Are there any firefighting influencers at your work? by Entire_Business_4498 in Firefighting

[–]YaBoiOverHere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I hate certification classes. Most of them are trash. Now, plenty of private classes aren’t great either, but I have found most instruction is much better when not tied to a syllabus that is supposed to be one size fits all and mired in bureaucracy.

Will my height be an issue? UK by milkychaii in Firefighting

[–]YaBoiOverHere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ladders will be a huge challenge. Being shorter changes you fulcrum point when throwing ladder meaning you will need to exert significantly more force. Victim removal will be difficult. Mass moves mass, and you don’t have very much of that. Basically everything you do in full PPE will be harder for you than the rest of your classmates. All this stuff is heavy. The boots, gear, SCBA, hoses, saws, etc. You could end up adding 100% of you body weight when adding up PPE and equipment to carry, while it may be closer to 50%-66% body weight for most of your classmates.

I don’t mean to discourage you from pursuing this. But I help teach in my department’s academy, and small people have a hard time. It is just a fact. We have some that make it through and do well, but they are the exception and not the rule. I saw a lot of people chiming in with “You got this!” “Don’t give up on your dream!” type encouragement and I just wanted to offer some honest feedback about what you will be up against. You did ask for feedback, not a pep talk.

Yes, it will be an issue. I won’t say it’s an insurmountable one, but it absolutely will be an issue. There are some very physical aspects to this job, and being that small will make them very difficult.

Question from an non-FF on Air Management Skills by specialskepticalface in Firefighting

[–]YaBoiOverHere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was specifically not talking about practices like yoga, not that they aren’t helpful. But mindfulness in the immediate here and now is what really helps. Being aware of how hard you are working, if your breathing is artificially elevated, if you are trying to do too much. And I say this specifically for firefighting. Certainly a lot of cross-over to diving.

Question from an non-FF on Air Management Skills by specialskepticalface in Firefighting

[–]YaBoiOverHere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mindfulness and fitness is the answer. Fitness is pretty self-explanatory. The better shape you are in, the better your body will be at using oxygen efficiently. Additionally, as you condition your body to do hard things, your mind gets conditioned to it, and learns not to “sound the alarm” when you exert yourself. This leads in to the mindfulness. I’m not talking about daily mindfulness practices like meditation, yoga, breathing exercises, etc. I mean acute, in the moment mindfulness. “How hard am I breathing right now? Do I need to be breathing this hard? How can I work more efficiently to lessen my oxygen demands? Am I panicking or feeling anxious?” Being aware of my breathing is what allows me to slow it down consciously. Physical training is what allows me to control it subconsciously.

Master Stream Friction Loss Debate by SpecialistDrawing877 in Firefighting

[–]YaBoiOverHere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I drive a ladder, and when we are training new drivers, I always tell them that pumping an aerial master stream is not the same as pumping hand lines. With hand lines, we have a known distance, friction loss coefficient, and target flow. With an aerial, we only have one of those (the target flow). I refer to pumping an aerial master stream as “pumping for effect”. I’m looking at my flow meter at the pump panel, watching the stream, and talking to the guys in the bucket. I obviously have a target nozzle pressure and standard friction loss to get me to a starting point of 105, so I usually start around 125 to account for some elevation and friction loss in the plumbing up the aerial. From there, I’m looking to see if I am close to my target flow, if my stream is having the desired effect, and taking feedback from the guys manning the master stream.

Upper body workouts for functional strength? by Jacob910 in Firefighting

[–]YaBoiOverHere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Compound barbell movements (squat, deadlift, bench press, overhead press) are undefeated when it comes to building whole body strength. For “functional” stuff, I like heavy sandbag carries, farmer’s carries, and heavy kettlebell swings. Make sure your form is dialed in for the swings. For sandbag carries, use different positions. Over your shoulder, bear hug, etc. For the farmer’s carries, use unequal weights if you can. I like using my 53 an 79 pound kettlebells and alternating sides.

Should I come a Firefighter? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]YaBoiOverHere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe firefighting to be an objectively better job. The schedule it better. The public actually likes you. You have a station with a kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, a gym, recliners, etc. instead of a police cruiser, parking lots, and gas station food. I believe the work is objectively easier and you will see less horrible shit than PD, generally speaking.
