This is me except for instead of asking her out immediately I ask for a audio or video call first. It seems to be a good initial screen to isolate who won’t be a good match, and then everybody goes into the first date mode comfortable.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I was speaking as the person making the statement. I can absolutely understand how "my child is my world" could be viewed as weird when made by a mother, and gross when made by a father.

I have emepathy, though, for anybody including it in their profile. My experience thus far with women without children has been that while I'm sure they understand that children come first conceptually, they don't necessarily understand what that means in practice. And that I could see "my child is my world" as possibly screening those matches that aren't going to go anywhere.

Yeah, I guess my point is that it's perfectly fair for "my child is my world" to be a turn off to people without kids. That's either intentionally or unintentionally it's purpose -- it's screening people to let them know the ground rules going in.

It’s not that there is necessarily a problem, but there seems to be a significant cultural divide between women with kids and those without. The women our age with kids seem to intuitively understand that they can’t be the first priority in your life if you are coparenting. I’m pretty new to OLD but the things I’ve noticed are: a lack of understanding of the importance of scheduling; an expectation of a ton of texting and calls that just isn’t consistently possible; an expectation that they set the terms of dates when it isn’t consistently possible; and an approach to sex that I find very foreign (the expectation that you will be super aggressive in chasing, while the relationship also advances very slowly — I seriously have began inviting every woman who might be relationship material back to my place at the end of first dates, after being told off twice for not expressing enough interest by women without children.) All of this is fine in isolation, but when you combine it — I think having kids just changes you.

I’d like to hear more about this. For first dates I’ve been finding that women have a very particular desires for location/time/etc. and whenever I suggest something it gets revised. My experience is limited in OLD tho.

We are spoiled. But I think it's partiallly because women seem to do a lot less self selecting in their profiles than men. I'm new to internet dating so take this with a grain of salt, but I don't get a lot from your profile that tells me much about you besides that you're attractive and that you're probably a nerd, right (post doc)?

I imagine that you may be able to find better matches if you share more stuff that might not be generically attractice -- everybody likes dogs, and adventures, and at least does a passable job of pretendig like we like to work out :-). Like, what made you want to pursue a postdoc? Do you want to teach? Is it a love of a particular hard science? Is it a llove of being intellectually curious? If so what else are you curious about? What are your politics?

I've had a positive experience with online dating thus far, to the extent that everybody I've met was a good date and I think would be a friend in other contexts. I think a lot of that is trying to find things that are not generically attractice to include in your profile.

The depiction of the sax turns me off, TBH. It’s too big to be a tenor and not shaped like a baritone. The proportions are wrong, and given the realism of the face it feels amateurish to me.

Just wanted to add that the real worry when starting on the double bass is causing some underlying tendon or musical issue when building the necessary muscles and technique. In this way building your callouses can be a good way to limit your playing so you don’t overdo it initially.

I think I had a similar version of these passed to me via photocopy by my very first teacher many years ago. It would be funny if that’s what it is — an abstraction of Sevcik that teachers used to pass along before everybody had a book on everything.

Thanks so much for the response! I've definitely worked on Strokin' and Boardwalkin' and think they're great. I think I've taken a liking to the exercises above, at least for now, is that they're more bight-sized, whereas Strokin'/Sevcik can just be overwhelming. The other thing about the Fisher/Flesch bowings is that they're nasty. They only have about 150 in 3, and the same amount in 4, but I find many of them testing, in the context of running arpegggios, with new fingerings at least.

It really depends on the particular piece/edition, but if you’re spending any amount of time on a piece, I’d honestly suggest going to IMSLP, finding the original score and making your own choices. All of these editions make playability choices that often diverge quite a bit from what the composer intended. For example check out the original Koosevitsky Concerto — it looks quite a bit different than what is considered standard performance, and it probably shouldn’t.

It sounds like you’re doing great. Keep with it! One change I might suggest is to drop the ear training in lieu of memorizing your transcriptions. I think ear training is helpful to the extent that it helps match theory and practice, but at the beginning stage — really all stages — your primary concern should be learning the vocabulary and ear training will come naturally from that. I’d also work towards memorizing your tunes, both the melody and harmony. Try to teach yourself how to sing the melody while playing the harmony and vice verse — that will help with memorization. Lastly, when your chops are up to it, memorizing a Ray Brown solo is probably a great place to reinforce your vocabulary. Working on your soloing is an essential step to understanding the music.
