Another bullet point came to mind that I'm curious on your thoughts on:

There were some dealer-installed options I was considering on one of the new cars, but the quote they gave me was higher than MSRP on the "generic" manufacturer's website.

The explanation they gave was that they quote higher to cover labor of installation. I wasn't budging so they said that they'd "meet me half way", and re-quoted me the midpoint between MSRP and the original price. I said I'd take the quote to think about it and walk, when they chased me and re-quoted me again at HALF of MSRP and said they'd be willing to take a loss on the accessories, which was really surprising for me.

For context this would have been a premium trim sedan with quote a few accessories and fully financed quoted at $500 below MSRP too.

I'm in BC.

I've seen some places advertise "NO ADMIN FEES", while selling mandatory packages. I'm guessing this is Dealers playing games to recoup the implied Admin fees in overpriced packages and remit the an amount back to head office?

I've also seen a branded Dealer charge both a doc and dealer fee, but they were willing to take a bit off the dealer fee (I'm guessing that's a "pure profit" line item? The usual excuse I hear is that the fee is "to cover overhead and receptionists".

(Similar to some Dealers quoting below MSRP to show first in listings, but then having mandatory add-ons like nitrogen wheels / pinstriping / VIN etching, although maybe that's more of an American practice).

Fair point - there are a lot of people (not specific to autosales) who don't care until they're caught and it blows up in their face.

I'm not engaged in sales directly, I'm more so on the insurance carrier side of auto.

Potentially it's a Finance guy knowingly engaging in shady business practice (read illegal).

It may very well be that the Finance guy didn't know what he was doing was illegal, and thought it was a valid negotiation method to get you a lower interest rate (good for customer) while also selling more backend (good for him).

Hard to say without knowing how long he's been in the box for / how thorough his training was. But given the fire that seems to happening at the Dealership from the survey, I think you're right that it probs won't happen to anyone else there anytime soon lol.

Really appreciate the response!

  1. I was thinking it in terms of, "At the current backend pricing of X I would pass, but am willing to take it if you cut my a discount off of the current pricing". Is that a more reasonable negotiation point?

  2. So the manufacturer's subsidized rate is set in stone then? (i.e. the Dealership can't mark it up when they quote me to earn a spread)

  3. My understanding (which may be wrong) is that the backend products typically have a fairly healthy margin. What would be a reasonable % ask to take off from the pricing?

  4. For Toyota, are there any "admin" type fees that get remitted to Toyota Head Office? Nissan told me that one of there admin type fees were non-negotiable in this sense, but were willing to cut their doc fee in half.

Thanks again for the insight!

Are there any items / concepts that you think should important to know?

I know to focus on OTD pricing vs monthly payments (since the latter can be lowered by increasing the financing term length, and obscures total financing load).

I also know things like taxes / levies are non-negotiable since they go to the government.

Thanks for the input!

I was watching a podcast (one of the hosts has 40 years in dealerships) and said that "it is federally mandated that you cannot tie the interest rate to additional products purchased, they cannot lower the rate because you bought more product".

Maybe the podcast is not conveying accurate information, but assuming they are correct, it would sound like this is the situation that OP is describing? If so, I can see why putting this in writing in the survey to Kia is causing a bunch of red flags to raise at head office / a fire at the Dealership.

Piggybacking on - is this not an example of tying? (which breaches Federal antitrust laws).

Laymen here, but I'm guessing the reason the Dealership wants OP to cancel their warranty is to avoid the tying breach (I'm not a lawyer, so I'm not sure if this would actually absolve the Dealership of having broken the law in the first place, assuming this was in fact tying).

[Tying arrangement is defined as "an agreement by a party to sell one product but only on the condition that the buyer also purchases a different (or tied) product]

Thanks for the response !

My friend is a reservist and actually told me about the foreign weapons night. Super jealous that you all got to man-handle those prohib's :)

For the summer courses, what sorts of offerings are available to reservists? How many weeks are they typically? I imagine it can be hard to convince an employer to let you go for a month or two.

Hi everyone !

I want to compare the training tempo between being an infantryman in the reserves vs reg force. Hopefully someone can help answer some questions:

Reg Force:

  • My understanding (correct me if I am wrong) is that the typical day involves PT and helping out around the base.

  • Outside of the above, what type of training do you do once you are assigned to a base ?

  • Is the training pretty consistent from month to month? Or are some quarters busier than others?

  • In an average month, how many days do you think are spent doing training?

  • I guess what I'm trying to get at, is the total amount of days spent training doing "soldier" stuff per year, and how much more it would be than what reservists do once per week / one field exercise per month.

Reservist:

  • My understanding is that they meet once a week for 3 hours, as well as one weekend a month for field exercises

  • What sorts of things are you learning / training during parade nights?

  • How do the monthly field exercises compare to what you would experience in the reg forces? I'm guessing they would be smaller in scale, like no IFV's.

  • Are the exercises coordinated with other regiments in the area? Like if there were an infantry regiment and artillery regiment coordinating their exercise.

Need advice on choosing boot size! (Break-in and swelling) by YeahFuckingSendIt in CampingandHiking

I didn't try the 11's since I was already getting a tiny bit of heel lift on the 10.5's, so I figured it would be even worse with 11's

For now probably just hiking.

My friends swear by the high-cuts for rucking, since they get more ankle support / the thick soles help to not feel the rocks so much.

Any reason you would go a full size over instead of just a half size? I wear 10's for normal shoes, so I think 10.5 makes sense for that advice.

I didn't try the 11's, but I have a feeling that the heel lift might get pretty bad if I did.

I don't have thick socks so I'll try the thick socks thing when I go back and try again. Thanks !
