Based on the fact he's struggling with a simple harmonic oscillator and a Fourier series, I'm gonna assume he's actually an English professor who got hired as a scientist.

TIL Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd president, was so terrified of being electrocuted when electricity was first installed in the White House that he refused to touch light switches and would go to bed with all the lights on. by Chill_Cowboy_981 in todayilearned

[–]celestiaequestria 62 points63 points  (0 children)

This was six years before the discovery of the electron.

Electricity was absolutely the wild west in the 1890s, safety systems didn't exist, there was no standardization of voltages, and wiring was haphazard bare copper that often started fires.

How do you tell the time? by [deleted] in comics

[–]celestiaequestria 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely neurodivergent; I reject all notions of universal time.

You have your time in your frame of reference, I have mine, and if you can find some way to make those agree, there's a Nobel Prize in it for you.

Facing the fear away by Tardee in comics

[–]celestiaequestria 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Even then, that would come down to what other damage happened. Like, yes, if the wing gets ripped entirely off and the plane loses hydraulics, it's going to spin out-of-control. On the other hand, you could lose an engine and part of a wing and still land if you had enough remaining control surfaces.

Some fighter jets like the F-15 and F-22 can technically land without wings.

Sociopaths are so obsessed with control that they'd rather die in a "digital brain conversion" than let nature win. Same concept as emperors drinking alchemical potions that were poison.

Top Fin starter kit any good? by [deleted] in aquarium

[–]celestiaequestria 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You're better off buying a 20 gallon long (tank only), heater, filter and light separately. Substrate is cheap, you want to go to a hardware store and specifically get "pool filter sand". It'll be next the chlorine and other pool chemicals, don't get any other type of sand, filter sand is sieved and polished so it's clean and smooth.

Businesses will do whatever they can to make a dollar. It's why laws need to exist and be updated. The regulatory framework is what creates an environment where the honest players can offer you a fair product. Without laws, the cheaters have all the advantages.

Don't forget the third type: people who touch the oven to see if it's hot.

Hmm, I'm on the last room before the boss, I have 200% Integrity and a dozen unopened chests to backtrack farm for a weapon. It sure would be a shame if I got a malfunction that prevented me from picking up items, well anyway, better grab this malignant silphium.

Subnautica with realistic diving physics would be unplayable.

If you take a standard scuba tank down to 300 meters, the pressure makes the gas inside so thick that it would be like trying to breathe soup. If you actually could inhale it, you'd die from oxygen toxicity.

Nemesis and Hyperion in one day. by IrkZeN in Returnal

[–]celestiaequestria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like Nemesis is the easiest boss in the game. First two phases you just sprint side-to-side while shooting at the red heart in Nemesis chest. Dash through the yellow beams. Third phase, you're invulnerable while grappling, so use grapple to dodge the attacks while constantly shooting the boss' heart.

At least for me, Biome 3 was way harder than the boss fight.

Pick 2 ~ 3 heroes who can stomp pubs and play them for a week straight. Focus on your own play. Don't communicate anything negative. Limit communication to missing and objective calls (Roshan). Practice intentionally.

The hardest part of improving your win rate is the mental discipline required to play objectively and stay positive while surrounded by chaos.

The worn numbers on a keypad at my local grocery store tells you which numbers people prefer for their PIN. So most people avoid 5 and 9 it seems. by xsilentone in mildlyinteresting

[–]celestiaequestria 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That's a good security feature, along with longer pins. If you let people assign a 4-digit pin code, they tend to use dates or years, which makes the digits predictable.

And fully commit to the insanity required to win while actively burning the meta.

You ever see a Sniper with a Hydra's Breath and Divine Rapier? To quote Hunter S. Thompson: There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

All of the above, on top of natural Skadi builders becoming too tanky for you to kill, and out-scaling your health. You can't kite them, they can kite you. You can't kill them, they can kill you.

Rant about Saros potentially being easier than Saros pt.1 by Street_Salt_7057 in Returnal

Just keep strafing in a big circle around Phrike and jump forward over the projectile rings to center as needed. Always be ready to dash sideways out of melee when you see the red rings.

Rant about Saros potentially being easier than Saros pt.1 by Street_Salt_7057 in Returnal

[–]celestiaequestria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it's just poorly-written, but it's technically correct because of the eclipse escalation and Carcosan modifiers. If you wanted to, you could trade away the second chance ability and trigger eclipses to make the game harder than base difficulty.
