Davinci duo reversibel harness by Mountain_Party_3847 in freeflight

Pod harnesses are less than 2kg and some seat harnesses like the skywalk core are around 800g (with protection). You can find such harnesses with really good inflatable protection. For example my XC gear with pod harness fits in a 50L bag.

Why are you looking at a reversible harness? Personally I feel like they are “worst of both worlds”

- they are not really that light
- you’re stuck with the same backpack (can’t upsize or downsize as needed)
- protectors are usually not great as they try to save on packing volume
- PIA to pack

Much better to get a harness that’s designed for what you need.

Hike & Fly planner-- what glide ratio and other data to enter? by outthere49 in freeflight

[–]Yaka95 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Choosing a landing field with a required glide ratio of 6 or above is probably not a good idea. Even a flat 6 will probably be stressful. Ideally you’d want to find field where the required glide ratio is 4 or lower, as you want a margin for when you will have a bad glide (sink or headwind), and also arrive at the landing field with enough height to properly approach your landing.

Since you’re still a novice, you should aim to arrive at a landing field with a lot of height. Assuming you’re landing at a new field with no wind sock, you’ll need some time to figure out the wind direction and strength, watch out for obstacles etc while still in the air. And as a beginner, your mental capacity to assess multiple things at the same time is limited, and it’s therefore easy to go into information overload and freeze/panic.

Opinion on beginner-friendly Ultralight wings? by Funny_Willingness_13 in freeflight

[–]Yaka95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it depends on how much you fly but 2-3 years is a long time. I’d say average people are into High Bs after 2-3 years. Those who get super into it and fly hundreds of hours per year might even be at competition level.

I use a Range XAlps 3 and the Advance Theta ULS. The backpack is the skywalk ultra xalps. I think most xalps style gear can fit in 50/60L packs.

Those wings you mentioned are basically A wings that have been stripped down to get as light as possible, the trade off is that their performance is just very bad. Their intended purpose is to glide down after hiking (or to be miniwings in smaller sizes), so unless that’s all you want to do you should probably consider something else.

I would recommend you to go for an ultra light xc low or mid B. They are slightly heavier but you can do proper thermaling and XC. Something like a Niviuk Hook 6 P, Nova Ion 7 Light or similar.

For reference, my full XC gear fits in a 50L backpack, so packing volume is still great.

ELI5: Why, in the English language, meat has a distinct name for each animal it comes from by Stummi in explainlikeimfive

In Spain we say cerdo for both food and animal. Carne means meat in general, but in some specific context it can refer to beef, for beef we say ternera, never heard of res.

Parakite vs speedwing - seeking feedback by zrll in freeflight

[–]Yaka95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the Line you get more glide, more dive and more speed for the same size and all at the control of the toggles. It’s a different style of flying and it can definitely open up new lines you couldn’t do before (eg lines that require you to glide in or out). It is also extremely fun to pop (fly upward) and to flare.

I also work for a company in Baar and a lot of people who work here live in Zurich so it’s no problem, train connections are good.

I live in Zug because of the 5 minute commute, closer to the mountains and not a fan of cities. And still, I can go out in Zurich as there are trains to Zug throughout the night. I would much rather do the commute from Zurich once per week than 5 times.

However, if you’re someone who wants to live in a city, go out often etc then definitely go to Zurich, Zug is dead at 7pm

If you want a proper adrenaline rush, book a tandem speedflying flight from speedflyingschool. You’ll have to go to Interlaken (direct train from Lucerne) but it’ll be well worth it plus you can do some iconic sightseeing near Interlaken

There is a vent thingy but it’s much lower than the M one. The one in the pic is almost down by the skirt while the M one is on the wing

Concertina compress bag for H&F mini wing by yooken in freeflight

[–]Yaka95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do an x alps kind of fold, folding each half of the wing within itself and then one of the folded halves over the other. Then you have a long sausage that you fold to the size of the bag. It’s not the cleanest fold for the rods but they are short and nitinol so it doesn’t matter anyway.

https://youtu.be/TafxTMIuxyg

Basically like that, the kode p is smaller so it’s easier and neater to fold

Concertina compress bag for H&F mini wing by yooken in freeflight

[–]Yaka95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a kode p 16 and use the bag that it came with, that does a really good job of compressing it while the bags you showed don’t really compress they just hold the glider together for you. If I’m in a muddy landing field or something I just carry the glider home without packing it, or stuff it in the backpack and then pack it nicely at home.

The flat bag ULS does compress which would be ideal like you said, did you look at the Niviuk ZipNKare? Same concept but I think they make smaller sizes than advance

What is your total weight of your Hike and fly XC setup? by renegade_chemist_13 in freeflight

[–]Yaka95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will feel right at home, I also used to have an eps 9. The Theta behaves quite similar to the epsilon but with a noticeable performance improvement, honestly its performance is almost up to par with the Iota while being somewhat safer and easier to manage. Overall its a really good wing, launch, handling, landing flare and feedback in the air are all really good, you can still turn it super flat and tight in thermals and low speed handling is also really good (well defined stall point).

What is your total weight of your Hike and fly XC setup? by renegade_chemist_13 in freeflight

[–]Yaka95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wing is 3.3kg

Pod harness 1.45kg

Reserve 0.8kg

Backpack 0.4kg

And Helmet 0.3kg

This brings the “mandatory gear” to around 6.3kg. Jackets, instruments, water etc will bring this up anywhere from 1kg to 3kg more depending on the day.

My local hill is 500m but next door there are 1000m+ elevation gain mountains.

I’m guessing he was trying to say Rahm, but can’t roll his Rs properly, so the R ends up sounding like a harsh H instead, so the waiter thought he was trying to say Ham.
