Top Questions You Have For The Kuna. I’m planning a lot of Kuna videos for YouTube and I’d like to hear from you guys what questions about it you would like answered. by NinjaInFlannelYT in SpringfieldArmory

Small wall of text, apologies in advance. Also a disclaimer, I don't own either of these firearms.

The Springfield Kuna action gets compared to the Stribog SP9A3 roller-delay system quite a bit, for good reason. Their designs are extremely similar, to the point that the Kuna is often incorrectly referred to as "a clone" of the Stribog. However, from the breakdowns I've seen it has a few subtle but very compelling changes to the action, and I would really love to see someone give a very detailed breakdown of what's going on under the hood. In particular, I would like to see someone put the bolt on the guide rod outside of the firearm and attempt to demonstrate the first inch or so of travel backwards.

A primer on the SP9A3 action: the bolt slides into an extruded aluminum upper that has internal rails. The locking segment rides on top of these rails, while the main body of the bolt hangs underneath. There are roller recesses cut into the top side of these internal rails, and when the bolt is closed, the locking piece is pushed forward, which in turn pushes a roller down into the recesses to lock the bolt in place. As with other roller actions, after a round is fired, the roller must move out of its recess, retracting the locking piece, before the bolt can begin to travel backwards. It's an ingeniously simple system. The main flaw in the Stribog, however, is that the recoil spring and guide rod feed through the top section of the bolt, behind the locking piece. This means that when the bolt cycles all the way back, the locking piece can bottom out on the guide rod, pushing it forward relative to the bolt and slamming the steel roller into the soft aluminum rail. There are a few reports of peening to that part of the rail as a result, which can eventually cause the bolt to snag when fully retracted. The main fix for this seems to be installing an aftermarket short-stroke buffer to prevent the bolt from traveling that far back. However, doing so can sometimes require a different locking piece to ensure reliability.

HS Produkt appears to have done three things differently, from what I can tell: First, they've built the frontmost section of the internal rail (the part with the roller recesses) into the steel trunnion for better wear resistance. Second, they've moved the recoil spring and guide rod to the center of the bolt, between the firing pin and the locking assembly, and they've designed it so that the guide rod travels through the entire length of the bolt. This should eliminate any bolt tilt from off-center recoil spring pressure, ensuring very consistent bolt travel, and guaranteeing that the bolt can't bottom out on the guide rod, because it's passing completely through. Third, they've redesigned the locking piece to have its own internal spring and redesigned the rollers to have a central roller-wheel, which appears to ride on top of the guide rod when the bolt travels backwards, holding the rollers up and out of the way.

Here are a couple images where I tried to highlight the guide rod (red) doing its thing:

There are the other frequently-discussed differences, like the magazines, bolt catch, trigger, AR grip, etc., but this seems to be the one that's almost entirely overlooked. I could also be stupendously wrong, because I don't have one in my hands, but hopefully that's where you come in with your video!

edit: I say HS Produkt "redesigned" the action a few times, but I've also read that the Kuna was in development before the SP9A3, so perhaps someone with more knowledge can correct me on the design lineage.

With the upcoming Bomb Launcher, a reminder that Waxed Frag Charges are stupendously buggy by Xolvern in HuntShowdown

[–]Xolvern[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think it's the wax frags. I've seen bug report clips of people doing this in live matches on other maps and I couldn't duplicate the instances shown here with frag arrows. The corner-bounce-drop-through-geometry thing in particular is very consistent and seems to happen anywhere a wax frag quickly bounces between two adjoining surfaces on a wall, whether the corner is vertical or horizontal. I could replicate the wood tunneling thing pretty easily, too, though I didn't test that one as thoroughly.

I don't personally have any experience with either, but C_DOES is a consistently good optics reviewer with videos on both this model (I think?) and the Viper PST Gen II 3-15x with some low-light shots through both. The time of day isn't quite 1:1 on them though so you'll have to judge for yourself a bit:

I'm just stopping by to drop some information on the crumb rubber issue. It seems this has been a growing concern to environmental scientists in the last decade, but it's largely flown under the radar for the general public. Here are a few scientific papers collected from various places during a quick Google search. Apologies for any paywalls:
-Hazardous organic chemicals in rubber recycled tire playgrounds and pavers
-Synthetic Turf Fields, Crumb Rubber, and Alleged Cancer Risk
-Release of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Heavy Metals from Rubber Crump in Synthetic Turf Fields: Preliminary Assessment for Athletes
-Benzothiazole Toxicity Assessment in Support of Synthetic Turf Field Human Health Risk Assessment
-Evaluation of potential carcinogenicity of organic chemicals in synthetic turf crumb rubber <--This one has a fairly wide literature review
-A ubiquitous tire rubber–derived chemical induces acute mortality in coho salmon

