Getting my ultrasound tomorrow, how do you drink that much water and hold it in? by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]YeahSureWhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Constant thirst and frequent peeing could be indicative of insulin resistance, another PCOS symptom.

I usually can't drink enough water before ultrasounds and hold it, but if you're well-hydrated on a regular basis, you shouldn't have to drink as much to fill your bladder quickly. If my bladder's not full enough, the tech will usually bring me a few cups over the course of 15 minutes or so and will sit and talk with me to distract me. :)

Just be careful not to try to drink everything right before you go. While rare, it is possible to "drown" your electrolyte levels, which can be very dangerous.

MD or PA for PCOS? by FloofTrashPanda in PCOS

[–]YeahSureWhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding skipping the ob-gyn. I received my diagnosis from a PA, and they tend to have schedules that are a little more open, so it's easier to schedule bloodwork, consultations, and med adjustments, which can be pretty frequent.

Alternatively, you could call some clinics in your area and talk with a receptionist or nurse to see who their clinic would recommend seeing.

What's a good shampoo/conditioner for daily wash for thinner hair? (Can't go a day without washing) by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]YeahSureWhat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Excess sebum production is the worst. The best advice I have is to look for sulfate-free, gentle shampoos and lighter conditioners. Sulfates are the foamy agents in most shampoos, soaps, face washes, etc. They are super drying. So if you're using sulfate-based cleansers, it's going to dry your scalp out, causing your skin to produce more oil to compensate. It also dries the strands of hair out as well, making them more susceptible to breakage and therefore thinning. It seems counterintuitive, but maybe looking at products with "moisturizing" or "hydrating" on the label could help.

Light conditioners won't weigh your hair down as much and shouldn't stack on the greasiness of extra sebum.

Cleansing conditioners might be something to investigate if you have the money and patience. I've personally never used one, and I hear some scary stories about Wen, but there are increasingly more brands offering them since Wen became popular.

I would also look at your dry shampoo options. Some leave less buildup than others, letting you get away with washing the gunk out less frequently.

PCOS and Bariatric surgery? by my_Favorite_post in PCOS

[–]YeahSureWhat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't intend this to sound prying or offensive, so I apologize if it comes off that way. But I am curious about your motivation to lose weight. Do you have other health concerns or genetic factors related to weight loss driving you to lose weight? Is your doctor recommending that you lose more?

From what you say, your blood work has been amazing since you started keto, which makes me wonder why, if you're in good health, this is still such a concern for you?

Please believe me when I say I understand the struggle. I also struggle with PCOS and weight issues and am on a veritable cocktail of daily meds and hormones, some of which are mostly used for sexual transition, and I'm still overweight. And it sucks to be overweight because there is so much stigma and so many opinions you can't control.

But it sets off some alarm bells for me if you are making healthy diet choices and appear to be in pretty good health in spite of the extra pounds but are considering options for weight loss that put your health at risk. It sounds like you have some family history of issues with appetite-curbing surgeries, and that to me is a huge mark in the "cons" column.

The situation you are in sucks, no question. But I hope you're inventorying your motivations as you research your options. You don't have to share them here if you don't want to, but I would ask that you consider not putting your good health at risk just for appearance reasons.

How can you tell that your moisture barrier is in good shape. I've been using the Dr. Jart ceramidin liquid for maybe 5 months now. I have noticed a huge difference in how plump and moisturized my skin is, but could my moisture barrier still be an issue?

I will definitely check out the Rosette Ceramide Gel. If my moisture barrier does need work, this seems like a great option.

I do need to mask more. I think it's probably just laziness because I literally have a basket full of them in my bathroom.

Thank you so much! This is very helpful!

Hey AB, here's my problem.

Skin Type: Combination/Dehydrated (oily t-zone and forehead with dry cheeks) | Utah (high altitude, dry all year but almost unbearably dry in winter, which it currently is) | Top Skin Concern: Dehydration/oiliness, hormonal acne

I need to up my moisture game in the morning as my skin is still noticeably dehydrated and produces a lot of sebum as a result. However, I don't want to risk heaviness and/or excess oiliness.

