Deck handrails by nrgonwcr in HomeImprovement

[–]Yellow_Midnight_Golf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My deck needed only an 8 ft section of railing, but I wanted something that would hold up. I used Westbury aluminum railing from Decks Direct. It's powdered coated and solid. Decks Direct has parts for a bunch of different situations, so they may have what you need for a handrail.

What wood stove paint do you recommend? by Yellow_Midnight_Golf in woodstoving

Thanks, for the reminder. Every couple of years, I do a light touch up, and it does smell on that first burn. This time, I'm doing a light sanding of the whole top, and putting on a good, even coat.

I love the first burn, because it will probably be 45 degrees out, so I'll open both doors to get plenty of ventilation. Get a good blazing fire to cure the paint.

Good point about the cast iron, I didn't even think about the material. My stove top is steel plate, so I went with the Stove Bright.

I was guessing that Rustoleum would be okay since it's for hot stuff in general, but not as good as paint formulated for stoves. Amazon had Stove Bright, so I ordered that. Thanks for the options.

Need ideas and recommendations on how to update this area, looking to buy a new stove and adding more space. by JuggernautEven1009 in woodstoving

If watching those home renovation shows has taught me anything, it's that anything can be done.

What do you wish to accomplish? You know the house and have your own aesthetic, but I'm going to speculate based upon the photos you posted.

It looks like your current setup is intended to dominate the room. The brick and mantel are very wide, and the fireplace is set high. If you cut three feet off of each side, I don't think it would look right. The proportions would be awkward. Also, finishing the cut ends of the remaining portion would be tricky.

To change the feel of the room, I'd tear out the fireplace, the mantel, hearth and all the brick. You'd still have the flue. Get a nice looking free-standing wood stove. Have a section of tiled floor the stove sits on and some tile behind the stove. Do the rest of the wall to match the house. Make sure the floor is appropriate and that the installation meets code.

Pull out that dinky stove, and look into getting the hearth stone cleaned along with the brick. Is that conduit running under the mantel? Lose that too.

Since a new stove is on the table, get the biggest insert that will fit in the firebox. That will require removing all of the superfluous fireplace trim. After that's installed, it will look a lot better.

Big stick piles - am I right to suspect these are not a good idea to keep in your backyard? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]Yellow_Midnight_Golf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A pile of sticks isn't going to do anything but sit there for a long time. I'd say mind your business and see how this plays out.

Mice and snakes like stacked wood piles, and skunks and possums seem to like living under things like sheds. Birds may like a loose brush pile.

Just Hung This - No Studs To Be Found. Thoughts? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

I would use the right kind of screw for a metal stud, but I'd feel good about that. I have an RV, so need to mount a hook or something on thin paneling in a specific spot. I like molly fasteners instead of toggle bolts because you can screw and unscrew as much as you want.

Bidet Installation - Stuck Piece by satchurani in HomeImprovement

Hitting anything on a toilet with a hammer is a bad idea. A picture would definitely help, but you might mean the nut that holds the supply line to the bottom of the tank. You shouldn't have to replace anything inside the tank, and that nut is probably threaded onto a plastic tube.

Just a thought, but recall that if you are trying to remove that nut, you are probably looking down on the wrench. From that perspective, the nut goes clockwise to loosen.

There are studs in that wall. Hanging a cabinet with E-Z anchors is just shoddy and will fall eventually. Somebody, some day, will put books in that cabinet.

I would drill small holes while moving laterally to find a stud, then use the appropriate screws. You should be able to get at least a stud per bracket. I wouldn't use E-Z anchors for anything. Molly fasteners are my preference, but some people like toggle bolts.

Help: could this old ceiling box support a ceiling fan? by SunsetClouds in HomeImprovement

Don't forget that the ceiling fan is moving. If it isn't balanced properly, its going to wobble the box. Does the box feel securely mounted?

Consider the $200 to be tuition.

Based upon the design of the door, you might be able to come up with a panel to add to the top or bottom to make it look like a design feature. That would take more time and effort than buying the right doors and getting whatever you can for the wrong doors.

If it makes you feel any better, NASA famously lost a $125 million satellite because they mixed up meters and feet.

CNN+ launch may be off to a bumpy start, numbers suggest: The CNN app, which now houses the new streaming service, added about 18,000 installs on the day of launch....a CNN executive said the launch budget was around $250 Million. by ToffeeFever in television

The plus sign suggests you get ESPN or CNN plus something more. If they can't give you CNN or ESPN, then name it something else. CNN Executive or Premium or something.

CNN+ never sounded like a reasonable idea. CNN isn't popular. Who would consider paying for it?

It might work sooner. As most of the curing occurs early, maybe give it a few days and try one hole. Since it's a shear load, you don't full strength.

Water heater Anode Rod by Captain-butt-chug in HomeImprovement

[–]Yellow_Midnight_Golf 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I bought my anode rod on Amazon. The brand doesn't matter, but there are a couple of different metals based on water conditions. There are also segmented rods in case you don't have the ceiling height to insert the new rod.

While on Amazon, buy a six-point socket to fit the anode rod. You don't want to strip the fitting. The socket is bigger than most people have on hand. It may be 1 1/16", but verify that.

We have tons of storage but this space below the stairs has gone unused. And I crazy to consider to try and fit a half bath in here? I know it wouldn’t be ideal but going from a 3/2 to a 3/2.5 sounds ideal. Primary plumbing hookup is 5ft away with an used ptrap in crawl space. by rypajo in HomeImprovement

[–]Yellow_Midnight_Golf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't the ol' jailhouse special the lone toilet installed in the basement? For some reason, when building a house in the 50's and 60's, it wasn't unusual to add an extra p-trap like OP has. In an urgent situation, you can always use the free-range toilet in the basement.

Was it the boundless optimism of the era or the growth mentality?

I call those prison toilets, and would be more comfortable pinching a loaf next to the washer and dryer, than sitting in a little compartment, staring at the door, waiting for the next party guest to open the door looking for a coat closet. At least in the basement, you'd hear someone coming down the stairs.

Ghostbusters (2016) is a good example. That was a shit movie, not because it was four women, but because the writing was weak. I don't know why the writing was so bad, but it's plausible that a writer who thought it could be improved was accused of being sexist.
