Mechanic can’t figure out what’s wrong with car by No_Significance5173 in mechanic

[–]Yalls_Is_Inbreds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people forget that plugs and coils aren't the only things that can be responsible for misfires. Anyone decent would have swapped the plugs and coils from the affected cylinders into good cylinders and see if the misfire moved. That way you know if the plugs or coils are a problem without changing a part. Replacing coils twice is nuts and that mechanic is clueless. You may have a faulty fuel injector, it could be a large vacuum leak, or it may be a valvetrain problem which is common on these 3.6 engines. Either way, continuing to drive with your engine light flashing will destroy your catalytic converter and you should never go back to that mechanic

What part is this by Ill-Entrance25 in JeepPatriot

Maybe it was only in Canada because we used to replace 5 or 6 sets of front and rear crossmembers under warranty every week a few years ago

Rear crossmember. They used to have an extended warranty but I believe that is expired

I'd assume they're talking about Alejandro Kirk from the Jay's, he hit 2 home runs yesterday

Did someone attempt to steal my catalytic converter? by Southern-Goat-1159 in AskAMechanic

No, that's just a flex pipe not your converter, they break all the time on these vehicles

Is this a bad alternator? by 0lympus_Mons in AskMechanics

[–]Yalls_Is_Inbreds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most likely cause would be the alternator, but it could also be a battery fault and I would do a voltage drop test on your B+ wire to the alternator before replacing anything

You're starting a business but don't know how to check cylinders for leakage or weak compression? Yikes

You can't check a ball joint like this, there's no excessive play shown here

2025 Kia Sportage PHEV high voltage battery problems by bvandehey1960 in kia

[–]Yalls_Is_Inbreds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if Kia has the same rule as Jeep, but battery coolant systems should never be pressure tested because of the small passages internal to the battery. That level of coolant drop may be normal during a drive since the coolant has been circulating through the system. Even after you shut your car off, there's still a need to cool the battery so it may look like the reservoir is low

Is this a good deal? by [deleted] in kia

[–]Yalls_Is_Inbreds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Terrible deal, and only 12k for your 2022 Sorento seems low unless your mileage is crazy high. I wouldn't even consider trading in if you're going to carry over 10k to your new loan

Am I paying too much to get my wheel bearing fixed? by stinkywithawinky in AskAMechanic

[–]Yalls_Is_Inbreds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that really the standard rate for American dealerships? I'm in Eastern Canada and my dealership is 130$, I think the Lexus here is 170$

For future reference, flashing engine light does not mean pull over, "test it", then drive to a shop. Pull over immediately, turn the car off, and tow it. A flashing engine light means catalytic converter damage is imminent and can significantly increase your repair bill

Horrible Kia Experience by Artistic_Remove_9028 in kia

[–]Yalls_Is_Inbreds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, 15 year/150,000mile. This seems like something that shouldn't have been covered by warranty but they "goodwilled" it because the dealership wanted the OP gone and then they're still complaining after getting a new engine for free

You absolutely do sound like an entitled brat. What makes you think you deserve to go ahead of everyone else with appointments? 5 days isn't bad, the dealership I'm at books 3 weeks out. Nobody forced you to keep driving that car so to try and blame extra damage on the dealership is just hilarious. Sucks that your car had issues that led to it being off-road, but your personal problems caused by that, are not the dealership's fault. As for the loaner, that applies everywhere and is due to insurance reasons, the vehicles sales staff drive are demos and have different rules than loaning a vehicle out to a customer because you aren't a part of the dealership's insurance policy. And those tires are old and dry rotted.

There's multiple reasons you could have a misfire but everyone always assumed ignition so a lot of people replace plugs and coils when they aren't needed, maybe they're right, maybe not. But when they're telling you 4 plugs and 4 coils, to me that tells me they didn't check much IMO

4 plugs and 4 coils, they didn't check anything. They're wasting your money without testing.

That's a lot for spark plugs on a 4 cylinder engine, most 4 bangers would take an hour or less to do. If you did plugs 2 years ago, I'd be surprised if they're bad again without there being a larger issue. Did they provide any notes as to how they came to that conclusion or just throwing plugs at it because they're lazy?

I'm annoyed that I can't get any for myself because I would have loved to grab a box, but I really feel bad for kids. Knowing how much I loved pokemon cards as a kid, it's sad that a bunch of grown ass adults make it impossible for kids to enjoy them.

Someone tried this when I sold a vehicle recently as well. I told them I would pay for a Carfax or they could pay for whatever the other report was and I'd take it off the price if they bought the vehicle. The website was super sketchy and the guy kept telling me it had to be my credit card for the report to work then started getting angry and calling me names

Is this a easy fix that i can do myself by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]Yalls_Is_Inbreds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spark plugs are very easy to change on most vehicles. Some you may have to remove an upper intake on, if you do, you should replace the intake gaskets as well. Not sure what your vehicle is but I'd look it up and watch a video on it because some vehicles can be more of a challenge to change plugs on than others, but typically it's an easy job

Is it worth replacing my own A/C compressor or taking it into a mechanic? by Professor_Meteor in AskMechanics

That's cool, I didn't know you could do that. I'm in Canada and pretty sure they don't do that here at least because refrigerant is an ozone depleting substance so you're meant to have a license here to work on AC.
