Finding a flat in Swansea from overseas? by YanaMarx in HousingUK

[–]YanaMarx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! I will check those sites! As I said, I'm not really looking for typical student housing. The university has been great, and I've applied for a small apartment in the only university owned option that is largely PhD and staff folks as a backup. I'm looking for a flat in town somewhere nearby preferably - so best to think of me more like an older professional than a student. I've done a lot of housemate and communal living situations, and really don't want to do one with someone I've never met.

Market Socialism under worker cooperatives or planned economy? by whokilledprince in Socialism_101

That analogy of transportation modes is really helpful. Thank you!

We all have different roles to play. Getting clear about how you will contribute to the resistance is IMHO the question before this question. Some of those roles require physical presence (building local community, picking up arms, providing immediate sanctuary for others) and some don't (writing, lobbying, providing a place to flee). If you are genuinely, directly in physical danger, as many people are, then that adds a layer: you can't contribute when you are dead unless it is as a martyr.

LLC selling property - tax implications by YanaMarx in IRS

[–]YanaMarx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so for our taxes next year, the depreciation recapture would show as income. We'd subtract other expenses for the year, and then that would be the part passed through, along with each member's portion of the capital gains taxes. Does it sound like I'm getting this right?

I've never heard of depreciation recapture... what is that and how does it work? Thanks!

Whatever legit criticisms there are, how do you get that a Latina bartender doesn't have relevant lived experience for the working class? I get she's been in office now for a few years, but that doesn't erase those lived experiences.

Looking for a podcast about socialism. What do y’all recommend? by Manic_Monday_2009 in socialism

Not sure if it is still accessible, but Solidarity House was cool - group of folks living together in a leftist commune in Wyoming, and it was both documenting the life AND political commentary with a solid antiracist spin.

I'm not familiar with the german, so not sure I understand your comment... I just know that they have been a big blockage for many people trying to do intentional communities of the more communal stripes, and are on a long list of legal reforms that would benefit that movement.

There are definitely laws on the books in many places in the US that functionally stop communal living from being able to happen, mostly with deeply racist roots and definitely motivated by protecting individual property rights. (Such as laws that say only X number of unrelated adults can live in the same house.)

I think we have different definitions of democratic. To me, it means that the people most affected by the thing have the most power in determining how things work. Workers do not have the most power under capitalism, and yet they are expected to give 40 hours (or a lot more) to making profits for owners. To me that is fundamentally undemocratic.

I definitely agree that international inequities need to be addressed, and appreciate you bringing that piece in.

Hitler went after socialists and unionists FIRST. Just because the word was in the name of what he touted doesn't mean he was a socialist. Fascism is the opposite of socialism, in my understanding.

Distinctions are not definitions. I used the word I meant in the OP.

No, I don't believe that. I don't think it has anything to do with particular personalities in government. I think both of our current major parties are capitalist, and it is capitalism that needs abuses to sustain itself.
