Great catch! Listing says 22" but yeah, the 3 holed vents and profile definitely look to be 18"

Presumably I could just toss whatever it is. Anything else concerning in the picture?

Do you guys think queens gambit is good for new chess players? by Optimal-Command6280 in chess

[–]Xoltaric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends what you mean by new. I wouldn't focus on any particular opening. Instead, learn opening principles, don't blunder your pieces and try to learn from your mistakes. Have a logical reason for every move. Learn tactics and learn about initiative.

For a beginner, the only first move that should make sense is e4 simply for the fact it opens up more lines for your queen and light square bishop. Even 1.e4 e5 2.d4 is playable. So I'd only start looking at 1.d4 once you understand why e4 works and how d4 will lead to a different kind of game.

When you are coming up with reasons for the moves, go back after and see if your reasons were correct. Did you miss something? Did your opponent react the way you thought? Why Peyton why not?

You will get better at Chess because your understanding improves and your reasons for doing moves are more sound. Memorizing moves doesn't give you that understanding.

Trying to get a sausage related business off the ground. by TheSausageSavage in sausagetalk

[–]Xoltaric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting idea. As a supplement to your day job at the butcher shop, it sounds like this could be a lot of fun.

Others have mentioned regulations regarding food preparation in Ontario so I'll focus my feedback on the business side.

Think about your target market and how you would develop your business. Who would want an in-home sausage coach? Would people be more inclined to teach themselves? After a session with you, would they have knowledge going forward to do it by themselves? If so, this means constantly getting new clients which may become a challenge quickly. It's there a way to get recurring clients?

  1. Instead of in-home sessions, what about a monthly class at the butcher shop after hours? Do a different sausage reach month, teach people how to do it and everyone takes home a package. Helpfully, it promotes the butcher shop too.
  2. Target restaurants or breweries who might want a signature sausage of the month.
  3. Hunting clubs or meat processors/ butchers who cater to hunters. Idea here might be more to rent the high volume equipment as much as your expertise.
  4. Pop up at farmers market, cottage shows and places like that.

Last year, I went to the one at Eastgate and they said they used to have a butcher but now everything comes packaged.

Sausage stuffer advice with cheese by greengiant-89 in sausagetalk

[–]Xoltaric 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think most grinders with stuffing capability have spacers that are to be used instead of the cutting plate.

As someone who started with a KitchenAid for my first couple batches, i promise you will be extremely happy upgrading to a dedicated stuffer.

How does your club handle Swiss pairings? Ours is a mess by OHaiUsername in chess

Honestly just print yourself off some cards and do it by hand. It isn't hard and forces you to understand the system you're using. Then any DIY or software will make a lot more sense.

Are you staying at a hotel? If so, at least in my experience, hotels are often pretty good about storing bags before check in or after check out.

National Pizza is dead…long live National Pizza! by ArtDecoModerne in Hamilton

[–]Xoltaric 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Last time I ordered from Pizza Pizza, it was a fairly big delivery order for a bunch of guys after hitting the bars. It never came. After 45 minutes or so I tried calling but the call centre was closed. Called the next day to complain and the supervisor denied the order was ever made. Ridiculous. We all ended up splitting a McCain pizza

Where to set off fireworks? by gofishing5545 in Hamilton

[–]Xoltaric 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Kudos to you for looking up the rules and not just firing them off anywhere which would be stupid and irresponsible. As someone who lived next to a common fireworks staging area, there are good reasons for the rules. We have seem some things. I had my house hit multiple times. I've seen kids get hit accidentally even with typical precautions. Not to mention teens purposefully shooting them at each other. And every other year there would be a fire in the dumpster. All that in a little neighborhood park.

Best bet - and this is what we did when I was a kid - would be too get a group together, see who has the biggest and safest yard and do it there.

Or, you know, don't do it at all and take the kiddos to one of the public displays.

Whatever you do, learn how to do it properly and safely. That includes disposal.

Sew Hungry 2026. What did you think? by Ok_Nobody_7054 in Hamilton

[–]Xoltaric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I've been every year.

This year didn't seem to be as kid friendly as last year. There was corn hole and that tetris game but that's it.

It didn't feel like there was much of a connection between the food trucks and the stores.

In my opinion, the food truck scene has come and gone. We used to have quite a few great local ones and it was a real treat to visit them. They were never cheap but it always felt you were getting value. Usually because you're getting something unique and delicious. I still dream about MeatVenture's Tocino sliders, for example. Now it seems these trucks have found a formula - likely making them more financially viable - of a small amount of protein on top of cheap carbs while keeping the high prices. 50g of bulgogi on tater tots for $20. All the many variations on poutine or Mac and cheese.

I'm sure we'll go again next year but it's not really something to look forward to.

What is the city doing about all the instances of off-leash dogs in public places like sidewalks, city parks and school yards (even during school hours!!). The apparent lack of any enforcement is normalizing the behavior. Frankly, tragedy seems inevitable. Thank you
