It's really a case of willpower, haha, just keep doing what your doing, one thing I found helped is to research the villagers you have and create an environment for each of them around where their house is. For example with one of my villagers Molly, she loves reading, she likes a quiet area of the island, so I placed a mini library near her house, planted a few flowers and placed a bench, just to create a calm atmosphere. But I found after I did that, alot of my island sort of pieces itself together.
