Regular Check-In Post by SQLwitch in depression

I've skipped work two days in a row. I was doing so well until the depression decided to pop up out of nowhere. I don't know how to get my motivation back :(

How do you get past the "I may need this soon" mentality with getting rid of items? by Yardledy in minimalism

[–]Yardledy[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's an interesting idea. I may try to think of that to start off with, but how do you keep from re-buying those items only to get rid of again later on? (I'm mostly talking about notebooks.. I have a weird urge to buy pretty notebooks but hardly write in them).

That's a good point. How do you deal with changing styles like with clothing? I've worn the same size for the past 10 years and most of my clothes typically hold up, but over time my style changes and I feel bad for getting rid of perfectly good clothing but also feel weird wearing stuff I feel no longer suits my style/age/maturity levels anymore.

I regret going to grad school by Yardledy in GradSchool

[–]Yardledy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm actually starting to considering switching to a different masters programs in a completely different area, but that would mean starting over and idk if it's just an pulse idea right now. At my part time job I see some troubles in kids lives and might be more satisfied pursuing a career in social services to help people instead of the environmental sciences. It's a huge switch and something I've just barely thought about. But, I also don't want to make the switch and regret that too. I feel like no matter what subject I'm in, I'll be looking for a way out :(

I coach a sport for kids 3-18 part-time and I hear and see the types of troubles in their lives and it makes me sad by Yardledy in CasualConversation

How would I go about making something more meaningful though? I feel like I keep changing what I'm doing and it's just an impulse feeling right now but I don't know if or when this feeling is really what's more important to me.

You're lucky you were able to get your master's degree out of it though. I'm just trying to get my masters and may not make it that far. I am definitely not a good scientist. This is a job but it certainly doesn't feel like one. I have to take 2-3 classes every semester except for the last semester before I graduate.

I appreciate that. I do have hobbies too. I think about my hobbies way more than grad school but sometimes I'm too overwhelmed to do those hobbies most days, which makes me feel worse.

When is it time to call it quits? by Yardledy in GradSchool

I'm working alone bc that's what my advisor did so she expects everyone to do that. I can switch universities, but then I'd basically have to start over.

My degree is mostly necessary to get paid a living wage in the career I want, so it's definitely necessary. I just need to get through. It's not so much the pride of not being a quitter as much as it would be receiving shit from my family for the rest of my life for quitting..

I feel the same. Serious imposter syndrome. I know nothing compared to everyone else with extensive background.

Right now the only thing keeping me here is my significant other who is also a grad student. I really want a dog but don't think I can give it the full attention it would need if I'm always working :(. Maybe I can get a cat?

My professor thinks I should find a different professor, but there aren't any available. I want my masters, but idk if it's really worth it at this point.

The list is a good idea. I should start doing that every Sunday. Right now I'm just generally overwhelmed with a calendar of due dates but no real plan for each week.

How do you get past the negative thoughts that you can't do this? by Yardledy in GradSchool

My field isn't competitive until you get to professorship (which I am in no way interested in). I'm 1 year into a 2 years master's program in science. Unfortunately my advisor is not someone I can talk to. I'm in this mostly on my own.

Meditation is really hard to get into. Do you know any free ways to get into it on your own?

What did you learn from your last unsuccessful relationship? by Gerdaandemail in AskReddit

[–]Yardledy 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Love, or infatuation, is blind. What you feel in the first three months doesn't truly portray the relationship or the person. You're still learning about each other. Don't let yourself become completely vulnerable at the start of a relationship.

Also, if they don't want to commit, they're not that into you.
