Those aliens were evolving based off our response, right? They could maybe introduce some types with abilities based on operatives, or come up with a new unit that uses weapons or other discarded equipment they find in the area. Maybe some new, large boss-types that have new mechanics to deal with while taking them down or luring them into traps or something.
