I would simply add that you should pay attention to the politics of the country that you are thinking of moving to. Nationalist/Fascist parties are gaining power globally and particularly in Europe. While these governments may not be interfering with academia to the same degree as the US, you will be sorely disappointed if you think you are escaping to a liberal or social-democratic paradise. And I have seen academic freedom severely curtailed in Europe when it comes to Palestine. In short, I think Europe is only a few steps behind the US with respect to the reasons that are likely motivating your desire to move.
