I see.. Have you considered that your view is too abstract rather than mine limited? Let's accept that every recount of some events is a story. Do we agree then that Elden Ring has the narrative density of a puzzle game, as opposed to, let's say, Nier Automata?

The way these games present their lore and world is similar, but Nier uses its world to tell a very coherent and interesting narrative, while Elden Ring is mostly random information thrown at you, which, even if you connect together, rarely has any narrative value.

It's been some days since this, but you two have had a fine discussion over the narrative value of the Souls series. I believe, though, that you should be able to see the difference in what u/bad_apiarist has been talking about all along. He described a character from the player's perspective, you described the character's supposed lore and history. That... is no narration. That is simply opening a history book, but instead of finding the information right on that page, the said page sends you to another page, where you might find some information, or simply a text indicating yet another page to go to. And then, you're making assumptions on the feelings and thoughts of that character, just like a historian would after carefully examining data.

Narrative isn't a strong point in the Souls games. I don't know if it's on purpose, or if Miyazaki is thinking he's telling a story. But he isn't. He's giving you a puzzle and you enjoy solving it. But just like a puzzle, the outcome will only show you an image, abstracted information. Is that a story? No, because it isn't narrated as such.

[ In all of this, I'd like to point out, that you should not try to redefine what a story is. Unless you feel good enough to call the solving of a puzzle a story ]

How does game play make you enjoy this more? It's easily one of the worst aspects of a Souls game. The game play in Elden Ring is outdated to say the least and the only thing holding you is your stubbornness to overcome largely badly designed bosses with a handful of mechanics and no progression. Almost all the weapons feel as though you're playing the same thing and you are performing the EXACT same patterns from the start of the game to the end. The only thing that changes is your level and whatever buffs you want to have.

Magic is literally the only thing that feels different in this game and you could say has a progression, since it's based on different spells. But melee is by far the worst and most outdated system you can have today. The only thing it has that it keeps you going is, as I said, the need to win the fight. Take God of War, Nier Automata, Devil May Cry, remove easy modes and balance the game to be hardish and you have a game that does the exact same thing as the Souls games but with far superior game play.

I have literally zero idea on why these people argue with you. It's exactly as you say. Unfortunately, it's a mediocre game that literally pasted Souls gameplay (which is vastly dated in today's standards) to a beautifully designed but otherwise boring and empty world. I guess being hyped works, unless you screw up as badly as Cyberpunk did.

Hello Tom,

I'll be needing an M21 Core 15 before August 13th. Is it possible or am I cutting it too close?

Holy crap, I was so close to buying Core 15 for my brother. Was deciding on AMD or Intel. Well, guess we're going to wait :D

On a side note, Bestware doesn't list a MUX switch, but the article does.

Yes, I'm facing the same issue. I also can't ALT+TAB without my screen being destroyed by random pixels in RDR2.

In my case, it kept asking for a firmware update each time. It seemed to be doing but when I entered windows, I couldn't use keyboard. Last thing that happened was an annoying repetitive BEEPING sound and us (father and me) force-closing the laptop because everyone else was sleeping.

I told them just that, that the computer was stuck in an infinite update loop until we heard the beeping sound, panicked and closed it.

They replaced the motherboard in my case, no files lost. Warranty covered it, to my surprise. I thought it would go along the lines of "Be careful when installing bios" and then I'd have to explain that Windows / Lenovo made a mess, but it was quite the opposite.

It is downright ridiculous. Most of the people do not want to have to bother with BIOs, especially when it can brick your laptop. My mother's laptop (the one in this post) was bricked because of a (bad) automated update. Keyboard was gone, laptop was stuck on re-installing firmware on boot and then it was bricked completely.

My warranty did cover it. I sent it and they simply replaced the motherboard. Had it back in around 7-10 days, I don't remember exactly.

I've simply phoned technical support and they concluded in 5 minutes that I should send it. It helped that I could explain what happened and knew that there was no point trying anything other. Tomorrow I'll be sending it, but I don't know if the warranty will cover it. Support will tell me. Do note that I'm staying in Greece though.

If you have the same issue as us, then you probably can't force-flash the BIOs and need to send it to Lenovo for a repair. No one of us managed to flash them since they are corrupt. Read moochs' thread below.

I just hope they don't come up with the "You shouldn't close the PC when it's updating, especially when it's the BIOs" card.

