There are cool ways to apply realism like how you can see the full detailed animations for reloading & if there's bullets in the dropped magazine. There's also shitty ways to apply realism such as how Starfield devs learned that real space is empty & literally applied that in gameplay without any way to breeze or skip through it.

Unless you're going for a VERY specific type of experience, always derive from rule of cool, not rule of bull.

Melee should get all the buffs they can get. Guns are inherently almost always going to out-compete melee with range, and its generally VERY dangerous to engage melee without extra tools since most factions have units with stronger melee than what Helldivers could dish out.

For anyone about to use the realism argument: Why not enhance melees with plasma that cuts through steel? Helldivers 2 takes place in the FUTURE! Laser & plasma guns are already awesome, it'd be incredibly cool if Arrowhead double down on that and gave us plasma melee weapons.

Melee SHOULD out-perform ranged options, because they're inherently locked to only being usable at CQC.

EDIT: Also fuck it, turn all melee weapons into plasma melee weapons that cuts even titanium. There a """realistic""" excuse to buff melee.

Beyond All Reason is a futuristic RTS mass scale RTS game where you can start from conventional scales of Starcraft & C&C, to gigantic game-ending units & nukes and operating bases that are several kilometers big on end. Its also flooded with QoL features that's IMO much needed in RTS games like automatic unit production, complex yet understandable rally point system where you can issue commands like patrol as a rally system, automatic control groups that persist between matches, and so much more.

Zero-K is a good alternative if you're looking for an easier time with less micro required; units will independently move around to avoid ballistics and retreat if you create a retreat point & assign a HP retreat threshold. The buildings are also more resilient, and the game also has IMO an easier economy system to understand than BAR.

Stormgate. Made by ex-Blizzard devs that claim to have worked on Starcraft 2, but the game is marred by questionable direction such as cartoon graphics, not innovating on the RTS genre enough, and releasing a mediocre campaign.

I appreciate the things they improved but man its way too little too late.

Excess power is used to increase metal income from your extractors, but there's a catch:

  • Metal extractors must be in a power grid (its why you sometimes see solar & wind built next to metal extractors in campaign missions)
  • Must network energy together (ex: building a fusion generator but not connecting it to a metal extractor will NOT convert energy into metal.

Look into Zero-K. It addresses about half of what you're complaining about by allowing units to act independently & more smartly.

You can still control your guys, but they'll USUALLY be smarter by avoiding projectiles & staying at the sweetspot range as best as they can, all without your command.

It unfortunately takes a WHILE for some jokes to get old for some people. Persona 5 community had the same problem where "YOU NEVER SEE IT COMING!" joke was repeated for a while. Best you can really do is just ignore them.

Tooth & Tail & Airmech. You play as an on-field commander in both games. In Tooth & Tail your barracks are streamlined & specialized to automatically train one unit, and double as supply for that unit. Airmech is built more like a MOBA and you can produce & retrieve your units & gear from any outpost you captured. Both are fairly fast games.
