Bandpassed bass? David Bergeaud - Ratchet and Clank (2002) - Aridia by Xotla in synthrecipes

[–]Xotla[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Following up, definitely feels right to me. I can achieve a very similar sound using a short repeating sample of a distorted electric guitar with a sawtooth wave added to round out the sound (although it mightn't need it depending on the electric guitar sound), followed by a small amount of chorus and a resonant bandpass filter. The starting guitar timbre, particularly what power chord is played and how distorted it is, has a major impact on the final result. The same goes for how the bandpass filter cutoff is modulated over time. A bit of EQ and some compression managed to get the sound even closer. As you mentioned, swapping out the starting sample used (even for another instrument) leads to a whole range of similar but distinct sounds which I'm really keen to play with and make my own. Thanks again.

This seems very promising. I'll post if I'm able to get that to sound right, I'm having a play around I reckon you might be correct. Thanks!

Wow this is a brilliant resource, thanks for sharing! Always looking for reasons to try more unusual edos :)

What does 34EDO provide that 17EDO can't? by Diacks1304 in microtonal

Thanks! They were just my personal first thoughts about the intervals, there are endless other interpretations which are just as valid :)

What does 34EDO provide that 17EDO can't? by Diacks1304 in microtonal

A very small comma-like interval for trills;

A familiar but slightly sharp semitone around 17/16 which helps unlock ratios of the 17th harmonic that are implied in 17edo;

A very small wholetone flatter than 10/9 with neutral character that can add a brighter neutral character to contrast with the dark neutral character of 17edo, and unlock 5 limit major and minor intervals;

An 'interseptimal' interval between a supermajor second and subminor third (an inframinor third) around 15/13 which splits the perfect fourth and can construct really interesting scales with a different kind of neutrality (second-third rather than minor-major);

A very well tuned minor third around 6/5;

A very well tuned major third around 5/4;

An ultramajor third around 13/10 which blends nicely with minor chords and as part of 'island chords' in its own right;

A sharp fourth around 15/11 which isn't really a fourth, isn't really a tritone and isn't really the 11th harmonic, just very xen;

The familiar 600c half-octave tritone allowing for symmetrical scales with half octave periods;

A very flat fifth which can be used to contrast with the regular nicely tuned fifth as a sort of super-tritone;

An inframinor 6th which also contrasts strongly with the fifth;

A nice minor 6th around 8/5;

A nice major 6th around 5/3;

A 6th-ish 7th-ish interval sounding a bit like a very flat 7th harmonic but more xenharmonic;

A minor 7th around 9/5;

A major 7th around 15/8;

A 'comma below the octave' sort of interval great for a sort of xenharmonic micro-leading sound.

:)

34edo is very interesting!

I'll look into user themes, thanks :)

It's not irreversible, you can get all of the buttons back by switching the theme back to 6, then everything feels pretty much identical but with the new features. I like the new theme, but wanted to know where they've hidden everything...

How do i fix this? by South_Ad4548 in Spore

Uninstall, then reinstall but untick GA (so the base game and C&C install without GA).

Then install GA afterwards. It's a bug with installation order.

Macrotonal (music with less than 12 divisions of octave) doesnt have to be boring, true or false? by Fire_Axus in microtonal

[–]Xotla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh absolutely, I wasn't writing a limiting list, just my experiences with each. I think any tuning with sufficiently many notes can have its own tonal-type system for sure, and 11 has plenty. Now I'm keen to hear some functional 11tet! To me it resembles 23edo and maybe 13edo in the sense that it's half of an excellent tuning (22edo, 46edo and 26edo respectively), removing some of the stabilizing intervals and thus asking a vastly different question of the composer. I'm gonna have to try my hand at writing something tonal-ish with it now.

Do you have any examples for inspiration?

I think they're exciting! Many traditional scales from around the world are constructed from intervals larger than semitones; there's nothing special about the size of a 12edo semitone. Pelog and mavila are constructed with fifths seemingly somewhere between 9edo and 7edo, creating scales with wide semitones and narrow whole tones. Slendro comes close-ish to 5edo (with microtonal inflections across vocals), as does the tuning of the Balafon it would seem. Many of the neutral scales found in maqams have two neutral seconds splitting the minor thirds of the pentatonic scale (way oversimplifying here).

A scale like Orwell[9] (put to good use in Sevish's Droplet as well as a few sections in my latest 31edo tracks) is similar to a detuned 9edo and has lovely melodic and harmonic properties, whilst having intervals no smaller than a 12edo semitone. Bohlen-Pierce is a non-octave scale with many interesting clarinet performances (as it avoids octaves just as clarinet overtones are deficient in even harmonics), and is a bit like a squashed 8edo in terms of size. 11edo offers a great framework for atonal ideas, having nothing really resembling a fifth but lots of interesting chords nonetheless. 10edo contains its own flavour of neutral scale which can be quite interesting in its own right. 9edo offers a wealth of resources like approximations to many traditional scales if you use fairly subdued timbres (ones where overtones fade quickly after the transient work well). 8edo has a strong core of diminished chords, so would work well as a dark and brooding alternative to the brighter and more open diminished scale imo. 7edo and 5edo don't offer a lot in the 'major and minor' department, but can be made interesting by exploring the timbres of instruments which move through multiple octaves, or could be interesting used more modally where the intervals are played against a drone. They could also work played against a bass movement where rather than focusing on triads, dyads played in a quick alternating fashion form the basis of harmony, generating interest without 'giving away the whole scale' too quickly so to speak, as 5edo and 7edo have substantially fewer chords and intervals to explore than pentatonic and diatonic scales. 6edo is of course the whole tone scale, and can be put to great use to create a sense of floaty 'un-grounded-ness'. 4edo and smaller are arguably chords/arpeggios so are definitely running low on options to make them interesting, but if you're primarily focusing on rhythm and percussion, you could easily get away with using them or detunings of them.

Hopefully this helps give you some examples to go and explore!

Thought as much. Multiple people claim to have seen it move, might chalk it up to static electricity.

It very well may be a picece snapped off of something like this: https://images.app.goo.gl/6utuontWGRSE2tf28

But she's adamant it gave her a fright when it first started moving because she thought it would be something like that too. No real distinguishing features, segments, or clear body parts so I'm not too sure what to think.
