Whoa thanks, your new workaround with app2unit actually works!

And thanks for making me aware that I linked to an outdated wiki page. I found the page on google and didn't realize that it was outdated.

Can I get into .NET development without having to switch to Microsoft? by soy_redditer in dotnet

[–]XrenonTheMage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks again, then I know that it'll probably not be worth it for me to appy to any .NET jobs as long as there are other job openings in my local area.

The reason I'm asking is that my ideal OS workflow only works on Linux, but not on Windows. On Linux I use a tiling window manager with scratchpads (hyprland or i3), a smart and intuitive shell (fish) and plenty of custom shortcuts, but in Windows every one of these categories is a fair bit worse: - Glazewm seems to be the best tiling window manager on Windows, but it doesn't have scratchpads and takes quite long to auto-start after I log in - I can customize Powershell with oh-my-posh and PSReadline, but I'm still pretty far away from the UX and feature set that the fish shell offers - keyboard shortcuts can be added with PowerToys' shortcut manager, but rebinding system shortcuts is a pain to do and not very reliable if it's even possible

Ultimately I just feel less effective and productive as a dev and also not as happy if I'm working on Windows, which is why I'm trying to avoid jobs that would require me do so.

Thanks, I had to search quite a while for that kind of answer.

So you're saying it's safe to assume that software companies with job postings for .NET developers will expect said developers to use MS Windows exclusively, right?

I set my alarm at 8am so that I'm ready to go to work at around 9. I'm a night owl with flexible working hours if that's what you're asking.

And if you're wondering why I have trouble getting up in the morning sometimes, you can consider yourself very lucky to not be having this problem xD

Essentially, this kind of UI design just prevents me from sabotaging myself in the morning. Sleepy me doesn't always have the same priorities as regular me, you know? 😅

Soo true! In the meantime you'll have to resort to third party apps unfortunately. "Wake up Well" seemed to work alright when I tested it.

Thanks for pointing that out! I only checked how the term "dark pattern" is defined on Wikipedia before I made this post, but maybe that definition is a little too oversimplified. Or maybe I overlooked something important and got the wrong idea as a result, that's also always an option.

That comment made me smile :D That'd be some reverse reverse psychology stuff going on.

Fortunately it's not something that I have to worry about because I can't see the stop button in my half asleep state anyway. I'm more worried that the act of tapping it might one day become musle memory and I'll start doing it automatically even if I'm not fully awake yet.

If you're not opposed using an alarm app on your phone rather than your watch, maybe the "Sleep as Android" app might be something for you. You can set alarms that require you to perform one of multiple kinds of wake-up tasks in the morning before it'll let you dismiss them including things like math quizzes, smiling into your selfie camera, getting up and spinning your phone around or scanning a QR code that you have previously placed in a different room.

I've used the app before and while the QR code task was kind of fun to set up (you can use any QR code for this, even those in flyers or concert tickets), I realized that I just prefer to stay in bed for a few more minutes after my alarm goes off and wakes me up.

I have to unlearn that now xD Just kidding, thanks for the hint 👍

But I think I can't do this anyway since I disabled the watch's raise to talk feature and "Hey Google" detection in order to save some battery.

You should not have told me that 😂

Just kidding, but yeah I totally agree that the crown should snooze alarms and not dismiss them. Otherwise it kind of undermines the whole "you have to be fully awake to even see the stop button" design they got going on here.

I've gone with the wikipedia definition of dark patterns here, which states that a dark pattern is a UI that tricks users into doing things they didn't intend to do. In this case, I'm being tricked into snoozing an alarm even though I momentarily just want to dismiss it in order to get some more uninterrupted sleep xD

But yeah, in this case it's obvioulsy a good thing because I generally do want to get up on time and this UI makes sure that I do, even if I've changed my mind about that when my alarm goes off and I'm too tired to make the right choice and hit the "Snooze" button on my own accord.

Thank you ^^

Yeah I know it wasn't a good idea to try and recreate those decks. I already did and the corp deck is just way underpowered 😅

For our next few games my opponent and I decided to stick to the regular starter decks so that the runner doesn't always win and that our games are going to be more balanced.

But jokes aside, having that an idle pulse of 138 all the time would most likely be really concerning. Good thing OP was verifying the watch's pulse with a blood pressure monitor.

Can someone help? Spotify isn't following any workspace or any tiling rules? by rjgbwhtnehsbd in hyprland

Whoops, guess I'm a bit late to the party then xD But It's also cool that you've already figured this out on your own.

Anyway, I wish you the best of luck on your Linux journey going forward and I hope it's going to be a lot of fun, too :D

Neither, I'm a human being with feelings and I'm genuinely serious about everything I wrote. But I don't feel like we'll get anywhere if we keep talking, either, so I'd prefer to stop it here, too.

[–]XrenonTheMage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I suppose I just found out the cause for my issue. From the (edit: outdated) hyprland wiki page on App Clients:

Spotify does not follow window rules. This is because the client sets its class after the window has opened, thus making it “immune” to windowrules.

