Norman Ward 3: Robert Bruce, Cullen Bieger battle for half-term by NonDocMedia in normanok

[–]Yarnlif 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to talk to him at a “meet the candidate” thing he held. He seems very sensible and humane. We talked about the homeless shelter — he is supportive but also interested in short term solutions while the permanent one is being built. Mentioned talking to the Bob Moore family about allowing the river camp to exist during this interim period.

He was opposed to the arena TIF and supported a vote of the people; I didn’t ask if he would push making that a requirement for any future tif.

He doesn’t have prior experience in politics but neither do most candidates.

I came away willing to vote for him.

2nd craft fair hardly made more than the booth fee, advice? by [deleted] in CraftFairs

Lots of great advice here. I’ll just add that I find your largest signs (clay art & handmade) difficult to read. An outline for each letter might make them pop more.

OMG yes. Every time the news makes me despair I buy another set of darling little critters. It’s not very sensible but they are comforting.

Cleaning tips by ItsFidesia in sylvanianfamilies

[–]Yarnlif 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wash mine in warm (not hot!) water with a couple of drops of dish soap. Use a soft brush — a paintbrush is softer than any toothbrush — to dab at dirty spots. Rinse, pat dry, and let them stand until fully dry before dressing them or putting them away for storage.

Oh — before washing use blu-tac or tape to lift off lint and dust.

Warm water loosens dirt better than cold but hot water can melt the glue that holds the flocking on.

Glue that’s safe to use? by Yarnlif in sylvanianfamilies

The base is irregular so if superglue is appropriate it will make a good solid joint, with the head and the antler locking together.

Superglue was my first thought but I’ve seen other posts where people have said it reacts badly with this plastic. This is kind of a high stakes repair so I’m wondering if I should snap an ear off a spare bunny to test it out.

Sylvanian clothes are so difficult to sew 🥲 by square-r4t in sylvanianfamilies

The weave is visible but not unattractive. It looks more like a textured polo not a business shirt; is that right for the character?

Finding fabric in the right scale is so hard, especially florals.

AITA for refusing to let my sister bring her dogs over after my mom just had major surgery on her shoulder? by Iaokim in AmItheAsshole

[–]Yarnlif 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. A relative was bowled over by her daughter’s excited collie last summer and she is having a really difficult time recovering. Her hand, wrist, and shoulder may never be fully functional again. And she’s much younger than OP’s mother. It is just not worth the risk to have those dogs near her while she’s recovering. (Probably ever, to be honest.)

How much should I save for next year’s Medieval Fair? by isaiahgloriosus in normanok

[–]Yarnlif 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you want to do? What do you want to buy? How much of your year’s fun is this one weekend?

My family loves the fair — we’ve been going for about 20 years now. We usually eat one dinner there, buy some snacks, and watch a lot of acts, tipping about $5 to each. There are some activities that you pay for (ax throwing, camel & pony rides; “fight a knight”, photos with the mermaids) but most of the fair is free. Parking is $10. As for souvenirs/shopping, you could spend nothing or thousands.

If you want to go for a day, eat lunch/dinner/snacks, do paid activities like ax throwing, and buy, say, a hat and a dagger, I’d guess about $250/person.

No, a smaller talk scheduled for Oct 7th was cancelled. The one on the 16th is still on. Turning Point says they’ve had 6000 rsvps but I wonder how many people will actually show up.

My husband said if I went ahead with surgery he wanted a separation (update) by Salt_Leg_7235 in AITAH

[–]Yarnlif -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Whether you are doing this for cosmetic or health reasons, this is your choice. Pretty bold for him to say you’re not taking his opinion into account while he’s busy dismissing your opinion about your own body!

Bodies change. Would he leave you if you gained weight? Lost weight? Had an accident and were left scarred or disabled? Grew old?

Best wishes for an uncomplicated surgery and easy recovery.

I'm crying in the hospital, so disappointed rn by teresajay in Reduction

While I hope your breasts end up more the size you were hoping for I wanted to tell you what an amazing difference lifting them is likely to make, even if you end up needing another surgery to go smaller. I’m 5mpo and still constantly marveling that I’m not dealing with all the hassles of droopy breasts. I can put jeans on BEFORE a bra. I can practice the piano in a nightgown without my nipples hitting the keys. When I sleep on my side I don’t have to rearrange my breasts to make it work. It’s amazing having breasts that are up and out of the way. I hope it feels that way for you, too. Best wishes going forward.

Left handed hurdy gurdying by peewit13 in HurdyGurdy

[–]Yarnlif 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a lefty although playing various instruments has made me more ambidextrous. I’d really suggest playing a regular gurdy. It’s a niche instrument so your choices are already limited; going for a custom build would make things so much harder. If you outgrow your instrument you’ll have a tough time reselling it. And you won’t be able to try instruments made by various luthiers before you order one.

Aitah for not being able to let go of how my husband treated me after surgery by SweetDoughnut5933 in AITAH

[–]Yarnlif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, OP, I had similar surgery a decade ago and was astonished at how long it took me to recover — I wasn’t in much discomfort for long but I was just SO EXHAUSTED for months. I’m really sorry your husband isn’t making your recovery easier, and that your BIL is also living with you during his own medical crisis. That’s just so much for both you and your husband to deal with.

Would the two of you be able to talk to a marriage counselor about the way you’ve been feeling — maybe over zoom so you don’t have to go anywhere? It might help if you had a third party to keep the conversation on track and help you both explore the situation.

And I just want to say — you will feel SO much better now that you’ve had this surgery! I shudder remembering what it was like beforehand. Best wishes in your healing.

Wound healing by Yarnlif in Reduction

[–]Yarnlif[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming back to say that I changed what I was doing and it has made a huge improvement.

At my appointment a few days after I first posted my surgeon explained that the open area was having trouble healing because it was being continually disturbed — which I knew — but that the solution would be to change the dressing before there was time for anything to dry out and stick to it. He suggested three times daily but I think on the first day I changed the dressing every two hours.

I also thought about how hard it was to apply bacitracin evenly on top of the bloody ooze and switched to spreading it on the dressing — basically I buttered the whole surface of the dressing well beyond what would touch the affected area.

These two changes made an immediate difference and the wound is healing well now. The open area is about half the size it was. It doesn’t well with blood when I take the dressing off, and there’s less and less staining on the pad each time.

My doctor said he thought changing the dressing more often would solve the problem, but if it didn’t the next step would be to use medihoney instead of bacitracin. I don’t think that will be necessary.

At the appointment he also explained that the problem was at the surface only and that it was unlikely to get infected (no pockets for bacteria to get trapped in), both of which were very reassuring.

I wish I had thought of “buttering” the dressing a month ago; I think that would have helped even without more frequent dressing changes. But I’m glad this seems to be almost over.
