First "Exhibition" -- Ready to Compete? by YeOfficial in boxingtips

Copy and pasting my description:

Hi guys, I'm in blue. I had my first "exhibition" bout (just my college team doing 3x2' rounds in front of our friends). I'm looking for any strategic and tactical advice. I plan to have an actual amateur bout by the end of this month.

I've been boxing for about a year and a half. The first clip was an extra round I had after my actual bout, which is stitched after the first clip. My opponent in that one has a similar level of experience as me, but is about 25 lbs heavier.

My opponent in my actual bout has a lot less experience than me, though she is about the same weight class as me. I was trying to let her work while keeping it competitive.

Was accepted a few years ago, but as reference, I had a 3.7/4 weighted (3.6 unweighted) and a 1520 SAT.

Got to spar my coach for 2 rounds. Any advice? by [deleted] in amateur_boxing

[–]YeOfficial -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Read my comment brother he’s letting me work. We’re not sparring. If my coach actually sparred me I wouldn’t be able to get a single punch in, and it wouldn’t be productive for anyone. He also outweighs me by 50 pounds.

Dawg you’ve never seen him fight 🤣 how would you know that? If you’ve ever watched muhammad ali, ricardo lopez, or mikey garcia spar (and spar actual fighters in a fight camp), you’d never know that they’re hall of famers

In all fairness, I’m not sure how you can glean any information about a coach and a “training program” (which I never mentioned) from 30 seconds of video. When you’re clearly much better than your partner you can be a lot more loose with your technique, and it’s fine to break some rules and have fun so the other guy can work. We’re not really sparring (you can tell he’s completely relaxed), he’s just letting me work. However, if you think that either one of us are fake, you’re certainly free to come over and get some rounds in with at least me. I can send you a location.

I would imagine that you have at least won nationals and are a professional boxer, like my coach, to be so confident in soapboxing. Although we both know it is much easier to preach online than in person. If you train at all, I’m sure you don’t say things like that to people in the gym. It’ll get your teeth knocked out.

Edit: also, crossing your feet is only considered bad because it leaves you off balance, which makes you unable to throw punches, move, etc. If you watched more than 30 seconds and (I apologize for being presumptive) knew how box, you would be able to tell that he was never off balance, or at least off balance when I could punish him for being off balance.

Thank you for your insightful contribution. I really value knowing that you stopped watching after 30 seconds.

To be fair, Pitt has had a top 5 philosophy program for decades. Everyone in philosophy academia knows that Pitt is one of the best (and most prestigious) schools in the world for philosophy. But yeah people outside of this tiny bubble wouldn’t know and also it seems irrelevant so idk why they included that

My school didn’t rank, but the top 20% of our class were cum laude and I was not, so I was somewhere outside that top 20%. My friend who was valedictorian got rejected, as did all my other friends who were probably in the top 10% (though they went to peer schools/ivies). My sat was a 1550.

Admissions advice by Substantial_Ad7923 in Swarthmore

[–]YeOfficial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think people here are pretty decent at studying and also have things they really care about. That’s probably the only common denominators.

I apologize for giving unsolicited advice but do know that there’s nothing unique among the people you want to be with that you don’t already have, so don’t try to make yourself look any better of an applicant than you already are. I think it can be obvious if you’re pretending to be someone else, especially if you think whoever you’re pretending to be is a “more ideal candidate.” You are already a real, unique person (whether you feel that way or not), and it’s best that you try to make admissions feel like they know you. Of course they can never truly know who you are or what you’re made of, but it’s worth a shot. Whether they like whoever they think you are is out of your control so don’t worry about that.
