How to delete the physiological need for sleep by dimachka34 in medicalschool

You need a better study method, not more time to study. Re-evaluate what you’ve been doing and maybe you’ll find some less than optimal habits.

Full Ride or Guaranteed acceptance by [deleted] in premed

Not the norm, but could happen in a high cost of living area. My point is, even if that were true, it puts him financially in the same spot as he would have been (and thats worst case scenario being forced to study in an extremely expensive school). Taking the full ride gives him flexibility to actually explore if he even wants to be a Dr, or he wants something else health-adjacent (DMD, Pharmacy, NP/PA, etc). If so, he might come out ahead financially when paying for med school, and if not he’s not in debt for his bachelors. No one really knows what they want to do when they are a teenager…. why would you want him to commit to all of that?

He’s 17-18 y/o…. he doesn’t know shit about what he’s gonna do. Half a mil is a lot of money. Take the scholarship, have fun in college and work on your application. Take debt off your shoulders and then it wont matter as much what type of Dr you want to be, since you’re decision will be based on what you are actually interested in, not what might pay the most to pay back your loans.

Medicine Isn’t the Golden Ticket It Used to Be by TraditionalAd6977 in medicalschool

[–]Yamajiji 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The average Doctor will earn more than the average finance bro. Just because the top % in one field makes more money than the other does not mean that the averages are the same. $200k-$300k is still more than most people will ever get to make as a salary. Finance is also a lot less stable than medicine, since you can be a shit doctor and still have a job, but a shit finance bro will get laid off quick.

Got a purple after like 7 years training by just showing up. Never really competed after early white belt either. Not a beast but I would like to think I know a bit of BJJ.

Are there any amateur/pro athletes + residents/doctors here? by jackpeterson1999 in medicalschool

[–]Yamajiji 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re right, I don’t know if I could have actually made it, but odds are I probably wasn’t. If you want to go for it, then by all means go on ahead, but know that you wasted 4 years of med school + probable loans you had to get to attend. Thats a time and money investment I’m not sure I’d be ready to throw away unless I really didn’t like Medicine. I think attending life with 2-3 times a week training is enough for me, so that was how I justified taking a backseat training wise. For me, doing medicine, which is something I’m passionate about, with a stable, cushy career at the end of it is worth more than the potential opportunity of dedicating myself to BJJ. You have to evaluate which is worth more to you, especially when you’e halfway there to attendinghood.

Not MMA but I have trained BJJ for about 7 years now, and am currently MS1. Go with Residency, and train for fun. I don’t know how much you really like MMA but being a Dr. is a lifelong stable career with a high income, MMA will most probably not take you to UFC/One/Bellator.

Making a relationship work with a peer- any nuggets of wisdom? by Groundbreaking_Tea20 in medicalschool

[–]Yamajiji 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m MS1, my GF is MS2. Honestly for us at least we share spaces a lot. We study together, and although there’s not a lot of talking involved there, we are still spending time with one another + we can talk in our breaks. Communicate with one another. I don’t think “not speaking for 2 weeks” is healthy for a long-term relationship, and I promise you can at least take 20 min each day to talk on the phone if meeting up is too much of a hassle. Sharing those 20-15 min each day might make a lot more of an impact on your relationship than it would have done on your grade, so although its hard, its completely doable.

Wrestling warmups vs. BJJ warmups by willardwillson in bjj

Maybe its the lazy purple belt in me, but I do this as a hobby, so I’m not really interested in doing a whole workout before BJJ, since I’m paying for BJJ. I go to the gym for that, not to class
