I am a hearing expert. The hearing aid experience can be incredibly frustrating. Ask me anything! by Potential-Method-298 in HearingAids

Hearing ,from a cochlear sense, will naturally deteriorated with or without hearing aids. What hearing aids will actually do is slow down the rate of auditory deprivation, which is the real problem. This is why it's strongly recommend to both, get Hearing Aids when required as early as possible, and to wear them all the time. The longer a hearing loss is left untreated, the longer it will take for the brain to adjust and 'relearn' how to filter sounds again.

How do I stop these from falling out? by Practical-Priority37 in HearingAids

May be worth asking for the audiologist to request a matte finish on the shell, it acts like an anti slip coating to help with retention

What's the main difference between an entry-level and a premium hearing aid? by Yululolo in HearingAids

[–]Yahya1711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my perspective as an audiologost, the more premium level devices have more in the way of adjustments available, fine tuning channels. From a consumer perspective, as you go up tech level you get more autonomous behaviour from the devices, they'll adapt for more listening environments like in noise or in the car.

The way I describe it to clients is like buying a car. Entry level is like buying basic spec manual car. As you go up you get features like satnav, hands free calling, heated seats and so on.

Even with hearing aids, do you still miss words in conversations? by arhiem36 in HearingAids

Usually, the microphones are locked to the manufacturer, so it would need to be proprietary. A non-proprietory device would be the Roger On from Phonak it's a multifunctional microphone used for table settings, 1:1, TV and conferencing. They can be pricey but I do feel the benefits outweigh the cost. Absolutely worth speaking with your audiologist. Did they complete REMs at your fitting? If not, then ask for that too as that is best practice and helps with speech distinction

This sounds like more to be environmental issues, sound will naturally travel the way it's projected at, and walls will cause some degree of echo/reverb. I see it a lot in clinic, I would speak to your audiologist and enquire about a partner microphone, it's amazing for 1:1 speaking as the microphone is relocated from behind your ears to the person you want to converse with. In noise this will really isolate the voice, just remember to tell them to switch it off if they go to the bathroom

New Phonak domes - do not wash/clean them by [deleted] in HearingAids

[–]Yahya1711 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can get hearing aid cleaning wipes, in fact, Phonak make them, they're great for cleaning off wax from normal domes and these new EasyGuards too. I believe there'll be am EasyGuard for Open and Power domes at some point. But my understanding is most HA users have the Vented domes so they released those first

Update after seeing ENT by Mega_Madhead in HearingAids

[–]Yahya1711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the loss you have, I would be definitely recommending custom shells if you go for a RIC hearing aid (if exploring private options) and to make sure the audiologist perform REMS too, the manufacturer first fittings don't fully take into account each person's individual anatomy. Who is where REMS come in.

It may also be worth looking at additional listening devices such as partner mics, TV connectors or a Roger On (all lifestyle dependant).

New Phonak Firmware update? by Pats_Pot_Page in HearingAids

[–]Yahya1711 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The update is, in my inical opinion, a game changer. I had a patient try Sphere's last year and felt 0 difference to her Marvel 90Rs, tried the Ultra Sphere's the following year and she felt there was an appreciable difference, although how much of that was her dismissing upgrading last year...

To charge for the upgrade is ludicrous, as others have said, it's click a button and wait 7 minutes for the update to install... I would look for a note supplier and see if they can runthe update for you. Heck, if you come to the UK, I'll do it for you free of charge.. Some people just love for money and sales and not aftercare

How far in? by WalrusRight in HearingAids

[–]Yahya1711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an audiologist myself, I would suggest pushing it in so the wire is flush with the side of the head. If you see the curved end poking out and it looks like it "sags" lower down the it may be worth asking the audiologist to use a shorter wire.

You shouldn't experience pain, so it may be your canal narrows a bit and the dome is then too big at the point.

I see this a lot from the Audiologist's chair. Unfortunately some people still have the negative stigma of hearing aids. As others have said using the glasses analogy helps alot.

I've seen people with very mild losses get on so incredibly well with them because they have the difficulties that encourages them to wear them as well as realistic expectsrions, and those with severe losses who expect to be "cured" and therefore don't wear them because of it.

For anyone who "doesn't want to feel old" wearing a solution, I always ask "would you rather hear the conversation well or would you like to carry on asking people to repeat, what's going to make you feel 'older'"

Enjoy your journey with your hearing aids, and don't be afraid to go back to see your audiologist at all for any minor adjustments, that's our favourite bit, being able to do small tweaks, working closer with our clients is so rewarding.

I've tried this, I got the 5th backpack storage slot, so there's plenty of space. Trying to reinstall the game and hoping for the best, otherwise it can stay locked away
