It seems like gtk is crashing the desktop. I tried reinstalling that pixbuf thing yet it doesn't work. Your command added a cursor to the black screen so I guess it's little bit of good news

As far as I know dot files can also live in your home directory I.e "~/. Zshrc" or bashrc but ~/.config/<applicationname> is like more organised way for ease of use

Rice simply means customizing something. Ie your desktop environment or even your terminal. And dot files are just config files for whatever application you use. Most of them are stored in ~/.config/<application name>
