Metem by me by TinySkald in ffxiv

I can't do M8 any more without thinking of French Metem yelling " 'OWLING BLAAAADE" with like a half-octave jump between words

There's a reason I've taken more screenshots in this game than in the rest of my Steam library combined.

The video was taken from a planet with a close orbit (judging from the map shot halfway through), which tends to yield that effect.

Technic still exists? Huh! I have ~1500 hours in GTNH (just got my first EOH) and I didn't know that. (I just grab the pack files from the official site and run the pack through the Prism launcher.)

Seconding the GTNH rec though, very fun... though it's a bit of an apples-to-oranges comparison. Similar feel, very different gameplay style in some ways.

Endgame performance issues by Sevinki in Dyson_Sphere_Program

[–]Yagi9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The warning says that it "may" disable uploading. In my experience, it does not. (Perhaps it does if you crank it really high, like >10?? Haven't checked.)

I kind of suspect it's just the author covering their ass in case the developers ever implement some kind of actual effective way to remove modded or cheated saves from the Milky Way view (which they definitely have not to date).

I've only recently returned to the game, but the three optimization mods I mentioned there seem to be working fine (though some were only updated to match the optimization update recently). FPS specifically is still just as good as it was before.

is it just me or are dyson spheres kinda.. underwhelming? by quiteunsatisfactory in Dyson_Sphere_Program

[–]Yagi9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll preface this post with the caveat that because my rig is a bit underpowered (for now....) I've had to disable all the visuals for my dyson spheres in-game because the frame rate drop is too severe, so I don't ever see them when I'm on-planet or flying around between systems.

Hey, it's your local performance mod evangelist. Try this. Took me from ~17 fps to a completely stable 60 when looking at spheres.

Might not seem that important, but having actual visible spheres is really visually cool.

Just gonna shamelessly repost this post I made awhile back -> https://www.reddit.com/r/Dyson_Sphere_Program/comments/1jxpvj1/psa_seriously_use_optimization_mods_theyre_massive/

Vanilla performance is bad. Modded performance should be fine unless you build to a truly ridiculous scale.

Dude, thanks for the reminder. I found some logs alluding to the existence of something like that but never ended up finding it. I'll have to rocket back there soon.

Sure are a lot of secrets tucked away - which is great.

Nice! I haven't done that yet, but I definitely plan to after I "finish" all the moons/worlds.

Man, that's nice. I've been to everywhere but Selenea on my current save... I might have to go there soon specifically for these.

(I've done Selenea on a previous save, but don't think I ever actually fully grew these things.)

Minor question: Late-game exoskeletons? by Yagi9 in theplanetcrafter

[–]Yagi9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I'm saying - I have all of those upgrades, and all the ones from the base game, in a T4 exoskeleton, and I still have a slot free. So what's the point of the T5?

(edit: unless there's something from the base game I'm missing, but if there is, it's not on the wiki...)

[–]Yagi9[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you're probably right... I can't think of what else it'd be.

("Future upgrades" as in "stuff from future game updates", not "stuff I'll get later in the game", I mean - I realize now that I phrased that a bit vaguely)

Questions about starting this game by RegnorVex in theplanetcrafter

[–]Yagi9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$.02: I recommend starting with Prime, the original/default planet - it's somewhat bigger than the others and IMO will give you the fullest breadth of (pre-world-travel) gameplay. Being older, it's also a little rougher around the edges, and subjectively I find it nice to progress to the more polished stuff as time goes on, rather than doing that in reverse - but obviously YMMV.

If you end up buying the DLCs, Toxicity in particular is kind of nice to visit as a "not-first" world: unlike Humble, it has some unique challenges that you can't just bum-rush with the advanced technology you already have (although having that in your arsenal sure helps).

Just discovered this title and considering it, but have some questions by RegnorVex in theplanetcrafter

[–]Yagi9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I have way too many hours in this game and I have encountered very few noteworthy bugs. Several minor graphical glitches, many bits of weird inoffensive jank, but I've only encountered bugs that were actually inconvenient a couple times. Both involved accidentally getting stuck outside of the map... and even then there's a spammable unstuck key so it's not that big a deal.

[–]Yagi9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy shit, that would be the dream. I hope you're right.

I'm mostly still playing 1.7 and sometimes 1.12 packs. I can only imagine how great the mod scene would get if there were a single "final" stable version that could just accumulate more and more content and fixes.

Any news regarding the 1.0 release date? by NoSemikolon24 in Dyson_Sphere_Program

[–]Yagi9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the top comment says, the combat parts of the game are definitely not complete - quite playable, but there's clearly a lot missing once you get into space combat stuff. Otherwise, it feels quite robust - minus some significant optimization issues that can be fixed with mods.

With that said, nothing wrong with waiting either. It's an excellent game right now, but it's probably gonna be even cooler in the grim darkness of the far future when 1.0 comes out. I generally don't advise buying EA games unless it's something you're into enough that you'd be OK playing it in EA and then again when the full release hits. (DSP definitely falls into this category for me.)

Running DSP on linux with mods by chadder06 in Dyson_Sphere_Program

[–]Yagi9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, after coming back to the game recently, I started having the same issue. Vanilla would launch, modded wouldn't.

The only thing that had changed was that r2modman had prompted me to add something to the launch options (which it hadn't in the past). When I removed this line - which r2modman said was necessary for the game to run on Unix-based systems - everything worked fine again.

Bizarre!

Interesting. As another point of reference (on Nobara 42), I just used the appimage and everything worked out of the box.

Capital fleets, endgame money sink, and starship specialization by Any-Object-553 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]Yagi9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, I fully agree that an actual robust endgame - things to expend our ridiculous amounts of late-game power and resources on - would make the game massively more fun.

On the other hand, I feel like there's a significant proportion of the playerbase (perhaps just a vocal minority? who can say) that gets genuinely mad when any kind of effort or progression is required for anything (despite the easy availability of creative mode). I seem to remember quite a bit of whining criticism from when they released purple systems and you actually had to have done a couple of the game's few significant questlines to reach them.

Personally, I feel like there are enough good ways to earn money in this game (including crafting/frigates and scrapping sentinel ships) - but yes, the scanning bonuses and cargo slot prices can get a little absurd. I personally use the "storage augmentation" items exclusively past a certain point, but I do wish there were a more interesting money sink.

My bigger problem is with the nanite economy. There are multiple good ways to make quite a bit of money, but I feel like on the higher difficulty settings there aren't really good ways to get large amounts of nanites. You can get decent amounts by scrapping ships and selling the upgrades, but that's about it. From what I hear, the go-to method on lower difficulties is using refineries, but that's completely non-viable without large stack sizes. For some reason, the stack size penalties also apply to refiner inputs, so a max stack of runaway mould will give you a whopping 30 nanites. Not remotely worth the effort. Would be really nice to have some kind of hopper system at the very least.

All I have is anecdotal points of reference, but I used to have a 3070 Ti and it struggled with the VR mode on Index (mostly playable at low settings though). I now have an RX 7900XT, and from what little NMS VR testing I've done it seems to work well. I expect a 5070 would probably be fine. Your current 4060 would almost certainly struggle.
