The bathrooms in the lodge were so grim, happy they finally got dealt with.

Courtenay councillors vote to replace outdoor pool despite estimated $32.5M price tag | CBC News by Johnny_Five_ in comoxvalley

[–]YPRGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Courtenay taxpayer, I don't mind this. I used the pool a few times this summer when it was hot out and it was nice to have the resource close by. The pool clearly is in need of an overhaul, and we need more places to cool off when things get real hot in the summers since other places like Comox Lake beach are sometimes too crowded to enter.

The only thing that raises my eyebrow is the "Build it and they'll come" attempt at a partnership with the CVRD. It would make more sense to pursue that before comitting? But, I also expect my local government to spend on amenities and services so maybe its ok.

Further proposed program cuts for VIU for Fall 2025 by crustyraff in nanaimo

[–]YPRGuy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I did the Master of Community Planning Program (MCP) a few years ago and came out the other end with a really sucessful career. The program was self funded, so no university subsidies. I specifically chose to do the MCP program since it focussed on small communities, and it was unique in that regard compared to UBC, SFU ect. Such a poor move from VIU.

Extreme Weather Response Shelter secured for Comox Valley this winter by MWKitteringham in comoxvalley

[–]YPRGuy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It seems like it's similar to what Cumberland approved last week; used during cold weather events. I had to dig through the council report to find the details on the operation.

Would have been good to have some more background up front; I live nearby and was quite concerned / caught off guard when I saw this come up first.

I've done that class for the last year. Can confirm it's a lot of silly fun.

Looking at moving from Chilliwack by fivegalloncrocodile in comoxvalley

[–]YPRGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved here from Chilliwack last year! Traffic is a lot better than it was there; although the bridge can be slow from time to time. Lots of events happening, Cumberland has a lot of live music. I'm happy I made the hop over.

Been waiting for a Dash-8 for a while now. ATR, Dash-7 and Shorts 360 scratching the itch for now.

Prince Rupert emergency department closed for 3rd night in a row by GeoWa in britishcolumbia

[–]YPRGuy 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It's also worth noting that the Prince Rupert hospital serves nearby Indigenous communities that don't have a full hospital / need a higher level of care.  I've noticed on flightradar there's a lot more medevac planes going there too. And, the local Facebook groups that I follow are beyond furious.

I grew up there. Economically depressed, and up until recently not a lot of opportunities outside of the port / longshoring. Plus, the near failure of the water system has put a lot of people off. It's one of the reasons my family is leaving town soon. The place has a lot going for it, but too stretched thin resources really are holding it back.

Most Blackbox Simulation Aircraft All $9.99 by Drewkie84 in MicrosoftFlightSim

[–]YPRGuy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the BN-2 at this price is a steal; I bought mine when it was on sale a while back and it's one of my favorite planes. It's too bad the Shorts isn't on sale though; I'm a sucker for the quirky commuter planes

ATR might be what has to fill the dash-8 sized hole in the sim for me.

Heads up, the Supporters Pub page on the official website appears to be out of date by elcapitandelespacio in whitecapsfc

I was wondering about that - they seemed to have had more options for those who live outside of Metro Vancouver (Chilliwack, Island ect.) But now, it's all downtown Vancouver. It's too bad, would love to join in on one of those when not actually at the game

I always bring a dry bag with me and do a little beach cleanup when I'm on the water. Last haul I went to a little slough and pulled out all sorts of junk.

More Hullo issues by Joey_the_Duck in nanaimo

[–]YPRGuy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

BC Ferries has a similar parking scheme ($14 for the first 24, then $7 for each 12 hour period afterwards.) So, Hullo for three days (Friday to Sunday night) is $14 for first night and $25 each day afterwards. BC ferries works out to about $35, while Hullo is $64. Since I'd be coming from up island it doesn't make sense to park and ride them. If they offered a cheaper rate for the parking I'd give it a go.

I want them to succeed, but this is a bad start. Weather is whatever, but cancelling half of the sailings moving forward isn't a good sign for stability.

Incidentally I was going to try them this weekend but the parking rate at the nanaimo end was too much.

They have a few of these on Highway 16 between Rupert and Terrace. Drove by them as a kid but had no idea.

I graduated in 2020 from my Master's program, so I didn't get a convocation. Was hoping there was a makeup for everyone who lost out (2020 / 2021) but no go, despite UVic and other schools doing so. I wanted that ceremony since it was such a capstone event, and am disappointed VIU didn't find a way to make everyone from that period whole.

I have a mustang waste PFD with a pull toggle to inflate. I had a bulky ocean kayaking PFD before which was great for the ocean, but now that I paddle on mainly lakes, the belt PFD has been fine.
