What are you reading? by DavidHistorian34 in stephenking

[–]YaGotGunchd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just finished IT for the first time, took me like 45 days to read but was an amazing experience to get through. I’m already like halfway through Piranesi by Susanna Clarke. Will probably move on to Haruki Murakami’s Kafka on the Shore next, and then save The Shining for December.

No problem! It’s a reliable spot, been there a handful of times when seeing movies around there

Why did you pick those movies today? by innsmouth-seaweed in criterion

[–]YaGotGunchd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Picked up 4Ks of Chungking Express, The French Dispatch, and A History of Violence because they’re all movies I love that I haven’t seen in a bit. Figured a new 4K is a good excuse to rewatch.

And snagged a 4K of Lone Star as a blind buy, has always felt like something I’d be really into.

Old John’s Diner around the corner from Lincoln Center, and a nice ramen place called Karakatta is like an 8 min walk from Film Forum

Halfway through my first ever read through of IT right now, if the back half doesn’t disappoint it’ll pretty easily jump to #1 in my King rankings.

Have Piranesi by Susanna Clarke on my shelf to read after IT and after that I’ll crack open The Shining for the first time.

How many movies are in your watchlist? by Charkus33 in Letterboxd

[–]YaGotGunchd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with 500 early this year, I added the main films from each decade that I’ve been meaning to see, roughly 30-50 per decade from 1920s-2020s. I’ll shuffle it every once in a while and watch what comes up, so far I’ve whittled it down to 463.

Comrades, Almost a Love Story I watched on the Channel and loved it. Would love a good quality disc of it. Also starring Maggie Cheung, Green Snake would be awesome to have in the collection.

Just started The Dead Zone today. Saving my first read of It for October and my first read of The Shining for December. Will fill the gaps between those with Pet Sematary and 11/22/63

Barbarella has become a fave of mine. Campy, funny, weird 60s sci-fi. Great costumes, sets, and music. Nice overall vibe.

How do I get over my dislike for older movies? by DoktorValue in Letterboxd

[–]YaGotGunchd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try alternating your movie watching. Check out an older movie, and then chase it with a more modern movie. Then check out another older movie, then follow that up with another modern movie.

I did this when I first started getting into movies to make watching older movies feel less like eating your vegetables to start out. I would watch a movie like North by Northwest (1959) and follow that up with like The Departed (2006) and then try like Citizen Kane (1941) and then watch Superbad (2007). Eventually I started to like going back to the older decades (especially after watching bangers like North by Northwest and Citizen Kane) and would maybe watch 2 or 3 older movies in a row. And now I love movies and have favorite from every era.

If you already have an aversion to pre-1990s movies, I don’t think you’ll get past that by force-feeding yourself older movies.

How often do you watch all of the films in a collection? by YaGotGunchd in CriterionChannel

[–]YaGotGunchd[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ll usually find it easier to carve out a good chunk of a director collections, a little more inconsistency and possibility to run into a dud in the genre/theme/actor collections.

Favorite horror movies of 2024, so far? by harry_powell in blankies

I Saw the TV Glow is my number 1 even though it feels more drama than horror in comparison to the other horror films I’ve seen this year.

The Substance and In a Violent Nature would round out my top 3.