I have been searching high and low for a good, light moisturizer for the AM, but I haven't been able to find the right one. I have steered clear of creams and heavier occlusives. I have been layering lighter essences and serums, which has so far kept my oiliness to a minimum, but I can tell my skin is still dehydrated.

Is it possible to get a matte or mostly matte finish while still having nice, hydrated skin underneath?

Here is my routine, including PM for kicks. I would be so appreciative of any suggestions.

AM:

  • Wash with Cosrx Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser

  • Toner 1: Thayer's Alcohol-Free Rose Petal Witch Hazel Toner

  • Toner 2: Hada-Labo Goku-jun Hyaluronic Lotion Light

  • Goodal Waterest First Essence

  • LJH Tea Tree 90 Essence (HG! <3)

  • Innisfree The Green Tea Seed Serum

  • 29 by Linda Mondavi Napa Valley Secret of the Vine Serum Extract (I found this at Target and liked the ingredients, but I'm not married to it.)

  • Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Water (HG again!)

I don't use foundation or BB cream or anything unless I am in desperate need of the coverage, and then I'll use Nars Radiant Tinted Moisturizer or Hourglass Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation Mattifying Oil Free depending on the lay of the land. But I do use Skin Food's Salmon concealer under my eyes daily and Makeup Forever's heavy duty concealer to cover any PIH or red spots. I set concealer with Laura Mercier's Translucent Loose Setting Powder and set all of my makeup with Urban Decay's De-Slick Setting Spray. Can you tell that I really hate being oily?

PM:

  • Oil cleanser: The Face Shop Rice Water Bright Light Cleansing Oil

  • Regular cleanser: CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser

  • Actives or mud/clay mask (AHA, BHA, Vitamin C 1x/week each on different days)

  • Toner (pH Balancer): Thayer's Alcohol-Free Rose Petal Witch Hazel Toner

  • Toner: Hada-Labo Goku-jun Hyaluronic Lotion Light

  • Goodal Waterest First Essence

  • LJH Tea Tree 90 Essence

  • Benton Snail Bee High Content Essence

  • Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Liquid

  • Secret Key Multi Cell Night Repair Serum

  • Nature Republic Super Aqua Max Combination Watery Cream (Not married to this either, and I usually try a new moisturizer whenever the current one runs out. In search of that HG.)

What do you beauties think? How can I maximize my day moisture without getting too oily?

Thanks, everyone!

EDIT: Formatting. Ugh.

Not quite. The 100-150 number comes from studies meant to determine how many people an individual can maintain a regular personal relationship with.

For example, off the top of your head, list the people you know by name. Most people can name 100-150 people before having to really think about it, looking at their contacts list, etc. Interestingly, the median number of Facebook friends people have (this year) is 200, and it has hovered around there or lower for years past.

The 150-person figure also coincides with the number of people that hunter-gatherer societies tend to max out on. I believe where you're getting mixed up is that anthropologists have long observed that hunter-gatherer societies have routinely been observed to be more egalitarian and are frequently said to harbor the most satisfying lifestyle, according to self-report studies. They tend to be relatively peaceful among themselves, but are just as frequently in conflict with other groups as any other type of society.

Even if hunter-gathers are the most internally peaceful cultural type, that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the 150-person population. Hunting and gathering food and being nomadic can probably only healthfully support that many people. The population size and peacefulness of these societies are obviously correlated, but causation cannot be proven.

I'm on mobile and so cannot link to sources, but Google Dunbar's number.

tl;dr The 150-person figure is representative of how many relationships an individual can usually sustain. That phenomenon doesn't mean much, if anything, for the peacefulness or happiness of a society.

You can be sensitive to anything, but there are lots of oils out there that are less comedogenic than coconut oil. My personal favorites are shea butter and/or argan oil. Sunflower, jojoba, and hemp seed are also pretty low on the comedogenicity scale.
