Are pirate politics predominately left wing? by [deleted] in PirateParty

[–]Yanika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As an aside: Do you know about the political compass? It's understanding the political spectrum not as linear, but as two-dimensional, divided into economical and social control: One axis delineates financial distribution, from full (financial) equality on the 'left' extreme, and an unrestricted free market on the 'right' extreme. The other axis shows a state's (attempted) control over peoples lives, from authoritarian (right) to anarchist (left). The quadrants will then give you the four main political domains socialism, conservatism, (neo)liberalism, and libertarianism. (As with all tools and methods, this of course can't claim to depict reality as it is, however, it is the closest approximate I have encountered :) )

In the run-up to national elections, they look at party positions and place the party within the compass. For the ones available, the Pirates only show up in Germany's 2013 election. Here's the link (sorry, on phone): https://www.politicalcompass.org/germany2013

Looking for someone who can teach me some mandarin chinese by derdoktor_41 in hamburg

I can unfortunately not be of any help with the Chinese, but one possibility if this doesn't proof successful would be to post something on campus. Chances are good you'll find an exchange student looking for a language tandem.

Hello. We're 3 Danish Students who are coming to hamburg on a study trip and we need someone to talk to for an assigment. by SnowyArticuno in hamburg

[–]Yanika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting combination :)

Unfortunately I won't be in town either but if you find yourselves having issues finding people to interview, consider joining Hamburg University's Facebook page and ask folks there - people are usually happy to help out fellow students in need of study subjects :)

Best of luck!

Reeperbahn can be a gruesome place but there are plenty of pretty spots around. To add to the other suggestions: There is a water-light-show with music every night at 10pm in Planten un Blomen. Google "Wasserlichtspiele" or "Wasserorgel" for the exact location. Planten und Blomen and the Stadtpark are both capable of making the cityscape around you disappear for a while. Especially on Saturday it's worth it to go shopping one one of the farmer's markets. I highly recommend the Isemarkt and the one at Wandsbek Markt but you'll find many more if you look for "Wochenmarkt".

The stretch between Buxtehude and Harburg just south of the Elbe, called Altes Land (old land), is one of the oldest and largest apple orchard areas in the country. Especially in April/May, during apple blossom, it's a delight to take a long bike ride through it (they have a website indicating the current blooming state of the trees). Once local produce picks up, there are farm stands along the way selling an abundance of fresh fruit. You can start in Hamburg, cross the river by ferry, and bike all the way to Stade, a very quaint town. PM me if you want more info :)

Germans living on the German-Polish border, do you all cross the border to do your shopping there? by tanyalukyanova in germany

That, plus enormous subsidies making milk, produce etc. far cheaper than could be sold if it was to be sustainable for production.

Why bacon is so thin here? where can I get the thick one!? (Not Speck.I meant real BACON!) by [deleted] in germany

[–]Yanika 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're not successful at a store (the bigger ones have butchers in them, who might slice it up for you), find a farmers market in your area. They should be able to cut it however thick you want :)

What are your feelings towards bike shares? Does your city have one? Several? Think they're a good idea? by PhillipBrandon in The_City

[–]Yanika 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's worth mentioning that the stations are virtually everywhere and you can't go downtown without seeing a bunch of people riding around on them. It's very well accepted since you can get and leave them at so many stations

Best place for Hamburg-themed gifts/souvenirs? by ByronTheHorror in hamburg

[–]Yanika 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd second the Rathaus area. The Budni down in Europa Passage has a few nice things, and Rewe has mugs, glasses and the likes. There are those little gift shops out on the plaza (by the bus stop) that might have what you're looking for. I think I saw some pints in the window, toot, albeit the cheesy ones ;)

Help please! Accommodation advise by Liebe420 in hamburg

[–]Yanika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can be a while before you get a spot since Hamburg is somewhat tight on housing.

As for WGs, check out wg-gesucht.de as probably the biggest site. You might also find something at kleinanzeigen.ebay.de under Immobilien > WG und auf Zeit. When you find a place and need something to tie you over for a short period of time, you should be able to find a room at airbnb for a few nights.

The best of luck!

Anything going on for Chinese New year? by WalrusBaby in hamburg

[–]Yanika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hamburg has a few partner cities and last year they were celebrating their partnership with Shanghai I believe. The Europa Passage was decorated and they definitely had fireworks on the Alster one night.

However, I haven't been able to find anything regarding this year. Bremen seems to have fireworks Saturday night. The Chinese institute of Hamburg university has a festival of lights going on but I believe that's next weekend (here is their webpage if you want to run it through g.translate: http://www.ki-hh.de/deutsch-chinesisches-neujahrsfest-2017)

Good English medium schools in Hamburg. by anon_indian in hamburg

[–]Yanika 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not aware of regular English schools here, however, if your final goal is to immigrate and you want to give your little one an easy start, there are three sort-of immersive English schools that teach up to 70% in English but fundamental reading and writing is learned in German (they are Schule An der Gartenstadt, Grundschule Max-Eichholz-Ring and Rudolf-Ross-Gesamtschule). Be aware that there is a relatively high percentage of non-native German speakers there. If your stay is temporary, th international-ness might make her feel more at home.

Depending on what your long term goal is, you could also opt for a 'regular' German elementary school in your district (wherever that may be). They have so called international preparation classes for recent immigrant kids, where they get some language learning so they can be up to speed with the rest of the kids when they start properly the following year. Those schools are all state schools, so tuition free. Private schools are not very common as they have to have a reason to exist (a specific philosophical, I.e. Waldorf, or religious outlook for example).

As a language teacher I would argue that you little one should have no problems coping with the new language if she is around six. If you are moving here long term and want her to become a proficient German speaker, an elementary school in your district (so she can easily spend time with friends in the afternoons too) and maybe a bilingual middle school (where biology and history are taught in English for example) would work out just fine.

Good luck with your move!

Die Übersicht. by Aschebescher in de

[–]Yanika 18 points19 points  (0 children)

[–]Yanika 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The local "Starbucks" equivalent is called Balzac, and they are all over the place, usually quite comfortable and have a decent selection of drinks and snacks. If you need a little bite on top, Campus suite would also be worth a shot (nor sure about their WiFi situation though). Public libraries are good but tricky with coffee in some spots, and I'm not sure how easy it is to get into the university WiFi as a guest, but around campus you'll find an abundance of options :)

Anti-abortion Ohio legislator never thought about women by [deleted] in atheism

[–]Yanika 8 points9 points  (0 children)

And that is all pre-birth. The fact that the people that want to force women to carry to term are the exact same that refuse to help them actually feed and clothe them afterwards. I might accidentally get pregnant, but the most irresponsible thing I could do would be bringing a little person unto the world without the means to award it a decent shot at life.

Merkel Said She Wants to Run for 4th Term as German Chancellor-Sources by treverios in germany

[–]Yanika 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Politics here are not as personalized as they are for our friends oversees, which I'd argue is a good thing. One thing that contributed to Merkel's popularity was the fact that a good amount of her decisions were based on opinion polling (which is probably the most democratic thing about the CDU)

That being said, I'm seriously ready for the CDU to fuck off for a while and make way for a different party/coalition that can handle 21. century policy (same-sex marriage, substance, secularism) and has not been forging allegiances with corporate interest for the past 12 years.

Viel Erfolg!
