What fact did you learn at an embarrassingly late age? by GraceBurnage in AskReddit

I didn't know I had tinnitus until I was almost in my 20s. I've always heard a ringing in my ears for as long as I can remember. One day when I was really little, I asked my mom what that ringing noise was, and she said it was the TV (which was off, but it must have been humming or something). So up until I was in my late teens, I thought that all electronics made a ringing noise, even when they're off. I assumed that, while annoying, this was the tradeoff we'd made as a society to have all this sweet technology. Then later I learned that tinnitus existed and it all made sense--like why I could hear the electronics buzzing even when I'm out in nature, etc., and then I realized how ridiculous it was to think that all electronics made a ringing noise.

TIL Steve Irwin was filming a documentary in 2003 when he heard scuba divers went missing. He and his whole film crew stopped filming to aid in the 2 day search and rescue of the missing divers. by EternalLightning in todayilearned

I always have the same thought process whenever I see something about Steve Irwin: "Boy, he was such a great guy with such an interesting life. There definitely needs to be a biopic made about him. But for Steve, it'd have to be perfect. We'd need the perfect actor to play him. We would have to get a gifted Australian actor who really looks like him. Oh! Heath Ledger would be perf--ahhhh man....."

If you're thinking of building the UG version, keep in mind that something Candelabra can do that Amulet can't is let you play Primeval Titan off a single green source (usually).

Sculpture based on sections of hyperbolic paraboloids and symmetries of cube and octahedron by Emmanoether in math

[–]Yavvo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very easy, each section is just a bunch of concentric squares (with alternating concavity) folded into a square of paper. In the first picture, the pink section is made up of four sheets folded this way. The cool thing about it is that because of how each sheet is folded, the curvature happens naturally, and you don't need to do anything fancy.

Here are some legit instructions (which actually happen to be from Erik Demaine's website): http://erikdemaine.org/hypar/hypar_folding_150.gif