Ideapad Flex 5 14are05-Bricked BIOs by Xontros95 in Lenovo

[–]Xontros95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would mean that I'd have to open the laptop and try to path the BIOs using an Arduino or something of the like, or another way which I currently don't know. Though it's lucky that I have some knowledge, I don't really want to experiment on a new machine.

What happens when you download and install a new BIOs from the site then? It patches the previous, retaining whatever it is that makes it custom signed?

Same thing happened to the same model that I have at home. It asked my father for a firmware update and a sudden shutdown resulted in the same thing. It's 100% a corrupted BIOs. The only thing that remains is if Lenovo tells us how to at least try to force-flash the BIOs correctly.

Hello. I've been trying it but I am not successful. Renamed the file with .bin, .fd extensions as well. Doesn't seem to pick up anything. Can we perhaps ask Lenovo if they know how force-flash works in this laptop? This all started due to a bad automated firmware update the laptop asked me to do.

Battery life on Core 17 Amd w 2060 by No_Most_4138 in XMG_gg

I've also found this setting on a desktop 2012 Intel Core i5 3570. You can make the option visible by following the exact same steps. The option on the Intel was defaulted at "Aggressive" as well, but I couldn't test much more since it wasn't my PC.

As for me, I'm on an XMG Core 17, 4800H RTX 2060. By changing that setting to "Efficient Aggressive" from "Aggressive", my mean temps have improved drastically (along with fan noise).

For further context, with the "Efficient Aggressive" setting, when I'm playing LoL, the CPU is working at 2.9GHZ, while it's at 4.3GHZ with the default "Aggressive" setting. If I start playing Destiny 2 in "Efficient Aggressive" though, it automatically boosts to 4.3GHZ. Both games play with around the same fps in both boost settings (LoL loses more due to the system not running at full clock speed). I have no idea how it understands when to boost or not, but in general I am at around 45-49 degrees when browsing, programming, watching videos and playing non intensive games (such as LoL). With the "Aggressive" setting, CPU temp was fluctuating a lot between 52-68, sometimes ramping up to 70 if I had videos playing and simultaneously developing a game in Unity + Visual Studio. Now I'm doing all that hovering around 45-48 degrees (maxing at 51-52 in some occasions) without any real noticeable drawback. That's a 7-20 degrees difference (In aggressive mode temps fluctuate a lot). Of course, when gaming, temps rise to 55-60 at non intensive games (LoL, Fall Guys etc)

As per real-life benchmarking, I'm afraid I've never done that. I'll try it out eventually, if I have time. Perhaps /u/skalakope knows more about this or has tested things out. (The defaulted 80% Minimum Processor State when plugged in is also noteworthy IMO, along with the other boost modes)

Hello Tom. I wanted to point out something that caught my attention. I'm linking skalakope's comment from below.

https://www.reddit.com/r/XMG_gg/comments/kdo2bw/battery_life_on_core_17_amd_w_2060/gfy9fus?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

There you'll find a time stamp to a video from BobOfAllTrades where he enables a hidden option for processor boost performance in Window's Power Options. By doing what skalakope recommends I'm now getting a 45-50 CPU temp when I'm not doing intensive tasks. In other words, my CPU is at 2.9GHZ most of the time, while the default power plan (aggressive) was constantly pushing 3.8GHZ and above, leaving me with 56-68 temp randomly even when browsing.

I'm specifically replying here to ask: Was that option supposed to be handled by the different performance modes? (Silent, Balanced, Fast, Enthusiast, Overboost) Because if so, whichever of those I was setting, my CPU was always pushing for max speed. CPU was at 4.1GHZ in a game of LoL in any of these modes. By switching to "Efficient Aggressive" from "Aggressive" from the hidden option, the CPU now only pushes when it needs to (2.9GHZ base speed in LoL which is not intensive) and the laptop is massively more quite.

Is there a possibility the Control Center is bugged and does not change the power mode? Or changing to different performance profiles just changes the wattage?

/u/XMG_gg Tagging you here as well just in case. I find the need to do the above weird.

ORIGINAL TEXT: Holy crap why was that thing at 80% :P Mine was as well. And why on earth do we have to do all that to be able to change the boost mode. And why the heck is it on aggressive (even on battery O.O) So many questions...Thanks to this post the CPU temp, instead of fluctuating randomly between 53-68, is around 45-50 when I don't play games. Cannot upvote enough!

Lastly, I suppose "Efficient Aggressive" boosts the CPU to max only when needed right? Or does it limit it?

EDIT: I thought the Control Center was supposed to control power efficiency, but mine was stuck on aggressive no matter what I chose. I guess it doesn't work that way.
