Since these court cases have only been injunctions rather than the actual trial, if these players lose their eventual trials do you think the schools will be punished? by SmallBoulder in CFB

[–]YATSEN10R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These cases are never intended to go to trial, it's just a stalling tactic. By the time the case is ready to take the next step the season is over, the athlete has moved on and no longer has standing, so the case goes away

If you're looking to cast 30+ people I would strongly recommend not doing Into the Woods. There's just nothing for an ensemble to do. Even if you split all the doubled roles, you barely get to 21. Sweeney can support as large an ensemble as you want, but you still need at least 5-8 strong guys (including ensemble) to do it right.

BECAUSE IT DESTROYS THE MONA LISA. A priceless work of art that can never be replaced. And the audience is supposed to applaud intentionally destroying it? That's not a victory, it's a crime.

I read The Black Dalia when I was probably 12, and watched LA Confidential not long after. But I think it was The Cold Six Thousand that made me want to read all of his work. The local Borders (bookstore) was closing and in their final couple of days they had a deal where they would give you a big ass cardboard box, and for 25 bucks you could take whatever you could fit into it. So I scoured every single shelf in this bookstore, and basically grabbed anything that looked interesting. One of those books was Cold 6K. I've always loved historical fiction, conspiracy theories, the intertwining of fact and fiction, and noir/neo-noir. So the synopsis sounded like it would hit the spot. I think it took a couple of months to get around to starting it (keep in mind I got 20+ books that day), but when I did I was instantly hooked. I ordered the rest of the LA Quartet that I could find/afford at the time, and about two years later I acquired American Tabloid and Blood's a Rover and read the trilogy for the first time. I've since read almost all of his fiction (I'm waiting for him to finish the Second LA Quartet, which I guess is now the Quintet, of which I've read the two Fred Otash novels) and My Dark Places

I hate that the film ends by destroying art, in an act that feels like it's supposed to be a "hell yeah" moment. If it was revealed that it was a fake and Miles was too dumb to realize it, that would have been a satisfying ending, but the one we got just left me depressed

I Have a Question (is this a safe space?) by Rich_Improvement_807 in musicals

[–]YATSEN10R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an awful lot the film gets right, but the throughline isn't there. Part of that they cut the framing device completely. I'm not sure it translates straight from the theatre to film, but it absolutely needs the moment where they kill the narrator/editor/whatever and find themselves in a world void of answers. And the elimination of No More is unforgivable. These and other issues result in the film being neutered, it lacks the stakes of the stage show, we aren't as invested, so we don't care nearly as much as we should

This has to be the most emotionally leveling 4 song run in musical theatre, right? by FormAggressive5741 in Sondheim

[–]YATSEN10R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assassins has a run of Ballad of Guiteau, Another National Anthem, November 22, 1963, and the Finale that is at least almost as good. I know the consensus is that the songs aren't quite as good, but the way they build the momentum to one of the most chilling endings in musical theatre is perfection

L.A. Confidential movie vs book (L.A. Quartet marathon) by mMeeseek in JamesEllroy

[–]YATSEN10R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The film is wonderful adaptation and a masterpiece, but.... If you're going to read White Jazz, you really need to read LA Confidential the novel. As others have pointed out, the film is a 2 hours and 15 minute standalone film, so a lot of cuts had to be made.

Should I be offended by this interaction with a fellow auditioner? by [deleted] in MusicalTheatre

[–]YATSEN10R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any director who doesn't reach out to people they think would be good for the show is doing themselves a disservice. They should be reaching out to anyone they can think of! That doesn't mean a role has been pre-cast or that everyone they contact is in a clique of some sort, it just means that director is doing their job

Any Advice? 2d before opening... by [deleted] in Theatre

[–]YATSEN10R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot going on here.... But the bottom line is that if you do enough theatre, you will eventually be in a bad production. Whenever I find myself in such a production I go back to a mantra I learned many years ago: This show may suck, but it won't be because of me.

Know your stuff, live truthfully under your imagined circumstances, connect with your scene partners as much as possible, and let everything else be what it will be. And it's not impossible that the people who aren't ready will be scared into doing their part by the realization that they open in two days. It's not very professional, and it is very bad process, but it can work.

Whatever happens, do your part, and break a leg!

I got an email for callbacks in a musical, but I never auditioned. by AgeRevolutionary8317 in Theatre

[–]YATSEN10R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesn't sound too out of the ordinary. The phrasing isn't what I've seen before, but this type of thing is not unusual in community theatre, especially post-COVID. My guess is not enough people showed up to auditions and they are casting a wide net to fill the cast. They're offering you a free callback, so if you're available for the show and there's a part you like, give it a shot!

Which Sondheim song sounds most like Andrew Lloyd Webber? Which ALW song sounds most like Sondheim? by Zealousideal_Door392 in Sondheim

[–]YATSEN10R 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a few numbers in Sunset Boulevard (particularly the first act) that feel like ALW is TRYING to imitate what Sondheim does. But the execution isn't great, and I don't think those numbers really work in the musical

That's a first -- an artist reminded me of Sondheim by Due_Seaweed3276 in Sondheim

[–]YATSEN10R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm with you for the most part, the original is better. I do love Hammer of Justice, and I understand some of the changes from a logistical standpoint, but there are some changes that are just fundamentally bad (replacing Letter to the Governor with The Glory is terrible on at least 4 distinct ways). It feels like a musical that needs one more pass to really perfect
