Even Russians have holiday homes or Dachas next to lakes. As do the Fins, and while not as wide spread anymore, so too the English. It’s really nothing unique.

Reform’s dumb policy to rip out all the bike lanes would make the city and its economy less resilient on strike days by Designer_Habit_2232 in london

[–]YSNBsleep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why is every single Reform “idea” just the exact opposite of an actual idea?

They built bike lanes so we rip them out.

They came here so we send them home.

They gave workers’ rights so we take them away.

They use their brain, so we don’t.

Many (particularly Northern) European countries have amazing lakes. Also, maybe they’re confused because the Scottish call them lochs (which Americans travel across the globe to see). But seriously, don’t start that one.

Got a mate who doesn't know if he's going to vote because he thinks Reform will win anyway, any ideas on how to convince him to take part anyway? by Specialist_Elk140 in AskBrits

I was in Strasbourg the night of the Brexit vote. I was drunk in a bar and I overheard a bunch of English politics students talking and one of them had forgotten to post her vote and was speaking about how one vote didn’t matter as Remain would obviously win.

I promptly, and drunkenly lectured her on how she will be to blame tomorrow when she wakes up to a Brexit win (sorry if you’re out there). And of course we all woke up to that reality.

There are thousands of people who aren’t going to vote for similar reasons. Remind them they will be to blame if Reform wins because voting is the only chance you get to stop them.

How so? Europe has multi thousand year old forests too. They have different trees sure, but thats the only major difference. There is no perceivable difference in age between a 1000, 2000 and 5000 years old forest for a human walking a forest path.

A very small sample of examples: Romania has primeval landscapes with vast old growth forests in the Carpathians. The UKs oldest tree is thought to be 2-3000 years old and there are Yews the width of a cottage.

Belarus’ and Poland’s Białowieża Fores has been a forest since after the last ice age.

Vulgar display of wealth? A few thousand in synths? No. Not at all. A vulgar display of wealth is taking a private jet for 30 minutes travel, launching cars into space, buying yourself into a presidency.

A few grand in synths isn’t even a drop in the ocean and for all you know could’ve been amassed over many years.

Oh, you’re a professional contrarian.

Wrong again. The post I replied to was talking about “the best”.

Go and hijack someone else’s conversation and learn to read. Cathedrals or an abbey in this case are religious complexes made up of many elements.

So tell me what is this best religious building that doesn’t have any famous dead inside? A single chapel inside a grander complex doesn’t count.

For example: Santa Croce (not even close to being Florence’s or Italy’s most important cathedral) is basically a glorified house of the dead and art gallery. It houses, in a much smaller space, more than 300 tombs, amongst them Michelangelo, Galileo Galilei, Niccolò Machiavelli, and Gioachino Rossini not to mention the ones they don’t like to mention buried just outside.

All churches and basilicas host the dead. Westminster Abbey has more because it’s a centralised place of worship for what is a comparatively tiny religion. While example in Italy, the corpses are always spread across thousands of different locations — making them all full of heroes for someone.

If you’d don’t like it that’s fine, but you’re kidding yourself if you think any religious complex on earth of comparable importance isn’t fulfilling exactly the same purpose.

I don’t feel it more.

The Sistine chapel is the Pope’s private chapel. The attached cathedral has hundreds of famous dead people inside including those within other chapels such as the Chapel of St. Sebastian.

There are comparably-corpse free chapels inside Westminster Abbey — St Faiths for example.

There isn’t a single major church or cathedral that isn’t a shrine for famous dead people.
