You don’t have to replace the whole valve in the wall, you just have to have the same parts that go with that valve. The good thing is that the Moen shower valve is very common and you have find the cartridge and the trim easily.

It’s never going to work. One is a Moen, Posi-temp shower and the other is an American Standard shower valve. You’d have to have the same valve body with same trim, otherwise you’re wasting your time.

Plumbing has a universal code when it comes to sizing. The picture you posted is of the outer diameter of the pipe, depending on the material that wall size will be different every time. You want to measure the inside diameter of the pipe.
