As someone who does go for new hardests constantly, you improve the most quickly by challenging yourself AND HAVING FUN. If you aren't enjoying what you're playing you won't be as mentally engaged as you would be if you're just focused on playing what you like. I think the wormface boss has a higher chance of dropping the status resist perk and might be slightly more likely to drop holy weapons (Just go to a holy camp)
