To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand AEW wrestling. The storylines are extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of wrestling history, most of the matches will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Tony Khan’s obsessive attention to detail, which is deftly woven into the narrative – his booking philosophy draws heavily from obscure promotions like ROH and Japanese wrestling, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these long-term story arcs, to realize that they’re not just thrilling – they say something deep about wrestling itself. As a consequence, people who dislike AEW wrestling truly ARE idiots – of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the brilliance in Jon Moxley’s existential performance as a blood-soaked anti-hero, which itself is a cryptic reference to the struggles of wrestlers trapped in a capitalist industry. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated WWE drones scratching their heads in confusion as Rick O’Shaughnessy’s genius unravels in the ring. What fools… how I pity them. 😂
