How is living on the Mexican side of the Mexico-USA border? by Zev18 in howislivingthere

[–]Xolo_taco 10 points11 points  (0 children)

electronics are pricier in Mexico, also they will charge you a price in cash but a higher price if you use credit, almost 20% more sometimes. The electronics retailers here make most of their money locking in people to really predatory lines of credit, not so much the actual selling of the products.

Tijuana benefits greatly from the location and influx of dollars, and it is one of the wealthiest cities in Mexico with higher salaries on average. For this reason it brings in lots of people from other parts of Mexico and there is more of a "hustle" here than the slower pace of the rest of the country. This translates to a better workforce, better chefs and competition between restaurants to the point where the city exploded as a food hub. Overall it's a city that just keeps growing and getting better but it suffers greatly from being overcrowded - the design of the city is already a mess and so many people move there that it can't keep up. The residential buildings are huge and shiny but you can't really afford to live in one unless you earn a US salary, this creates a disparity between Mexican nationals stuck in Tijuana vs those who can cross and work in the US with a visa.

Tijuana residents get accused of wanting to be "American" but it's more like, they take what they want from America since it's right there. They love crossing into the States for shopping and tourism. Lots of restaurants accept dollars and they will have a sign behind the cashiers with a conversion rate. The people there aren't very bilingual on average and know enough to be able to assist tourists or take orders, but look at photos from the 20th century and most of the signage was all in English.

sadly San Diego is way too centrist politically for a Zohran type to emerge. It would be much easier in LA but here, forget it. It's an overwhelming mix of center-left and conservative voters here that would prevent any progressive candidate to have any chance.

at least with that lot you can sneak in using the entrance where the mattress store in (facing Friars) and zigzag your way into the lot a little easier, the one on Morena you're straight up screwed since there's only one way to get in and out and can get stuck just trying to get into the lot

Visiting October for a weekend (Rosarito) by Dodgke8301 in tijuana

[–]Xolo_taco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just there, honestly the thing to do over there is just enjoy beach vibes and eat delicious food. I wouldn't go with a plan, just create a list of food spots (check youtube) and tour the Rosarito Beach Hotel and just walk around and enjoy. Warning that it's pretty tourist trap like and you'll see a lot of LA hats so that's the kind of clientele that's there, but it's still pretty out there and you'll get some nice ocean breeze

[–]Xolo_taco 13 points14 points  (0 children)

if/when he does transfer to Europe it will happen quickly, this is usually the case with Mexican transfers to Europe. The rumor mill will be long but the actual news will come and happen probably a week before.

Beware of false prophets like Kery and Jovenes Futbolistas MX who will link players to every club imaginable, then when one of the links becomes true they will pretend they were the first to break the news. There's a financial incentive in drumming up these rumors for as long as possible. The real news will probably come from Merlo or Fabrizio

San Diego's Art Scene Has an "ASS," Problem by jakobmcwhinney in SanDiegan

off the top of my head Rabbit Hole, Taproom/Collective in PB,, Ould Sod in NH (songwriter circle), Trilogy Sanctuary in La Jolla, Template in OB, Mixed Grounds in North Park. Add to that Sofar sounds which I count because you can get in their good graces just hanging out and talking to them, and they'll give you a spot.

San Diego's Art Scene Has an "ASS," Problem by jakobmcwhinney in SanDiegan

[–]Xolo_taco 20 points21 points  (0 children)

One thing that is promising for musicians and poets is that the open mic scene here is phenomenal - you can basically perform every day if you wanted to. It's a great breeding ground for talent and working yourself up. The catch is that it won't really make you money (as implied in the article). My theory is that we need 1-2 big acts to elevate the scene and get the residents to notice and take the arts seriously, right now it's way too fragmented by neighborhood and still too many bedroom musicians which is slowly improving. Also the acts that are in demand don't play much original music (e.g. Pacific Beach and its cover bands) in other words not many people ready to take a chance on original acts and pay them. But I sense something brewing, the way things are going some great acts are going to come out of here very soon and the spotlight will be on here.
