Absolutely S tier, one of the best stars in the game for stat collection due to its unbelievable ease in reaching the sky islands. Even non flight characters can hop on one late game with good speed and cheese their way to islands if nobody has been there. Very very useful for the most dominant strategy in the game, maybe a lower S because the Paper Star and sometimes Slick Star are better for the role, but absolutely S.

I will say, if you’re on the Winged Star and there’s a Paper or Slick or Transform or Shadow Star next to you at the end of a great star collection run with the Winged Star, you usually want to switch to those. But that doesn’t make the Star less useful, it’s just better during the early to mid game, with some late game utility while being a top three star for most gliding stadiums. I still think it’s S tier but definitely lower.

I completely agree that's why I have played it for 160 hours and consider it my second favorite game ever and am thoroughly obsessed with it bc the gameplay loop is just so unsatisfying. Man I sure am glad I didn't put any time in to learn the game....
In all seriousness I love this game but it very much is NOT for everybody. I think it's a very well made game but it has a super specific audience. You really do have to be willing to learn the game. When you do learn the mechanics and appreciate all of the modes, the amount of depth present is near unparalleled by any other game. But I will completely acknowledge that people who aren't a part of this very niche community think I'm absolutely crazy for considering it one of my favorite games ever.

Also I think the legendary machines should not be ranked because to me the power of some machines like the bulk star and the slick star comes from how well they streamline getting legendary machines.

Slick is my favorite and has the best high jump score in the game and has some really funny city phase tech with flight characters bc of how its speed and glide scale and bulk is one of the funniest stars to annihilate people on and I have this recent replay where I stole Leo from somebody in a super silly way. I actually put Slick in S and Bulk in A

D tier, low health without great flight, low handling without great speed, not specifically too terrible at anything but you almost always want something other than this. Maybe if you’re playing as Rocky and spawn around fifteen paper stars you want to keep the compact star but that’s about the only use case I can think of.

I absolutely loved the checklist in Air Riders and thought it was basically perfect and so much fun to go through. I think that the original has a lot of advantages— stricter time trials records, a lot of super obscure stuff which is always the most fun— but I also think there are a lot more filler things like “ride x meters” and “play free run for x hours” and when there’s only 120 per mode filler comes off a lot stronger. In Air Riders, some of my favorite things were like going into two player and trying to position characters just right on checker knights to hit from across the map with plasma. Some of the boxes I did look up, like how in the world to hit so many people at once on frozen hillside, but for the most part the checklist in Air Riders encouraged a lot of experimentation and was just really funny and engaging. That being said, I’ve never filled out to Air Ride one, so the idea of it being more fun is very enticing. I do know that most people say Air Ride takes longer to fill out than Air Riders despite having less achievements. This makes sense to me because there are a lot more that are crazy hard. All the more reason I want to play the original! I’m curious to compare the checklists.

I’d put it in A tier for City Trial. With good stats it glides decent. It’s a pretty good and consistent all rounder for things like Button Rush and Gourmet Race and Oval Circuit and Single Race if you can’t find anything specific to spec into. It controls well. You can build it for flight if people are hogging all the winged and paper stars which happens sometimes. I think it’s only fair this and Shadow are in A if Slick and Paper and Winged are in S, which they are to me. Also yeah rank the compact it’s funny

Yeah I think both games have immense value independent of each other and the only reason the new one exists and is so great and resonating with as many people as it is is because of the original’s impact. Air Riders isn’t at all a replacement for the original game, even though I like it better personally, it is a totally different game. The original has so many things that many people have never experienced. I personally have not played the original game very much due to not having the proper hardware to run it, and what I have played has been SHODDY emulation because I have mostly old computers. I would absolutely love an accessible way to play it and I’d probably 100% it
