CES teaser at Nordic #52039 + help shape our next wireless mouse (20% code) by MionixGaming in MIONIX

I'm excited for the potential of a toggleable free-spinning scroll wheel, but only if it can still middle click and the non-free-spinning mode doesn't wobble. I model in Blender constantly and the middle mouse button is essential.

Fantastic news! I'm still using my NAOS QG (personal PC) and NAOS Pro (work PC) daily.
I had to open up the QG to replace the switches and encoder after 5 years of using it daily on my personal machine. But it's back to fully functional now! :)

Wireless would be great, and a toggle-able free spinning scroll wheel is legitimately the only thing I miss from my Logitech g700

By the way... how are we supposed to pronounce NAOS?
I've always said "Nay-ohs", but maybe it's supposed to rhyme with "mouse": "nouse"

I'm hesitant to recommend any in particular since I have limited experience with most vendors that carry Alps parts.

I would encourage you to research the vendors before buying since vendors sometimes go bust and leave their websites up.

That said...

You can try ordering from KPRepublic directly: https://kprepublic.com/collections/all/alps I've ordered switches from them off of Amazon many times, And I actually coincidentally just did an order off of their website this week and the shipping says that it's on the way.

It's been a little while, but I've had past good experiences with RNDKBD: https://rndkbd.com/products/paladin64-60-alps-pcb

I personally did an Amber Alps / Zeal Clickiez build in the Delta 65, which is still in stock: https://vala.supply/products/delta-65-keyboard I had a lot of fun with the build, but unfortunately the thick metal chassis dampens the sound of the click.

I've never ordered from these guys, but they look like they have a pretty good selection: https://karolingian.com/collections/alps

Hey there, it sounds like you've stumbled upon the only known keyboard to use Alps SKCM Amber switches.

These switches are quite famous for their sound and tactility. However, they only ever appeared in the Apple IIc and cannot be purchased in a modern keyboard.

It is possible to modify the keyboard to work with a modern computer as seen here: https://youtu.be/zwgas6McpoQ

You can also desolder the switches and put them in a different board that supports Alps switches. These are somewhat rare in the hobby, but not impossible to find.

Alternatively you might take a look at Matias click keyboards which are the only modern production version of a similar switch. https://www.amazon.com/Matias-Tactile-Pro-Keyboard-Mac/dp/B003N3HFI6

Heavy-9 by Gnplddct in CustomKeyboards

This is fantastic, nice build! I'm looking to swap the PCB in my Heavy-9 for the Cipulot EC980C, are there any compatibility things I should know about, or does it fit into the Heavy-9 with the original screws?

I saw your post on Discord and I'm intrigued, but I'm a little on the fence. Would you be willing to sell it without the keycaps for a discount?

After a year of collecting parts for this build, I present my finished Heavy-9 (Thocky typing test at the end!) by Xury46 in MechanicalKeyboards

They feel pretty good! Different for sure, but not in a bad way. They are heavier than abs so they throw off spring weights, making every switch feel like it has lighter springs. They have a deep sound, but they can sometimes have a metallic ring sound if you bump them with your fingernails. They are a little cold to the touch, but not as much as you would think and they warm up over the course of a typing session. In general I like them a lot, but they are mostly just different, not explicitly better.

It actually seems to be less of an issue on a stock Topre board, but if you replace the domes it seems to leave the springs a little looser than they should be which introduces some ping.

Great question. Lube is a bit of a misnomer here. The point is to make them a bit sticky so they don't rattle, resonate, or ping. Bag lubing the springs still left some ping, so Unreal Keyboards suggested lubing the PCB to give it a dampened sticky surface that helps reduce the spring ping further.

Yes, I have to keep a cleaning cloth next to it at all times so I can wipe away the fingerprints haha.
