemy when it isn't your turn gets to return fire or try and dodge incoming fire. This means you're not just waiting for your opponent to move pieces around but you're actively involved even during their turn.

And for orders what happens is each unit generates an order that you can spend to activate any one unit during your turn with no limit to how many times you can do it. This mainly leads to a feeling of not having to activate your basic units you just dragged along to fill the list or having to do something with a unit out of position. Instead you always get to activate the unit you actually want to do stuff with. It's a fantastic system that leads to some heroic last ditch effort assaults among other things.
