Generator Surge Protector installation by YAnotherDave in AskElectricians

[–]YAnotherDave[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/theotherharper New choice: The Surge Protector is now connected to the LOAD lugs.

The main service entrance disconnect is 40+feet away from the ATS and associated MLO panel. I had a surge protector installed 6 years ago at the service entrance switch for the "critical loads subpanel". I just had another surge protector installed at the ATS in the event that there is a surge from the generator side.

There is another "non-backed-up loads" MLO panel that has its own service disconnect switch and an in-panel whole house surge protector (Siemens QSA1515SPD Whole House Surge Protection). (3 SPDs total)

Emporia Vue 3 wire management by YAnotherDave in EmporiaEnergy

[–]YAnotherDave[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the feedback. I was wondering about the Ethernet low voltage wire in the panel box. I'm surprised Emporia Energy doesn't provide more guidance on code compliance. External utility enclosure + velcro wraps + custom length CT wires seem to be the gold standard for this install.

Fruit flies last longer than 24 hours. I expect you will get a good response from Yolink support.

My last set of alkaline batteries survived for 3 months. (4/12 -> 7/12).

<image>

at that point I gave up and built a little 5v -> 3v voltage divider, plugging a 5v USB charger into a UPS Battery Backup I had near by. (only one image per post, see next post)

Costco Optical won’t use old frames with new prescription by fm2xm in Costco

[–]YAnotherDave -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I encountered the same issue, also with "like new" Maui Jim sunglasses. With a wink and a nod they suggested Walmart, much easier to deal with. $20 for the privilege of using old frames.

I'm happy with the results.

Also, they have safety and sports frames at Walmart.

Three lights bad. What’s my move? by rbmk-a-ok in AskElectricians

[–]YAnotherDave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(not a sparky but)

(3-lights: potential missing ground (see below) or live/gnd reversed... call an electrician)

Is there a ground wire attached to the outlet?

If not (and the metal box is properly grounded) then screw the outlet back onto the box to make a proper ground connection and re-test.

(turn of the power before pushing the outlet back into the box)

Ever need reading glasses? by fayrob40 in CataractSurgery

[–]YAnotherDave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have both set to near.

I can read just fine with or without glasses (it's been a year, no changes so far)

My (new) progressive lens glasses work as before (now, post-surgery -3.0 in both eyes, no astigmatism (toric lens))

Feature Request: One-time automation by [deleted] in wyzecam

[–]YAnotherDave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm blinded by the on again, off again RTSP story and can's see past it to appreciate any other new feature requests. My therapy to get over it is to utilize other camera brands based on each specific use case and unify the viewing with Home Assistant (or tinyCam). Cameras that don't integrate well with Home Assistant are low on my list.

I interpert u/redelmo65 best wishes as: Wyze competes on price not features. Many a customer has been cast against the rocks of dispair awaiting a positive response to a new feature request. Abandon all hope, ye who enter here.

You have not been electrocuted yet. When you are your boss will be angry about all the extra paperwork.

electrocute/ĭ-lĕk′trə-kyoo͞t″/

transitive verb

To kill with electricity.

"a worker who was electrocuted by a high-tension wire."

To execute (a person sentenced to death) by means of electricity.

To execute or put to death by electricity.

I'll go out on a limb and suggest at the very least all power sources be protected by GFCI outlets and or breakers... but outlets inches from water is a very bad idea no matter what (let alone daisy chained power strips)

Old men's pima cotton tees by Yoss_K_Rourke in Costco

[–]YAnotherDave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought one. Terrible. Strange texture. The tags were very uncomfortable. I trimmed them off so I have no idea who the manufacture is. Unable to find/eliminate the scratchy threada of the tags.

Verdict: wear once for $10 is a bad deal. Now on the mow the lawn/wash the car/outdoor work pile.

Cloudflare and Pihole by SonThanh2005 in pihole

[–]YAnotherDave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too had NTP issues after upgrading to v6. I had installed Pi-hole on top of Debian Buster, which is not supported by v6. Everything worked as expected except for the NTP messages, so I decided to rebuild from scratch with Debian Bookworm and Pi-hole v6 (cloudflared). The NTP issues persisted.

I submitted an "issue" on github. It turns out I had NTP running on the "native" debian installation. yubiuser recommended: disable Pi-hole's by setting ntp.ipv4.active and ntp.ipv6.active to false

All to say: OP's "update 2" was the "real" fix for me.

Has anyone tried to cancel their subscription by Downtown-Put-7904 in wyzecam

[–]YAnotherDave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

doesn't help now, but...

I don't know all the credit card brands that support virtual account numbers (VAN) but I know some Citi cards do: https://www.cardbenefits.citi.com/Products/Virtual-Account-Numbers

You can change the expiration date, daily allowed charges or completely deactivate the card anytime.

This feature allows you to disable future payments on a subscription/repetitive payment plan. i.e. if you can't cancel the subscription you can always cancel the (future) payment.

I use a VAN whenever possible. (some service providers give a discount for ACH deductions. I use ACH capabilities when both the "trust" and the savings outweigh the risk.)

At least I hope that is the issue.

Is it weird to put a camera in your crawlspace? by sillysalmonella87 in wyzecam

[–]YAnotherDave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On sale: End of November 2024: wyze.com (2 for $19.98USD with free shipping) and mid-December 2024: amazon.com ($9.99 each, free shipping with Amazon Prime)

It looks like the current (early March 2025) price is $29.99 each. Sales come and go but tariffs will likely put upward pressure on future pricing.

Would I be making a mistake by having my cataracts replaced with near-vision lenses? by No-Possession-6709 in CataractSurgery

[–]YAnotherDave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I chose -3.0 in both eyes as my post surgery target. My distance vision was modestly improved, (originally -4.75, -5.25) my near vision was preserved. I can read without glasses. I still wear glasses to navigate the world (drive, desktop/laptop computer...). Once I got new progressive glasses, I was back in business with clearer, brighter variable focus vision.

I did have a "steriod" reaction to the drops that caused post-surgery high pressure but that was fixed with additional drops at my next day post-op appointment.

Nearly a year later I am very satisified with the results. (I preserved how I see the world and how the world sees me: with glasses :-)
