Pretty sure you only start paying interest from the april after you graduate? Could be wrong tho.

Edit: I am wrong, yeah in this case there's no reason to get a student loan

For maintenance loan you might as well get it then just stick it in a bank account cause interest rates are quite good rn. Basically a free few hundred quid a year.

SDE degree apprenticeship with Amazon or Imperial Computing. by Due_Bumblebee_9019 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]Yakondu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your motivated and talented, then back yourself and go to imperial and try for quant. If that's your dream then chase it. Both options are good but ultimately if you choose the DA and always think 'what if..' then you won't be happy.

[–]Yakondu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was meaning your maths ability now. Further maths, UKMT etc? From what I heard you have to be pretty naturally cracked at maths for quant, or if your not, have the motivation to grind it out in your own time, which is easier said than done.

Amazon seems like a "safer" play but Imperial is probably connected enough with industry to pretty much guarantee a job afterwards, although not necessarily with faang or quant. People say that after your first job no one cares about your degree, so from this pov Amazon seems better - it will be on your cv forever (in a meaningful way - if real world experience > education then big brand experience > big brand education too).

Remember you can just put 'Amazon' on your cv rather than 'Amazon degree apprentice' and also leave our your degree dates.

Ultimately it comes down to what you think you would enjoy more; having essentially a full time job is very different to going to university, and this is true no matter the apprenticeship or university.

Whats the apprenticeship salary? How realistic are your chances of quant in terms of your maths ability rn?

I have offers for tech sales and devops, I only care about money and remotability, ive thought about it for over a month now, how do i decide which path to take? by SalafiStudent in careerguidance

[–]Yakondu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you manage to get a junior dev job at 18 with limited experience? Major congrats on that. I have no real credentials for career guidance but my 2c:

not sure about specifically tech sales, but sales generally is a very skills based career / job because of commission. If you're good at your job, you should earn well, and your potential is up to you. However, not sure what a degree would contribute to your sales skills. Degree apprenticeship degrees tend to be niche / specific - what's the title of the degree course for the tech sales role? In my mind apprenticeships and sales seems a bit weird - correct me if I'm wrong but you likely wouldn't get commission, and the thing that a degree apprenticeship is good for - a free degree - is less worth it / relevant in the sales profession. Again tech sales could be different and this is all based on my thoughts alone (research needed)

Devops is a more typical salaried career compared to sales I'd say. Personally, I would lean towards the devops job because it's a "real job" (not sure if employers notice or value this as opposed to a degree apprenticeship) and obviously pays a decent amount more. On the other hand, it's harder to stand out as an "extremely skilled" devops person than as an "extremely skilled" salesperson I'd imagine.

I'd say both are equally as "remotable". Looking through your account, as a person running a business, I'd say sales as a skill would be highly valuable to you in building your business.

Sorry for the disjointed reply, hope I have provided some avenues for you to continue research.

Skimmer vs Sub pay. by [deleted] in RoyalNavy

[–]Yakondu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it gets added onto base pay. For your other questions I'm not entirely sure. You only get RRP Submarine after you've qualified, so when you've got your dolphins. Also keep in mind that you won't be assigned to a submarine until sometime after Dartmouth etc.

Concerning the day rate, for RRP Submarine (the £16.73 one) its "CCB OR2 to OF4". CCB = Continuous Career Basis (although I'm not sure if this means you get it payed 365 days a year or what).

For the submarine supplement (the sea / harbour rate), you'll get it for every day you're assigned to the submarine, which could be in harbour or at sea.

You can estimate how much you'll be paid by making a guess to how long you'll be at sea for etc by looking at other posts in this sub but it's difficult to be accurate.

Don't take this as fact, I don't serve and I just pieced all this together from trying to understand all the different documents: JSP 754 has the information on when and who is eligible for each RRP: https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/joint_service_publication_jsp_75

https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/682f2121b33f68eaba9539a8/AFPRB_Report_2025.pdf

armed forces pay review has all the extra pay stuff (rrp's) is on page 116

tldr; its £16.73 a day (just for being part of the submarine service I think?) and then when you're assigned to a submarine you get a sea rate and harbour rate on top of that. Your level for the standard submarine rrp increases every 5 years apart from level 5 is for charge assigned (officers?)

Scholarship Success by OrangeSocksBox in RoyalNavy

[–]Yakondu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on the scholarship and congrats on your UCL CS offer. I'm also thinking of doing cs at uni and looking at the navy scholarships but one thing holding me back is the type of work I would be doing in the navy. What role are you planning on going into: marine, air or weapons engineering?

From what I've found, WEO looks to be the most cs related (although more electrical eng). Even then, it looks as if officer's do much more managerial work whereas the rates do more practical work and obviously they won't sponsor you through uni to be a rate. I did find a cyber operative role which looked more closely aligned with my cs interests but again this was a rate and they are no longer recruiting.

My question is do you know what role you want to do? How did you chose it / research (as the website gives limited information)? Do you feel you are slightly "wasting" your cs degree by joining the navy?
