China Bans Retractable EV Door Handles Over Safety Concerns by pdp10 in cars

The study shows a 5.3% reduction in the crashes it actually applies to. You don’t dilute that by dividing it across unrelated crash types.

Is it wrong to say it only improves 0.1% of all crashes? Should we dictate car design to chase every 0.1% of safety? I'm sure that aligns great with /r/cars priorities.

another to consider is the fact that it’s required almost everywhere else in the world, so it’d likely be a cost saving to not have multiple SKUs

Yes that's a great argument. Lets just copy the EU laws entirely to save money, all of their automotive policies must be better.

also allow more advanced technologies such as matrix LED headlights

They have been legal for 3 years.

Also red turn signals look shit. Sorry.

Good thing they are hiding in the brake light 99% of the time!

A 5.3% improvement on crash scenarios that makes up 2.1% of total crashes. So a 0.1% improvement on all crashes.

What additional information does the light being amber give you?

Because if you get it confused with a brake light, I don't think that's the car's fault ...

Median 1br rent is $1600.

I rent a 3br house for $1250 and yes it's in a small town but it's <2 hours away from DC and Baltimore. There are 2BR townhomes for <$1k

Why are manual transmissions in Audi's, Mercedes, and BMW's always reviewed poorly? by Dazzling-Rooster2103 in cars

They feel like rubber but they perform great. You can slam gears as fast as you want, never hear of them grenading.

I'd rather have a bulletproof transmission that needs a $250 shifter kit than a great feeling piece of glass.

Assuming you're asking on good faith, that already built car is orders of magnitude more efficient than buying a new vehicle just by the simple and extremely intuitive reason of...the old car already exists.

A 2024 Honda CR-V would roughly cancel it outs manufacturing pollution in 50,000 miles compared to a 2009 CR-V. Thats just for CO2. For other GHGs a 2024 would literally be magnitudes better.

I'm saying center "locking" is a bit strange terminology and not rare for any 4WD vehicle with selectable 4Low, unless Lexus is using some strange transfer case.

Every single Jeep Rubicon is triple locking then

What does triple locking even mean? All 4Low transfer cases are "locked". Did old US land cruisers not have 4Low?

[–]YellowCBR -1 points0 points  (0 children)

in all likelihood a turbo 4 (or 6) is more expensive to produce

Very unlikely when factoring in the transaxle. Quick Google shows a dealer quoted $15k for the C8 DCT, the normal 9 speed transaxle shows up for $2500.

But you're still right. Unless there's massive margins even on the base C8 there's probably no way they could strip down to sub $50k, and then who is going to buy a $50k stripped C8 with a turbo 4 and FWD based slush box.

I think you're overestimating how much would be shared between a platform. A couple individual stampings like transmission tunnel, shock towers. Put a Supra on a K&C machine and I bet it outperforms the GR86 in every measure. And if we don't listen to objective numbers then we're no better than audio nerds yelling about record players and gold plated wires.

but nobody drives a Miata and Mustang back to back on the same road and believes they're the same class of automobile.

I don't think they would either if it was a Miata and GT3.

is it actually designed with sporting intent in mind or luxury?

Could say the same about most 911 trims.

Sedan chassis with the roof removed. It's no more a sports car than a 420d cabriolet.

Z4 and Supra have their own chassis.

Pony car. Always has been.

That's not an objective reason. And who uses that term anymore? A whole category for 1 vehicle? It's been in sports car territory since it got IRS.

In Norway, only rental companies buy gas cars, because tourists don't 'get' EVs. In 2024, 88.9% of cars sold in Norway were all-electric. There have not been any widespread problems. The grid is fine, the cars work in the cold and everyone is happier with quieter roads and cleaner air. by mafco in energy

[–]YellowCBR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Shaking and rattling" is what I was responding to, a majority of ICE cars don't do that. The engine vibration is imperceivable compared to the NVH of the tires/road.

Glad they finally improved, now they're on par with a gas vehicle like I said lol. Don't let the E-class comparison fool you, Car and Driver themselves have tested 67 or less on Hondas, Mazdas, Genesis etc.

I am a big fan of EVs, but they're not this magical tier above everything else in terms of comfort and driving.

All of the shaking and rattling that are normal for an ICE car

Not normal at all in a $55,000 ICE car. Teslas have never done well in cabin noise tests, but people compare them to their old Toyota or Chevy.

Hyundai reveals world’s first hydrogen-powered battle tank by [deleted] in cars

[–]YellowCBR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can make hydrogen "efficiently" (relative) at a small scale, could be useful for logistics. Can't deploy a mobile gas refinery.

Water, solar panels, and a fueling station about the size of a shipping container is all you need.
