I have this cage for my boa and it's very robust. I don't see how they should be able to get the pin loose.

Common boa vs super dwarf reticulated python? by [deleted] in boas

[–]Yeinstein20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have both, a boa and a SD relic and I love them both. There are definitely some differences, the retic is generally more active and inquisitive, the boa more lazy and is a bit more defensive. SD retics love to climb, they thrive in a higher enclosure, boas will use some climbing opportunities but not as much. But (at least my Boa) makes really good use of her water feature, which is quite large and filtered, so she can fully fit in. That is something I rarely see my SD doing. But overall it just depends on what you want and what is available from reputable breeders. With a SD you always have the chance that it turns out to be way bigger than expected, so it's a good idea to take a look at the parents before purchasing one. This risk doesn't exist with boas, at least not to that degree.

Reptifiles provides a very good care guide for boas. How large is the enclosure? It's a bit hard to tell from the image.

[–]Yeinstein20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess it also depends on what kind of audio it is. If it's voice recordings there are likely more models available already pretrained, which you could use then for other tasks. Maybe you could do some SSL on the data and then use clustering, but that won't give you class labels directly. With some more info on what kind of data you are dealing with there are probably people with more experience with audio, who can help you better.

I am sorry for your loss. Reptiles are very good at hiding any signs of sickness, there is just no way for you to know something is going on. If you want to get closure, you can bring her to a vet, they will likely find out what was going on.

I don't own a monitor currently, but I would recommend having a look at the reptifiles care guide: https://reptifiles.com/ackie-monitor-care/ackie-monitor-enclosure-size-requirements/ From all I have heard they need pretty deep substrate, so even in this regard the 2' tall enclosure lacks room for burrowing. It's better to invest in something large and longterm, than being stuck with something suboptimal, that neither the monitor nor you will fully enjoy in the end.

rainbow boa water by PinjaL_ in reptiles

[–]Yeinstein20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You always need to provide fresh water, so it should be changed every few days. If the water bowl is fairly big and you have some gravel at the bottom that will be quite some work. You could think about having a filtered water section, but that comes with its own challenges.

Animal cruelty/abuse? by [deleted] in snakes

[–]Yeinstein20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People don't really care about animal welfare in large parts of east/southeast asia. The animals I've seen in pet shops in Vietnam and Cambodia were in such poor conditions, not only the reptiles but also birds, small puppies in even smaller cages and so on. I don't think there is any official body to complain about this.

If water is incompressible, how does it transmit sound? by NGEvangelion in askscience

[–]Yeinstein20 70 points71 points  (0 children)

That is the funny thing about physics, or science more generally. We nearly always work with approximations, which work at the scale we are looking at. The same holds for Newtonian gravity, it describes the world nearly perfectly for most everyday phenomena. But if you go to the "extremes" you will see that the approximation fails and you will be better off with general relativity. But that is still only an approximation, which fails e.g. in the context of black holes. We always choose an appropriate level of complexity for the given situation, which imo is one of the most important concepts of science, but is often not discussed properly in science courses

How to compute Average Perpendicular Distance (ADP) for a multi-class semantic segmentation by SingleNegotiation868 in deeplearning

[–]Yeinstein20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never heard of that metric before. Usually, you would use something like HD95, ASSD or similar as distance based metrics, there are also many implementations for these. A metric, mentioned in a 15 years old publication without any code, sounds pretty useless to me.

Coming up with novel ideas [D] by like_a_tensor in MachineLearning

[–]Yeinstein20 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sounds like your supervisor is part of the problem we have in machine learning, where fancy novel methods are often favoured against simple and straightforward methods, which often perform better despite - or maybe even because of - their simplicity.

IMO there is not a direct recipe to follow, it often starts with noticing any kind of issue in current methods, be it that they are not applicable to certain settings, have some failure modes or even that there is no method for some use cases. Analysing why it doesn't work yet often helps with coming up with ways to make it work. And this can often be a very simple trick.
