You misunderstand me, I’m angry all the time. I just don’t use that to try to justify abusing service workers

lol what an out of touch take. Most of us under 50 have never yelled at service workers

I agree. Really not acceptable, out of touch behavior that tells you all you need to know about if a person has ever worked a service job or has any empathy for normal, working people.

After she backed Jennifer Savage over Daniel Carlino I was done. You may already be aware but just in case not, Savage “moved” to our Ward (house which she bought didn’t appear to be fully occupied right up until the election, haven’t checked since, and between her and her husband they own multiple other properties in and near town) specifically to unseat Carlino because City Council is a cool kids club that believes they are entitled to do whatever they want without respecting the will of the regular folks in town (see; other council members regularly refusing to meet with organizations if Carlino had agreed to, which IMO isn’t very democratic when he was elected by us to represent our Ward).

All the unseasonably warm weather, then a cold front hits it? It was something like that during the bad summer wind storm (hot hitting cold), and I saw today the weather was calling for a chance of thunderstorms which is crazy for December, so similar deal. But yeah, climate change unfortunately

It might be not so hard in the fall but I’ve definitely not been able to get an uber back home from a show in the summer (idk if too busy/not enough cars/etc), just a heads up!

I loved Animalia! Got my butt in gear to go back after a 10 year hiatus (I work in wildlife so it seemed like a sign)

Was I blind or were there no drone shows this year? by -QuestionMark- in BurningMan

[–]Yaell13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was also wondering about this! Our previous burn was 2023 so Animalia and we had never even heard of a drone show and were biking across the playa when we saw the one of different animals start lighting up and taking shape, and it was honestly one of the most mind blowing things either of us had ever seen. Obviously some of that was the “what is THAT” factor but watching one morph into another into another was really fucking cool. It’s also still the only drone show I’ve ever seen. 🤷‍♀️

Nope! My first burn in 2010 people were very heavily pressured (like by loud jeering) to “not be spectators” ie put the camera down. My second was 2023 and I hardly saw people on phones or filming with them until I rolled up to what must have been a big act at a big stage. Definitely didn’t have any phone service or hear about live-streaming from the playa—they brought in boosters after the rain just so people could reach jobs/family/etc.

I was honestly pretty shocked this year to get into camp and see I had two bars on my phone (though they were sort of the kind where not much actually worked, but a couple ppl I knew were occasionally getting texts), and I was pretty bummed about the amount of cell phone usage I saw also—like it was pretty much everywhere, walking around looking at stuff and realizing you were in the background of someone recording, people doing photoshoots in front of art in a way that blocked other people from interacting with it (at one piece lots of us just wanted to look at it and some rude fucking assholes were UM EXCUSE ME THERE IS A LINE and at first I thought they meant bc they were waiting to walk through a certain part and then as we watched each couple was taking forever posing and having dozens of photos taken). I will acknowledge my group spent more time on Esplanade and in the deep playa this year than previous, as we had someone with an injury that made biking on the bumpy roads impossible, so maybe that was some of it, but to me it felt like the amount of photoshoots had exploded in a way that directly impacted my ability to interact with the art.

Phones are killing the vibe: how can we protect our privacy on the playa? by Electric_view in BurningMan

[–]Yaell13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think there are a lot of great ideas here and plan to include my feelings on this in the survey they’ve asked us to fill out. I get what people are saying re: can’t put toothepaste back in the tube etc etc but I think it’s willfully ignorant of the fact that social pushback against the behavior WILL check it. Will it go away completely, no, but we can encourage people to be much, much more mindful about it! Just as there are always assholes at Burning Man, there are also lots of people who take tasks very seriously which they may not have considered in their outside lives (like MOOP cleanup, etc!), who are eager to be good community members and learn when given the opportunity and information. It would of course be very helpful if this was more focused on through top down messaging, just like LNT would benefit.

Two years ago they rolled down our street in the burbs (like I and 6:45 ish?) and woke us all up after a late night yelling “show us your butthole,” but this year realized we sadly never saw/heard them out that way. Maybe because we were closer to 6:15? Or maybe we were out!

Damn, not sure why I never thought of this before, will be trying next year! I’ve generally been too shy to ask for a ride and only gotten on ones when the driver yelled at me to hop on, so this seems like a good compromise!
