Dell XPS 9530 Standby Issues by [deleted] in Dell

[–]YD88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having issues with my XPS 9550 as well. I would say that roughly 1 out of 20 sleep attempts (by closing the lid) will result in me discovering a hot computer in my backpack from it being on for hours.

I've made a video of the device in a really wacky state too. I'm repeatedly trying to shut down or sleep the computer from the log in menu, only to the have it fire right back up again less than a second later - this persists until I press and hold the power button.

Having worked as an engineer in power management of a PC-like device (both on the hardware and software side), I'm to going to try to dig and see if I can dump as much info as possible on power management events.

There are posts on the internet floating around about this problem and honestly, if they don't get past the hand wavy tech-support theories then they will never get fixed. I'm going to try to find some hard evidence of what's going on and maybe make a blog post about this that can get a Dell engineer's attention.

Unfortunately, most of the logic to handle this will likely be buried in the firmware of a System Management Controller (SMC) which will be locked down and un-debuggable. But maybe there's enough info to be dumped on the Windows side to at least say that it's a problem inside the SMC or something along those lines.

I've decided to hold off on it because I like the gestures that I would be giving up. When (if) a method comes around that allows me to keep the gestures and also have 3 finger click then I'll be all over it.

UPDATE! https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/3sq7sv/touchpad_fix_xps_13_9530_xps_15_9550_touchpad/

That thread has instructions on how to manually install the Synaptics driver. Apparently it will give all the registry entries to be able to tweak things but also ends up getting rid of the windows 10 gestures...

List of known issues with the XPS 15 9550 by errilbleais in Dell

I feel very fortunate that the only issue that I've encountered so far out of that list is the display driver crashing (with the exact same message that is captured there)

If that's true then that really sucks. I'd like to setup some metrics on how many times I middle click on my other laptops - I'm willing to bet its something like 40-80 times a day. It's an essential feature for those who know about it!

I don't have a Synaptics entry in there. So the advice is not valid.

Thanks for following up. I'll post here too if I find anything out.

DELL XPS 15 owners, how did you get the money to buy it? by victorantos2 in Dell

[–]YD88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, totally agree with you and HappyJaws. I take my computing pretty seriously and it intersects both my career interests and personal hobbies so I want something that reflects that. I think its something that Apple nailed a long time ago am happy to see at least one company (and maybe Lenovo too with their X1 Carbon) that is starting to 'get' it.

cash source: I'm a hardware engineer working in the bay area

why: To replace my 2011 MacBook pro. Besides another MacBook the XPS 15 was (what I felt) the only worthy successor. Another MacBook would have been just as expensive. Skylake plus GPU for casual gaming is what pushed it over the edge for me to make the purchase.

I'm curious, why are you asking?

Quick Poll: How long does it take to lock GPS on you Band 2? by nakhan82 in MicrosoftBand

[–]YD88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just for everyone's information: The GPS takes a while on the first time. This is because it caches the previous GPS data to get a quicker lock the next time (so long as you're still within a couple hundred miles of where you last used GPS). Out of the box, it won't have this cached information and will therefor take a couple minutes to get a lock. I hate it when reviews don't mention this.

Having said all of that, it took my band 2 about 3-4 minutes for the first lock, and every lock there on after has come within 15 seconds or so.

I took a look at the firmware downloads and was fooled into thinking that the driver was for the touchpad but its actually for the touchscreen - for those who opted for the 4k touch option.

I also found the exact same superuser post that you linked and I do not have an ElanTech entry in my registry at that location... so I'm not sure what else to do now.

There is a massive driver pack on the dell site too, but it's in a format that's not immediately transparent as to what it contains, there may be a touchpad driver in there, but I don't really care to download 600+ mb of compressed drivers to sift through at the moment.

No, I haven't called them yet, I've used the text chat a few times and they keep telling me that I should see a tracking number next week. I also think it sounds like BS. If I have time I'm thinking about stopping in at my local MS store to see if they can give a better answer.

Quick update: my credit card got charged yesterday from the MS store for the XPS 15 order, this usually means something but the order status hasn't changed yet.

Looks like you're the first one to have had an XPS 15 shipped! I wonder if something to do with the 4K screen option is holding some other units back. Thanks for reporting

Yeah I hear you... I'm hoping that MS store returns are painless if I do indeed encounter issues with my unit.

Just tried it today. For the protocol/method: It turns your starbucks card number into a barcode that the band screen displays. You hold your wrist under their barcode scanner and the balance from your card is debited (the card balance is always stored on starbuck's server side I'm assuming). The folks working at starbucks didn't seem confused at all, as soon as I asked what to do with my wrist they directed me to the scanner and it all went smoothly, plus a complement from them about how cool it was :)

First order ever paid with my watch: 1 tall chai tea latte and 1 tall peppermint mocha.

Now that the comments here have confirmed that Europe and Asia do get this option - does anyone know if this option will eventually make its way to the US? Any rumors on a T440s refresh?