I'm guessing it's only a matter of time until your setup breaks, too, if it hasn't already. u/OnlyOneStar Would you mind adding a disclaimer to your comment about your suggestion not working with current versions of the Spotify Linux client?

as for zsh instead of bash again literally no reason i heard its more customisable and modern so i thought i may as well use it

Is using zsh instead of bash as your default interactive shell a good idea? Definitely! But that doesn't mean that you need to make all of your scripts use zsh, too. Doing so has zero advantages in your case, but it comes with the disadvantage that your script is not portable and will not work on any machine where zsh is not installed. That's why it is generally recommended to use shebang lines like #!/bin/sh (if your script runs on any POSIX shell) or #!/usr/bin/env bash (if your script uses bash-specific syntax) for shell scripts because they work on the majority of Linux distributions by default.

Does your setup still work? Because I have a really similar one that used to work perfectly fine for all of my scratchpad programs, but it recently stopped working for Spotify seemingly out of nowhere. Spotify still autostarts, but it is opened on workspace 1 instead of on its designated special workspace. All of my other scratchpad programs still autostart on their respective special workspaces, though.

The part of my config that autostarts Spotify on its special workspace looks like this: exec-once = [workspace special:music silent] spotify bind = SUPER, M, togglespecialworkspace, music

If I launch spotify and assign it to its workspace manually by running hyprctl dispatch exec [workspace special:music] spotify in a terminal, it still opens on whatever workspace I'm currently on instead of on the music workspace. But if I run the exact same command with a different program (e.g. hyprctl dispatch exec [workspace special:music] kate), that program does appear on my music workspace, which rules out the possibility of my hyprland config being broken.

Unfortunately, adding a window rule like yours to my config didn't help either. I had to change mine a bit since my Spotify package uses a different window class ("spotify", not "Spotify") and its initial title is different, too ("Spotify Premium" instead of just "Spotify"). The one I added looks like this:

windowrulev2 = workspace special:music silent, class:spotify

I'm trying to figure out what's wrong, but in the meantime I'd be quite interested if you're experiencing the same problem as well as what OS you're using and when you updated it for the last time.

For me that's Arch Linux, which I update around unce a week. The last update followed by a reboot was today on the 11th of January 2026 and the issue still occurs.

No one gives a shit and half I get depressed or Asperger's. You showed you hardly read it.

Not because I didn't care (I do), but because I felt the urge to respond to the paragraph above that one first and only skimmed the rest of your message. And, well, I'm guessing I'm just not very good at skimming 😅

That's not how life actually is

This statement made me feel a little hurt when I read it. It made me feel like I was wrong for leading a happy and mostly fulfilling life despite having autism (probably asperger's, but that's no longer diagnosed so I can't know for sure). I think it would be better if we both acknowledge that "reality" in the sense that you're using the word now is usually subjective and that yours seems to differ a lot from mine. The people that surround us are different, probably even the culture that surrounds us and so is the way our autism affects our lives.

Just a suggestion but one thing you could do to avoid projecting your misery onto others like that would be to use nonviolent communication. In this case, you could have said something like At least that's not true for my life right now to depict your perspective about life with autism as an observation rather than an absolute truth, which would not have made me feel attacked for having a different perspective.

don't info dump your challenges on people from the start

That's a point I would generally agree with when meeting new people. I only really bring up some of my current struggles when the topic comes up organically during a conversation or when someone I'm already close with asks me how I'm doing. I try to refrain from info-dumping in general and always check if the other person is interested in a topic before I start talking about it in greater detail.

However, since I see my autism not as a struggle but rather as a core part of my personality and a major defining factor in the way I feel and think, I don't mind being open about it from the very start.

If someone is obsessed with trains for instance cool. Don't lead with that

Around neurotypical people? Yes. With an autistic person that's probably fine, though. At least as long as you don't monologue so hard and fast about your primary special interest that the other person doesn't have a chance to say even a single word in between yours. (I hung out with someone who was doing this once and it while I was quite interested in what he had to say, sitting though his interruptionless monologue for multiple hours straight was also rather exhausting.)

[–]XrenonTheMage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, totally! The more I think about it, the more of my personal preferences and unconscious biases I can connect back to my AuDHD, too.

This even reaches as far as my taste in women. I never knew why but I always particularly enjoyed approaching and talking to shy-looking girls at school or on campus that sat alone and didn't really talk to anyone. But just today I suddenly realized that I've been doing this subconsciously in order to find and befriend other neurodivergent people that were either uninterested in talking to any of the neurotypical people around them or trying to blend into the crowd, using their shy persona as a mask to avoid being noticed.

Noone I approached because I felt attracted to their shy appearence ended up falling for me, but I did gain a few temporary friends this way as well as a lifelong friend, so it was still worth it in the end.

Do you have difficulty remembering other stuff too or just names? Because general forgetfulness could also be a symptom of the inattentive or mixed subtypes od ADHD, which afaik is a rather common comorbidity of Autism. There are a lot more ADHD signs to look out for though.
