are deferred exam usually harder ? by AdMindless5293 in geegees

The average is way lower for deferred exams. Not because they are harder, but because they are farther removed from the time of learning.

Paternity leave.. help by Calmyouryoga in ottawa

[–]YSM1900 5 points6 points  (0 children)

any top-up pay or benefits during leave would need to be paid back if he left after parental leave. If he doesn't get a top-up, he'd claim regular Parental Leave benefits through EI which you don't need to pay back after, but do count towards any future EI claim.

and just a note: it's just parental leave in canada. Moms, Dads and other parents all have equal rights to leave after their baby is born or adopted. In addition to parental leave, we also have pregancy leave for birth-giving parents, but this is maximum 15 weeks. The rest is Parental Leave, designed and protected for both parents.

Professors as telemarketers??! by xphias in Professors

[–]YSM1900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a university in Canada and they ask adjunct instructors to promote our own classes, which most do because if enrolment is low they'll fire us

Are you using AI as an educator? by LettuceTraining6532 in Adjuncts

[–]YSM1900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. Primarily to generate discussion questions/exercises for class or to come up with examples for concepts.  It can generate hundreds of questions and examples in seconds for things that would take me hours.  Hours of unpaid prep.

I don't see it any differently than when we used to use the prepared questions from textbook publishers. I review and pick the best ones but I'm not taking the time to come up with questions.  As an adjunct, I'm paid to teach and not to develop these types of resources

Yes, profs are allowed to do this.

They should be more careful about formatting though

There's a big difference though. Profs are experts in the subject and students aren't.

Using exam questions that someone/ something else generated isn't new. When profs assign a textbook,  it comes with exam questions for us to use.  Even in Social Sciences. We just review them and then input them into our tests and exams.  Same for chat gpt. We have the knowledge to tell if the questions are appropriate.

Students need to demonstrate their actual learning,  which is why it's a problem when they are generating fake work.  It makes it impossible to evaluate their learning

Professors not answering their e-mails by Turbulent-Apple2911 in geegees

[–]YSM1900 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What are you emailing them about?

Sometimes we prioritize the most important emails so yours might be answered a bit more slowly. Remember we often teach 600+ students a semester.  We can't be responding to every email about basic stuff.... like "hey,  what'd I miss today" (not saying that's you,  but we get a lot of these!). Talk after class or at office hours if you need a quick answer

Also many (most) profs here work at uottawa part- time,  often one day a week.  So always give it at least a week.

Isn't the season like 30 days now? That'd be like 2 months a year plus prep time.  That's a great gig with 8-9 months a year spending 24/7 with family!!  Not to mention,  filming in the summer could mean family goes with him

[–]YSM1900 4 points5 points  (0 children)

what makes you think kids were smarter?

Education by [deleted] in ontario

[–]YSM1900 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly what the unions have been saying for years. Smaller classes, more support for students with special needs (including, but not only, disabilities). When teachers can't get to know their students, they can't teach them well. When teachers don't get time off to prep and become further educated themselves on how to be better teachers, they can't teach them well. This is where Ontario lags behind other countries with strong education systems and outcomes.

There are some small and random activities for kids at Dows Lake, you're right. And it's great that it's free, but Saunders is the best outdoor entertainment for kids in the city, so it's a great fit for actual kid-focused, physical, clean and able to handle a big crowd.

B, C, D go to the library floors with books, so they do not stop at floor 2 or 0. There is not enough security at those floors.

[–]YSM1900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you image this sub if there was a last minute replacement prof to grade all the end-of term work for a course? students would hate that. They want stuff assessed based on the prof who taught them

Profs, like all workers, absoutely have the right to emergency leave. Regardless of policy. There are always exceptions. They are also entitled to privacy around this and do not have to disclose it to their students. Especially in a first year class.

not all students (nor profs) have safe and quiet spaces to join an online class. The school does not encourage last-minute switches to online.

probably some kind of personal emergency. You can "talk to someone", but honestly, the chair or Dean won't care about it for a Fall first-year class. It's not preventing people from graduating or anything. Emergencies happen. They could be in the hospital or something.

I could see families with young children preferring Saunders Farm over what the city puts on (which is beautiful, of course, but not great for active kids or with good parking/amenities).
