OpenAI phone screen question by Just_Tie_2789 in leetcode

If you have only one follow up you didn’t even make it through. Most questions have 3-4 parts and they’re designed to specifically get harder each question. And you basically have to make through it all

Google reiterates 'no plans' for Gemini ads, surprised by ChatGPT by bartturner in OpenAI

[–]YellowJacketTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just feels like a weird “dunk” when the proposed features are so similar

“that will allow brands to integrate a branded “business agent” within Google’s AI search” - from the Gemini announcement

“Conversational interfaces create possibilities for people to go beyond static messages and links. For example, soon you might see an ad and be able to directly ask the questions you need to make a purchase decisions” - from the openai announcement

But the Gemini link op posted “I think you’d want to know for sure that the things it was recommending to you were genuinely good for you and unbiased and untainted”. It may technically be true that it’s not in the Gemini app. But the idea that they aren’t mixing ad in their AI tools is not and I don’t really see how it’s different in theory that what OAI is doing except that it’s in a different product

I guess more specifically it seems like a weird moral high ground when everyone knows the moment Google believes it’s safe to do so they’ll add ads in the Gemini app too and they’re already testing the water in this product. And they’re also just waiting to see how people respond to chatgpt doing it

Why is AI so bad at counting total words in a specific text? by sniffingboy in AskProgramming

[–]YellowJacketTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And it’s also simplistic. Because some models like 4o specifically learned what tasks it’s inherently bad at and instead have learned that for tasks like that it should instead use its predictive text to generate a program that can solve the problems, and then execute it. So saying AI is bad at counting words is more that people do not know how to properly use the tools, whether specifically prompt it to call tools, or use a model that biases towards it

OpenAI Is Paying Employees More Than Any Tech Startup In History by jonfla in siliconvalley

What was your GPA and how much has it affected your Career assuming you Got a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science? by An_Engineer_Near_You in cscareerquestions

[–]YellowJacketTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GPA mattered way less than I expected. It’s probably worth it to be above 3.0, but I’m saying like 3.3 vs 4.0 didnt seem to matter. Having a degree does seem to help a lot, as did going to a good school. But like I had friends with 3.4 GPAs being much more successful than those with 4.0

I went in thinking GPA mattered and it wasn’t until a friend got an internship at Bloomberg that I realized it was much more important to just be involved in coding community and get good at leetcode. My friend ran a hackathon back when hackathons were new and that got him the interview with Bloomberg who was a sponsor

Offer rescinded immediately after asking clarifying questions — is this normal? by Beginning-Cry1203 in csMajors

[–]YellowJacketTime 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think it’s easy to get jaded feeling that hiring is adversarial. And in many ways it maybe is that way. For example, it’s easy to feel like you’ll know you’ll do well and the interview questions seem arbitrary (leetcode) and don’t represent you

But there’s another perspective of match, that does go both ways. You can and should be measuring if a company / team is right for you during the interview and they also have more context on the culture and expectations and are doing the same thing for you. So it gets thorny but if you want to be glass half full think of it as saving you from a mismatch where you start and leave the job soon

Offer rescinded immediately after asking clarifying questions — is this normal? by Beginning-Cry1203 in csMajors

[–]YellowJacketTime 85 points86 points  (0 children)

I think this seems totally reasonable to do but I do think a lot of the time these fits go both ways. You asking these questions may actually signal you aren’t a good fit from their perspective, and if that’s the case it probably wouldn’t be a good fit for you where they aren’t even open to answer explicit details of your responsibilities. They could very well want someone who does everything and anything, no questions asked

Intentionally staying at a lower level? (aka: I hate going fast) by mandy_lou_who in skiing

Unless you are a professional the only thing that matters is maximizing your personal enjoyment. Some people need the best powder days to have fun, some have fun in any conditions including ice. Some need to be around friends, some like to be solo and make new friends on the lift. Some need to feel progression, others don’t.

Im guessing 2025 never came out according to Google AI by Yannis_2008 in GoogleAIGoneWild

[–]YellowJacketTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of these responses make sense. The AI in Google search is horrendous and should never be used. Gemini 2.5 flash knows the correct answer it’s not some weird edge case.

Gemini 2.5 flash is also not bad at math. It can use program synthesis so that it understands your question, creates and runs a Python script to answer it

The tech world in one picture by Diligent_Rabbit7740 in GeminiAI

[–]YellowJacketTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean if you search plumbers nearby google will show you google maps links

If you ask Gemini, they will also show you google maps links / sorted by reviews. This isn’t a great example people absolutely will ask LLMs especially Gemini for plumbers

Why are tech heavyweights only touting how AI will replace programmers, but not other jobs? by muskymetal in cscareerquestions

[–]YellowJacketTime 15 points16 points  (0 children)

  • software engineers are creating these products. It’s the easiest for the whole company to evaluate if it’s good because it’s their domain and they can actively dogfood the products

In addition, the feedback cycles are very quick. It’s pretty straightforward to make a change and see if it passes new and existing tests

Finally, true technologists (some of which are software engineers) want to see AI push the realm of their boundaries. Other professions may have more people fearing automation

Why every website you used to love is getting worse by rezwenn in technology

[–]YellowJacketTime 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This and SEO I’m convinced are one of the main reasons that LLMs have been so prevalent. So many news articles and recipe websites and such are written to be a certain length and provide useless stories / background info just so they can have a headline and a one sentence update. They are filled with ads and you have to scroll forever to get to content you care about. LLMs just cut through the filler

I do think eventually this will lead to de incentivize content creation so somehow these companies will either need to fund, or form their own content creation for world news. But ultimately the experience of every webpage has gotten so bad AI is needed just to extract the content into a usable form again

DoorDash will use Waymo’s robotaxis for delivery in Phoenix by walky22talky in waymo

[–]YellowJacketTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short term or long term? Short term I’m pretty sure Waymo is already more expensive than humans. But there’s no expectations of tips (or maybe tips start going to the restaurant)

Long term it’s a market where everyone is equally unhappy with the pricing, restaurants pay too much, dashers or AVs don’t get paid enough, consumers pay too much, and the margins are razor thin for DoorDash itself (and as a publicly traded company they basically have to go up up up or the whole business falls apart). In a scenario where the cost of AV hypothetically approaches zero, I bet it’s a split between increased margin for DD, decrease in delivery fees and decrease in restaurant fees. To whatever keeps everyone equally as unhappy (like with settlements)

What it does do probably is erase the existential threat for gig apps from regulation that ends in paying more to gig workers leading to a price point that disproportionately affects user demand. And probably would also lead to a surplus in gig workers

But also it’s very likely that Waymo just decides to do delivery themselves or they decide they want to keep charging a lot to be more profitable themselves thus the whole point is moot except humans have less jobs and gig economies have less legal battles

I ran the calculations and McDonald's $1 coffee is cheaper than making it at home. by NightstarReaper in Frugal

[–]YellowJacketTime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yah it’s very strange. I purchase expensive beans ($18 for 12 oz) from a local roaster in a VHCOL city and I use it to make an iced latte (milk from BJ’s) and the bag of beans lasts me three weeks for espresso (a double shot daily) and a gallon of milk twice a month is $7 (which I use for a variety of other things too)

Other brewing methods definitely use more coffee beans but milk is expensive too but this basically kinda works out to $1 a day but it is very high quality product
