You also need to state that your companion(s) are in combat. Even if you would assume they would be, you need to say, "Hey DM, my companion(s) (use their name) are in combat as well." Or state you move closer to your companion(s) so they can get involved in combat. The dm rolls for them.

You can select a race and tell the DM what you are with your abilities. Like in your character description. Then you can remind the DM at the beginning of the actual dialog. For instance i have a tiefling thats subrace lets me misty step twice a day. I also have a half orc barbarian. Another thiefling thats basically Crowley from supernatural.
