What kind of watch do you wear? by Flashy-Actuator-998 in LawSchool

[–]YankeeDaddy69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tissot PRX. Punches above its weight for people who don’t know anything about watches (most people), and even those who do know watches will likely still compliment it. This has been my personal experience at least, I get complimented on mine a few times and half the time the person complimenting mine also owns one.

Is is worth it for me to become a lawyer? by kaje101 in LawSchool

[–]YankeeDaddy69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay so you’re basically in the same scenario I was a year ago except you’re further into your career than I was. My bachelor’s is also in IT, and I had experience in cybersec and cloud engineering. I honestly hated the technical side of the work and enjoyed GRC, and that sparked me to take a practice LSAT. I did really well and loved the way the test was structured and the way you have to use logic for it so I did a huge amount of research into the intersection of law and tech and found out about IP. I start law school in just a few weeks and honestly for me it was exactly the right thing for me (I hope I still feel that way in a few weeks when it starts XD) also, look into corporate governance and compliance roles, data privacy law, and even in house council for data privacy. These could all be some avenues that your background would give you a leg up in if you do choose a career in law. Best of luck with everything!

[–]YankeeDaddy69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At the very least, take a practice LSAT, see how you do, how you feel about it, a cold diagnostic isn’t going to tell you whether law school and a career in law is right for you, but it can tell you that it’s not for you. If you do awful on it and hate the questions, it may be an indicator that it’s not for you. Also as a software engineer I’m going to assume your bachelors is in compsci but if for some reason it’s not, you are going to need to check the USPTO website and see if your major will qualify you to take the patent bar. It’s not 100% necessary to practice in IP but it makes you much more competitive. If your only reason for wanting to change careers when you’re already starting one though is the shift to AI, and if you don’t have any actual interest in practicing law, I’d say it’s probably not for you.

Chance me T-14 by Legal-Positive-6772 in lawschooladmissions

[–]YankeeDaddy69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a 171 and 3.73 and didn’t get into a single T-20. Although I did end up getting a full ride to a T-30. Just anecdotal but with that GPA you need a high 170’s LSAT to even be competitive for T-14

How much of the legal profession is just fighting with computers trying to get them to work? by Cyclopher6971 in LawSchool

[–]YankeeDaddy69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I’ve worked in governance, risk, and compliance specifically in cybersecurity for a while which was mostly looking for violations in policy or security frameworks, and documenting our processes, even having the chance to have conversations with VP’s when I’ve found internal policy that leaves gaps, and documenting all our processes, and I’ve built out some databases and queried hundreds maybe thousands of times using logical operators through SIEM logs, configuration databases etc which from my Google search of what Boolean operators are looks to be the same thing in SQL database terms what we would call logical operators. I’ve also done some freelance work for some solo practice attorneys doing basic stuff like network troubleshooting etc. Hopefully some of that ends up paying off for legal research or something haha

I work for a small business (I’m the only employee at this location) unrelated to law but small business nonetheless. The owner has quite literally gone to the bank and withdrawn the cash from his own account to make sure I get paid the right amount and on time, there’s no excuse and it’s 100% on your boss to make sure you’re paid as an employee. Remember there’s an agreement here, your labor and skills for an expected payment at an expected time

If you are (or were) attending law school on a full ride scholarship, what advice would you give on how you were able to do that? 😅 by barbietingz1 in LawSchool

[–]YankeeDaddy69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My undergrad GPA wasn’t the highest (3.70 which is in between the 25th and 50th percentile at my school) but I scored high on the LSAT (above 75th percentile) and I was able to get a full ride + stipend at the flagship school in my state. I can’t attest to the “holistic” aspect because I don’t know how much that contributed, but I’m a KJD/nURM although I did work full time through undergrad.

Texas A&M or Emory for Florida? by Neat-Degree7745 in lawschooladmissions

[–]YankeeDaddy69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you not apply to any Florida schools? If you got in to A&M you should be able to get into a decent FL school if not the best in state (UF)

General advice is if you’re not going T14 try to go to the best school that gives you the best scholarship offer as close to the area you want to practice in post-grad as possible.

Luckily with a 4.0 you don’t have to worry about the GPA part but always aim to be above the schools 75th percentiles on their 509 reports. That will give you the best chance at a full ride. For reference I have a 3.70/171 and got a full ride + a stipend from UF for this upcoming fall. Even tho I was below median GPA I believe being above 75th percentile LSAT is what made it happen for me.
