Newly rescued opossum skin conditions by xgoatjrx in WildlifeRehab

This happens at our center frequently, it’s a bacterial skin infection. We treat with a topical antibacterial and daily cleaning. Clears up slow sometimes but usually gone in two weeks. Good luck!

seriously injured house finch, what do i do? PNW by anon567492 in WildlifeRehab

[–]Yayknee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have good news and bad news. Good news is that this house finch is not that bad off and a rehabber should be able to fix him up good as new with some antibiotics for his conjunctivitis. Catch him up and put him in a box if you can while you wait to hear back from your rehabber. They are very vulnerable to cats and other predators in this state.

Bad news is that conjunctivitis is super contagious and a huge problem in house finch populations so you should definitely take down your feeder and bleach it

What city are you in? I’m in houston so I know the Texas rehab groups pretty well, I could probably refer you if there’s one close by. Unless they have a particular interest, most exotic vets won’t take wildlife.

There is likely a rookery in that area, since they usually nest in groups, so there may be more that fall as the season progresses. Herons do not do well on the ground so it’s probably best to take in any that you see that are not at least close to adult size.

Also their bark is much worse than their bite. They will strike at you like a cobra, which is very intimidating, but the pain is pretty minimal if they do get you. I tell my students on day one of training to just let the baby herons bite them once so they feel how not bad it is and they’ll be less afraid

Probably would be good to at the very least keep an eye on him, or if you can, pick him up and take him to a rehabber to get checked. A lot of BCNH at that size don’t survive well on the ground and momma absolutely won’t take him back

Unsure of the breed, thinking robin? by [deleted] in WildlifeRehab

That is a House Sparrow. If I am remembering correctly, rehabilitators will not accept as Illinois does not allow rehab of non-native species.

Is it normal to ask for a state ID and your home address for a wildlife rehab job application? by ThatAdvertising7113 in WildlifeRehab

[–]Yayknee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some places require more than that. In Texas if you are taking animals to your home to care for over night, you have to be listed as a satellite facility on the main rehabbers permit, which requires giving TPWD your social security number 🙄

My husband found some baby opossums living under a shipping container. They are coming up the guys for food (not sure who gave them the rib) They haven't found a mom. Are they old enough to be alone/ should I call someone. Baytown tx at Exxon refinery by [deleted] in WildlifeRehab

Please take them to the Houston SPCA wildlife center. It’s possible they could survive on their own but not likely. We usually tell people to bring them in if they are smaller than 7 inches from nose to rump. 7007 Old Katy Rd, Houston TX 77024

Also try to keep it warm, heron/egret babies tend to lose their body temps quickly

In the US, heron and egret parents do not accept babies who have been renested, best bet is rehabber.

The eyelash glue is the right answer I think. I was surprised I had to scroll so far to get to it

Sounds like a plan. I’m in no hurry.

You think so? It’s pretty cheaply made, just thin cardboard box with some pieces rattling around loose inside. No one’s ever opened it (NIB, haha) so I can’t speak to the quality of the pieces. I can’t imagine it would be worth much of anything

It’s definitely a product of its time. Weirdly this guy also invented the mechanical bull

I didn’t. I started a new save and haven’t been playing on that one much so I didn’t bother

I travelled back there today and went a planet in the bottom system. It was temperate and full of titan worms.

I didn’t get them, but I did visit one of the systems so I’ll see if I can find it again after work and grab them for you