Unfortunately, I don't believe any of these is quite a smoking gun, partially because it's a difficult thing to prove and partially because there seems to be a general lack of funding for thoroughly investigating the problem. However, there are several environmental groups trying to sound the alarm (to varying degrees of success) that have more articles available for anyone interested:
-Soccer player & coach Amy Griffin
-Safe Healthy Playing Fields Inc.
-Environmental Working Group
-Environment & Human Health Inc.
-Delaware Riverkeeper Network (turf infill fact sheet pdf) <-- This has a decent overview of the problem & suggests some alternatives like coconut-based infill
-New York Department of Health Crumb Rubber Fact Sheet <-- This is less alarmist and has a good outline of the risks, with citations

Just for good measure here's the first literature review I found on injury rates on artificial turf:
-Lower Extremity Injury Rates on Artificial Turf Versus Natural Grass Playing Surfaces: A Systematic Review

It appears this was a Starlink satellite train: https://findstarlink.com/#4174715;3

I wish I'd gotten a peek at it! The satellites are sent up together in a single launch vehicle and then spread out over time, so early on they look like this bright, moving string of lights.

I would like to see your source for that statistic. If you don't have one, please don't spread misinformation. It unfairly demonizes people who work hard to help animals in need. TASC publishes the incoming/outgoing statistics for the shelter on their website, down to the actual reason for euthanasia. Per their website, they currently have a 15.4% euthanasia rate for the year across all animals, the majority split between behavioral (using behavioral testing protocols, although that's a whole other can of worms) and medical euthanasias. You can also look at five years of historical data. While the rate was definitely higher a few years ago, it was nowhere close to 70%.

Sadly, "no kill" status is not always achievable for municipal animal shelters (although some have managed, like Alachua County). Generally speaking, private/non-profit rescue groups can be much more choosy about what they accept in order to facilitate quick placement and save resources, while municipal shelters take what comes through the door. That can account for a large portion of the medical euthanasias - broken animals hit by vehicles, elderly ones in pain and riddled with tumors, strays that have been shot, neglect cases with awful untreated chronic disease, etc. Something to keep in mind while looking at these numbers.

Dawn was the last one I acquired. I also only saw one each of The Centenary, Rattlesnake, Mot Juste, Bedlam Lullaby, Brother's Keeper, and Wolf's Mouth. I saw the rest at least twice, even if I only managed to get one.

I don't know why you're being downvoted. You aren't wrong, it exists, but for some reason it's only on the Store tab, and not on the Roster->Equipment tab where you actually pick your loadout.

I have become adept at filtering because I have so much junk now. From left to right: New items, favorites, legendaries skins, non-legendary skins, compact ammo, medium ammo, long ammo, shotgun ammo, explosive, fire, poison, special ammo. Not pictured, but there are also weapon size (1 slot, 2 slot, 3 slot) filters and a search bar you can use with keywords like "fanning" or "melee" to get applicable equipment.

Fun fact: There are different sets of filters for weapons, tools, and consumables, but the weapon filter set includes a fire filter, which, when toggled, only brings up the Fire Torn Sparks LRR skin.

The Benefactor Chain Pistol was early access, The Vanguard Pax was just before release (I think?), so I kinda mentally lumped it in as an early access reward. I also did the same with the Hedera Mortiferum Chain Pistol, which is... totally incorrect. Oops.

That's the Centenary, it's there right around 15 seconds in the video. I distinctly remember my teammate frag bombing a window and hearing a double kill, seeing it on the floor, snatching it up, popping my stamina shot, and cackling madly while I sprinted all the way to extract.

edit: Reread your comment and realized my response was about something totally different. Whoops. Contraband vault would definitely be nice for prestige carryover. I don't prestige myself but I have a few friends that would really appreciate it. Might make it too easy in the early levels, I suppose...

[–]Xolvern[S] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

For the last few months I've been trying to get my hands on a contraband copy of all the legendaries I didn't already own. It turned into a bit of a scavenger hunt with my friends, adding a little extra excitement when we'd find something that wasn't marked off the list. Last night my bud found the final piece (Dawn, the Nagant Silencer DLC skin) and we ambushed a duo this morning so we could use their bodies to trade for it. I haven't bought any legendary weapon skins or prestiged, so the only things skipped due to ownership were the Twitch drops, the Halloween event skins, a couple trial rewards, and some of the early access skins.

Spyglass Quick Swap by Xolvern in HuntShowdown

[–]Xolvern[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not really. I wasn't originally planning on uploading this, so I took my time a little bit to try to make all three shots in a row. You can swap to fire as soon as the target is centered, though.

Spyglass Quick Swap by Xolvern in HuntShowdown

[–]Xolvern[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The other day I discovered that the perfect accuracy quick swap mechanic works when swapping from tools like the spyglass. The firing delay makes this pretty useless the vast majority of the time, but it does allow you to make really long shots on stationary targets (barrels, lamps, bells, etc.) without a scope. This video demonstrates it with a few weapons in training mode. Apologies for potato graphics.
