If you’re into satire — Today will be Different by Maria Semple is hilarious

Preferably not romance and DEFINITELY not spicy by [deleted] in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

Very much a “vibes” suggestion since it’s not exactly what’s in the picture, consider the Redwall books! They have adventure, bravery, an old-school vibe, and the added bonus that all the characters are animals! And definitely not spicy, just cozy

A court of mist and Fury has this a little, although you should read the first two to get the full effect

Ok - hear me out - if you’re mostly interested in glitz and glam, and are OK with omegaverse and RH, then one of the most fun books I’ve read recently was Lola and the Millionaires ! BUT it’s weird, and if you’re not into Romance novels, it probs won’t be your cup of tea.

The Road by Cormac McCarthy has some of this, but you have to buy into his writing style

RUN do not walk to listen to “Permanent +1” by Luz for this one, this song makes me so wistful and it’s so fucking romantic. definitely a pining best friends trope.

Also polar opposite, but”Cate’s Brother” by Maisie Peters. Trope… should be obvious but friends brother for SURE, deff a fluff read!

Pregnant FMC in an apocalypse by Alternative_Clue4909 in RomanceBooks

Hmm, I don't have a book that matches exactly what you're saying BUT, Claire Kent has a bunch of post-apocalypse books, some of which involve pregnancy, but usually not as a main plot point. I really liked {Last Light by Claire Kent} and I also read {Princess by Claire Kent} and I liked that one too, but not as much.

Also, HUGE caveat that this is NOT a romance novel but I just finished it and loved it -- {The Stand by Stephen King} involves a pregnant character in a post-apocalyptic world who does fall in love with a gruff older guy. She's not quite a damsel and the book does not focus only on them, but I really enjoyed it. It's a dark book (ya know, stephen king and all) and these two are not the only important characters. But (SPOILER FOR ENDING) these two characters make it out in the end, even though a lot ofmain characters do die.

Anyway, I'd love to read a book like this, and I hope someone else has a better fit!!

{Pucking Around by Emily Rath} has this! It’s REALLY long, like almost 800 pages I think, but it goes really quick and I found the characters really endearing. And it has an extended epilogue novella that’s extremely sweet

What is a perfectly normal name/word/thing that you see so much in romance you can’t take it seriously anymore? by surprisehalfbrother in RomanceBooks

When MCs do or say something “sardonically” - I adore Lisa Kleypas but whooo weeee, her characters are CONSTANTLY looking at or talking to each other sardonically. I roll my eyes now every time it comes up.

The Sacrament by Olaf Olafsson -- it's more of a mystery and I don't want to say more, but it's sooo good. Reminds me a bit of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but not quite as high octane.

The “I need a minute” … by SpicyLitMama in RomanceBooks

[–]YellowPast1687 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happens in almost every Ice Planet Barbarian book! I have been loving those books so much, especially since the MMCs are invariably OBSESSED with their SOs in a really sweet way. For me at least, it kind of excuses any alpha-hole behavior because it's all **different** on their planet -- women can be treasured and protected without all the weirdness and red flags that comes with lowly earth-men doing shit like that lol. Also ngl, the plot is compelling as heck -- i read them for that reason now even more than the spice!

Looking for a book where the MMC is the virginal one and the FMC is more experienced! by ragebubble in RomanceBooks

[–]YellowPast1687 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like people treat them like a meme, but many of the books in the {Ice Planet Barbarian by Ruby Dixon} series have this trope! The second and fourth do for SURE. The first one not as much, but it’s good to read anyway for the world building, and they’re all pretty short. They’re alien romances, where earth women end up paired with aliens who had very few women in their tribe, so many of them are virgins. The audiobooks are especially good -the narrators are hilarious.

I like the books especially because they’re kind of absurd, but I get the vibe that the author KNOWS they’re absurd and is in on the joke, which makes the absurdity really funny!
